I don't really enjoy correcting spelling errors but I've seen this one so much on MN recently that I typed out a text to my DH this morning and wrote "rediculous" instead of "ridiculous". It's worked it's way into my written vernacular.

RIDICULOUS, people, RIDICULOUS.

Thangeweverymuch love you mwahmwah xxx

You're being rediculous OP Grin

Funny thread.

AtLeastThatsWhatYouSaid · 12/07/2012 19:09

I'm not great with spelling tbh

But....

Brought/bought

Argh FFS even I know the difference!

arfur · 12/07/2012 19:23

Re the 'text speak' english lesson - ahem, she dint lern nuffink, dur she's a 12 year old gel innit. Or to put it another way as a 12 year old girl she already knows EVERYTHING and on mastermind her specialist subject would probably be texting Hmm I assume the teachers were having a let's be down wid da kids day or they cba. Apparently her school is an outstanding academy ....... we aint even in da hood or nuffink

TeacakeTilly · 12/07/2012 20:08

Piccallilli I HATE that!! I've noticed it is used largely by sales people (disclaimer: have been salesperson myself and have nothing against them at all - this is just an observation!). I cannot stand it when somebody is saying something like 'obviously it is important to yourselves...' There's always a stress on the 'to' as well....

Do I need to get out more?

KenHomsDadsWoksDead · 12/07/2012 20:31

..."It's worked it's way into my written vernacular."

Oopsie! Grin

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 12/07/2012 20:38

Specific - explicit/definite
Pacific - a huge expanse of water

How can they be confused????

MerrilyWatkins · 12/07/2012 20:41

Can I just point out that a person who is unfaithful is a CHEAT not a cheater.

yellowraincoat · 12/07/2012 20:43

I actually don't get what's wrong with "horrid", is it considered a stupid word? I use it. I LIKE it!

I think cheater is fine, cheat, cheater, who cares.

Lose vs loose though, fuck, that makes me want to punch holes in a wall.

yellowraincoat · 12/07/2012 20:44

Oh yes and "please email myself" GAH it does NOT make you sound posh, it makes you sound a total twat.

TerracottaPie · 12/07/2012 21:01

Perscription is one of my dislikes. I don't see it too much on here but at work it is unhappily common. From people who should really really know how it is spelt.

Is anyone else triple checking their posts before they hit the button? Grin

waterlego6064 · 12/07/2012 21:14

Absolutely terra, I keep getting the fear every time I post.

I hate 'cheater'. Yuck.

I worked with someone who used to do the pacific/specific thing. And she also used to say 'unindated'. WTF?

On a TV programme I was watching last night, the voiceover said something along the lines of: 'at 4pm in the afternoon'. Confused

olimpia · 12/07/2012 21:17

Principal = the head of something
Principle = a conviction/moral belief
Thank you!

Drywhiteplease · 12/07/2012 21:18

mycat pacific....yes! How?why?

God this thread is confirming my language OCD.

Don't start me on punctuation!

I really hate "got".

olimpia · 12/07/2012 21:22

An the word "amazing".
Totally not descriptive and widely abused by people who have nothing interesting to say!

GsyPotatoPieEyed · 12/07/2012 21:25

Has anyone mentioned "these ones" yet?

waterlego6064 · 12/07/2012 21:27

Agree olimpia. It is so often misused, in the same way that 'awesome' is.

Aside from being an ocean, pacific (without the capital) means peaceful or appeasing, I think.

EugenesAxe · 12/07/2012 21:29

Affect - used when an action has an impact on something or someone
Effect - used when something comes out of an action

"How did the thunderstorms affect you?"
"One crappy effect was that my house flooded."

But what's the issue with horrid, exactly? That's passed me by. Gotten on the other hand.... .

EugenesAxe · 12/07/2012 21:30

Hmmm... action, or thing, it seems.

CharltonHairstyle · 12/07/2012 21:32

My colleague used to say ridiclious Grin

perfectstorm · 12/07/2012 21:37

Further to discrete and discreet: complement and compliment. THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

Shodan · 12/07/2012 21:38

"Can I add rein in. Not reign in. Unless you are the Queen."

Exactly so, Katisha. Likewise, those restraints that you put on recalcitrant toddlers are reins, not reigns.

Chandon · 12/07/2012 21:39

All those people who want to send their kids to independant schools, as it will help their spellings, amongts other things......aaaaargh

IndependEnt, not dAnt

Thenks

perfectstorm · 12/07/2012 21:40

Something that always makes me smile, though: when someone primly corrects someone else's "grammer". Happens surprisingly often.

perfectstorm · 12/07/2012 21:42

Oh, and "free rein", not "free reign". Horse, not hereditary dictator (though in some instances, perhaps the confusion is understandable).

Drywhiteplease · 12/07/2012 21:46

"I got given...." eeeek
