to love drinking by myself?

Apparently drinking alone is evidence you have a problem and you must be all sad and miserable and stuff. I love the occasional solitary evening of getting wasted - I read crap online, listen to music on youtube, watch awful films and cry at them and generally have a lovely time alone with my wine - getting pissed alone is a little treat! So... do I have a terrible alcohol problem???

I don't think anyone here has suggested anyone is crying into their wine glass 'depressed or sad'. what made you come out with that?

there is a simple issue here about units. Consistently drinking too many units across a week or a single session is bad for you. It doesn't matter if you don't want to believe that, or underestimate how many units there are in a bottle of wine - you are still drinking too much.

If someone is very reluctant to look at how much they are drinking and becomes very defensive when the subject is raised - or asks if they are drinking too much in the hope of being reassured that they aren't - then they might well have a problem.

This thread started off as a lighthearted thread and turned into a public health warning about alcohol not something I want to get into at 10 am on a wednesday morning,

whosgotmyhairytoe · 17/07/2012 10:08

Totally agree fruitybread watching the alcohol defensiveness is quite amusing.

Usually followed by I'm not unhappy I'm not like Peter Barlow off Corrie so I'm fine.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/07/2012 10:09

Well stop reading then Mrsjay. Confused and have you been on the drink? It's Tuesday! Grin

whosgotmyhairytoe · 17/07/2012 10:09

It's Tuesday have you been on the pop already? Wink

KellyElly · 17/07/2012 10:11

fruitybread a bottle of wine over an entire evening is not even a glass an hour. I don't consider that binge drinking. In fact on the continent people frequently do this. Lots of factors come into play with how much alcohol one person can drink compared to another - weight, height, if you drink water with wine, if you are having a large meal etc. I have a friend who works in PR and drinks about five nights out of seven (a lot more than I do) and she gets drunk really quickly. Obviously drinking a lot of units in one go is not the best for your liver but we're not teenagers fgs and I never 'neck' a bottle of wine. Most nights I don't even drink but if I have a dinner party or friends over then yes I will drink a bottle of wine but over a period of hours, with food and water and no I don't feel blind drunk or hungover the next day.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/07/2012 10:11

whosgotmyhairytoe, that's twice we've cross posted on this thread. GET OUT OF MY BRAIN! Wink

calypso2008 · 17/07/2012 10:12

It's 11 o'clock here . I think I'll have a nice glass of wine Wink

whosgotmyhairytoe · 17/07/2012 10:12

Blush sorry haha!

Mrsjay · 17/07/2012 10:13

oopsie Wednesday I am wishing the week away probably looking forward to my Friday Wine

Hownoobrooncoo · 17/07/2012 10:14

Kellyelly. - I think on the continent for one person to drink a bottle of wine would be seen as quite a lot. One bottle of wine is a lot of alcohol, especially for women as we have a lower tolerance then men. Don't fool yourself.

whosgotmyhairytoe · 17/07/2012 10:15

Here everyone have a Brew and my very first Biscuit a boring persons treat of choice.

sparkle12mar08 · 17/07/2012 10:15

I think that people who drink with the main or sole aim of getting 'wasted' probably do have a problem, yes. Getting drunk should in a way be incidental to drinking alcohol - it should be just another liquid, just another flavour, amongst the many drinks we can choose from. I quite happily mix having a glass of wine or a gin & tonic with having a glass of coke or apple juice or other mixer. I can't see the point of getting so pissed that a hangover ensues the next day.

Tressy · 17/07/2012 10:16

I don't think a bottle of wine is excessive. I stick to 13% and under and it's red that I prefer nowadays. If I drink it slowly, it relaxes me. If I opened a second bottle then I would feel pissed so don't do it.

Now a bottle of vodka and I would be worried

I also don't adhere to everything that I am told I can and cannot do by the authorities.

whosgotmyhairytoe · 17/07/2012 10:16

Oh well if they do it on the continent then it must be ok Hmm what kind of logic is that?

KellyElly · 17/07/2012 10:16

sorry fruitybread I was replying to ErnesttheBavarian not you.

calypso2008 · 17/07/2012 10:17

Here in Spain, people have wine at 9am with their breakfast - I kid you not. It is called the 'almurzo' They also have a bottle of wine at lunch between two people. Not sure about evenings as I am at home, on my own, with my wine.

Hownoobrooncoo · 17/07/2012 10:18

I've lived and spent time in several countries - none of them drank the way we do in the UK.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/07/2012 10:18

Sitting alone in front of a screen with a bottle of wine is a lot different to sitting around a table with food and friends KellyElly.
I'm not saying don't do it OP that would be Pot calling the kettle the most midnight shade of black just remember not to normalise it, try not to rely on it and certainly don't hide it, if you find yourself lying about alcohol for any reason then you most certainly have a problem.

HipHopOpotomus · 17/07/2012 10:19

Oh I do like to do this too sallys - house to myself, wine, recline on sofa and watch back to back ANTW, Project Runway, soppy film or some such nonsense.
I drink alcohol once a week or fortnight max these days. I don't see the fact that I am alone an issue!

nymeria · 17/07/2012 10:20

I don't see any problem with drinking alone, though regularly 'getting wasted' is probably not very good for you, regardless of whether you do it in company or alone.

I agree that drinking a whole bottle of wine yourself seems excessive, I really can't imagine doing that, and it doesn't sound like a healthy habit.

Hownoobrooncoo · 17/07/2012 10:21

What is ANTW? Tell me now!

fruitybread · 17/07/2012 10:26

It's not about how you feel after one bottle of wine or two. It's not about what other people do (everyone in my family used to smoke. That meant it was 'normal' but didn't mean it was okay. Surely, surely people here are bright enough to grasp that?)

It's about HOW MUCH YOU DRINK.

The combination of home drinking, increased strength of alcoholic drinks and large size of 'home measures' means it is very easy for people to drink too much without realising.

Mrsjay · 17/07/2012 10:33

what is ANTW anybody Confused

I thought Americas next top 'something'
