I cannot decide.

If we go abroad I do not want other people around. I do not like other peoples children. I do not want english bars or all invlusive.

So if abroad I will need a villa and ££££.

or

Uk. Accept it is going to be a bit chilly and rainy. And half the cost of somewhere warm but hideous.

What the actual do we do.

Guernsey is lovely and often gets good weather, and you get to go on a ferry which is half the fun and if your DCs are about 8 or above, you can cycle round the whole island in bite sized chinks over a week

Two of us in Newquay and two of us in Benidorm (me and DS, yep I'm a freaky single parent who holidays alone with my kid!). I'm also including the train fare in the cost of Newquay as well (which wasn't too extortionate as we have a family railcard and booked in advance). We stayed in a two birth caravan which was £595 for a week, plus £70 train fare. Benidorm (apartment, non inclusive) is £571 including flights. I know Benidorm is not everyone's cup of tea but I just wanted to point out that this country isn't necessarily cheaper!

I like my peace and quiet also, but a villa holiday does not need to cost that much. We have had several villa holidays including flights for under £1000 for the 5 of us.

If you are not to fussed where you go its easier to find something
We always search for cheap flights somewhere with ryanair. Search all airports that you could reallistically travel from and see which destinations they go to. Do one airport/destination at a time. you may have to play around with the dates. But Ryanairs prices can go up and down. you can find a price, search the same dates and airport the next day and it can be cheaper.

If you find something then go in search of a villa we once managed to get a cancellation for a 4 bed villa in spain for £450 for the week. (+£250 for flights)

Try holiday lettings and holiday rentals, also search ebay. We have used all 3 in the past. If you cant get a match with the flights and villa for the date you want then change location.

There are cheaper options out there you just have to spend a little time to find them. DH always leaves this to me as i have the patience to search!!

Have you considered France? Welcome holidays do a 'ferry inclusive' option and very reasonable. DH and I use them a lot as like somewhere with an enclosed garden and peace when on holiday!

We have just booked Venice

1 week stay ( £400 for x2 adults and x2 under 3s) and that's a hotel suite plus breakfast - also after booking got upgraded to sister hotel for free :)

Flights £85 each return so in our case 85x3

If the OP can't be doing with anyone else sharing the same air, then, with respect forevergreek Venice is about the last destination I'd recommend. Especially in the peak season!

forevergreek · 16/07/2012 18:44

Ah yes it' was more of a ' you can prob go somewhere in Europe for a reasonable amount if you look option'

You save so much looking most of the time and organising yourself rather than through a company. This does take time though but obv companies take commission so more

A UK summer holiday?

Why not drive to France? Return ferry crossing £100. Throw in some road tolls and petrol and you can get to the South of France for £600. Throw in a villa rental somewhere slightly obscure for a week for £900. Total cost £1500. Bargain. No suffering from Other People's Children and sun thrown in as well.
