to think that you can't ovulate and then have no period?

OK, I am usually not robust enough for AIBU and don't venture over here, but I think this will get more traffic so here goes!

Have pcos, ovulated for the first time in years this month (confirmed by blood test). My period should have come any time between today and five days ago.

Have POAS every day in the last five days and am still testing BFN.

You have to have a period if you've ovulated and are not pregnant, right?

Is it possible that I am pregnant, even though I used those First Response things?

I had already written off this cycle, but now have renewed hope!!

Hmmmm. I honestly thought that ovulation = inevitable period. I'm hoping like anything that your FR tests are wrong. It's been known. You might be having a long cycle in which case you're not quite due and it's slightly too early to test?

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:26

you should bleed 14 days after ovulation if not pregnant...... are you testing with concentrated pee (don't pee for at least 4 hours!).

First response no better than the cheap pee sticks you buy off the internet - no need to waste money!

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:26

Oooh, do you really think so Grin

Does period have to be 14 days after ov or is that just approx? Am not v good at science..

I think I'll faint if it suddenly turns positive!

OP posts:
Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:27

Cross posted there, yes tested with first morning pee..

I ran out of internet cheapies the last zillion cycles, so have had to fork out this month as I didn't order on time..I guess I could order them now though!

OP posts:
SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:37

Order! Smile The science is, basically, yes date of ovulation determines when the period will come, so for example, if you ovulate on day 20 of cycle (20 days after the previous period started), then the period would be due 14 days later on day 34 of that cycle. Give or take a day or two.

There is variability over when the egg would get fertilised and how long it could take to implant (3 to 5or 6 days), and this will affect how early you might get a positive test.... don't give up quite yet Smile. fingers crossed!

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:40

Mmm, this really fries my poor brain.

So if I did the progesterone blood test on day 21 and it came back positive (ie I'd ovulated), I guess I would have ovulated any time between day 12 and day 16 let's say?

Today is day 30...

OP posts:
SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:40

You are saying you are now 20 days past the ovulation test? (at which point you may not have ovulated but would have within a day or two of getting that high reading?). Just checking!

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:42

I had a blood test done to confirm ov, I've given up on those mind-boggling ov sticks!

OP posts:
Davinaaddict · 11/07/2012 22:44

My friend didn't test positive until she was about 8 weeks pregnant both times, so yes you could be pregnant Smile

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:46

oh, wow :)
How did she eventually find out? Did she just keep testing?

OP posts:
RancerDoo · 11/07/2012 22:46

Presumably a day 21 blood test confirmed ov? It doesnt confirm when you ovulated though... Might it have been shortly before the test?

Birdsgottafly · 11/07/2012 22:49

You can ovulate but not have a period, if you have PCOS or are in perimenopause, according to the consultant at our Women's hospital.

You should discuss this with them, it is good news that you are ovulating, because, likewise, you could be pregnant.

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:50

x post! ok, confused now! Do you mean, ovulation test on day 21 said you WOULD ovulate soon? It's the rising level before ovulation it detects (so you'd ovulate on day 20,21,22)? At day 30, you might just get a weak positive and the period would in a couple of days...

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:50

Is that possible to be just before the test, I'm not sure when the hormones would rise to levels high enough to be detected as luteal phase?

Am hoping that there is an MNer out there who is much smarter than I am with these things!

I know for sure that I did ov, i even saw the collapsed follicle on the ultrasound scan that they did at the fertility clinic :)

OP posts:
Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:52

No, the progesterone test on day 21 tells you if you've already ovulated, the poas ov sticks tell you if you are about to ov :)

Birds I am pcos, so perhaps that's why? although I ov I just won't get a period? I hardly get periods anyway but I assumed that's because I wasn't oving! I never had a positive progesterone test before in my life..

OP posts:
SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:53

*would start. (if not preg of course).

MMmmmm blood test, not quite sure how those work... used to ov sticks myself.

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:55

The bloods are only to confirm ov, they usually don't bother to do them at the dr unless you have ridiculously rare periods and have been ttc for years (like me)

I got all excited about the ov sticks til I realised they didn't work for pcos and give random positives even if you're not oving :(

OP posts:
Sallykitten · 11/07/2012 22:55

I have PCOS too. Because our hormones are all cocked up it doesn't necessarily follow that ovulation = bleed as the hormones you need to finish off the cycle and make you bleed may not happen or will happen later than you expected.

Go ask for a blood test at your GPs to confirm.

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 22:57

thanks Sally. I definitely got the rise in progesterone, can it sometimes not fall again with pcos do you know? Sorry if you don't want to say but do you have any DCs and how long did it take to find out you were pg?

I think I'll go for a blood test if I don't my period by next week!

OP posts:
SCOTCHandWRY · 11/07/2012 22:58

I think you only get no period after ovulating if the folical doesn't rupture (more common in peri menopause)...... exiting to have actually SEEN you had ovulated!

SummerRain · 11/07/2012 23:00

I don't have pcos nut was still testing neg at almost 10 weeks with dd. My hcg at that point was only 18! I had to have an internal scan to confirm pregnancy.

Maghribia · 11/07/2012 23:01

I know, how cool was that! :)

Thanks for that Summer, am feeling hopeful again!

Davinaaddict · 12/07/2012 01:56

Yes she did keep testing & eventually it was a positive Smile Both times the baby wasn't planned exactly, but she knew it was a possibility. Second time round, she was more sure she was pregnant, having been through it the first time. I think some people just have different reactions/pregnancies etc. Good luck! Smile

fridakahlo · 12/07/2012 02:06

I'd just like to say that first response are the most sensitive tests on the market and can detect trace amounts of hcg, hence being able to tell you whether you are pregnant before the due date of your period.
So if you are trying for an early test, you are better off using first response.

VegansTasteBetter · 12/07/2012 02:33

I think with pcos you can ovulate and not have a period because the egg turns in to a cyst doesn't it? I could be talkin out of my ass but also have pcos and think that's correct..
