Why oh why don't these iPhone users actually check their spelling before posting?

'flippin' iPhone'? No too flippin' lazy to check!

I have dh old iPhone because my phone broke and he asked if he could get a galaxy s3.

So don't judge people who have iPhones.

Plus they are so nice to use Wink

trixymalixy · 08/07/2012 09:57

Agree kayano, they are so intuitive. I have a blackberry for work and I hate it, I've been in a course and everything, but it is nowhere near as easy to use as the iPhone.

Bestb411pm · 08/07/2012 13:52

But how would you know I had an iPad Sad

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 08/07/2012 14:55

Yabu some of these phones have a mind of their own and even when u go back to correct it the damn thing still changes the word. Plus sometimes the touch screen gets slightly out of synch and u can touch one letter but it registers the letter next to it. Most the time we r all trying to type quick before our kid needs us and it's all a rush. It is not a sign of anyone bring lazy or stupid it's just something that happens to everyone. Especially those of us with fat fingers Blush

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 15:05

OH ok this is the subject of the day spelling and commas fab Grin

CotedePablo · 08/07/2012 15:26

Mrsjay I think it's a very interesting thread. And I'm very pleased to be told, for the first time ever, and by quite a few people, that I am being unreasonable. I have also been told to 'get a life' - first time for that too. Just need 'Leave the bastard!' to round things off nicely for me.

SoleSource · 08/07/2012 15:27

OOh sorry fluppin compotas

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 15:39

people are posting from their mobile phones it really isnt an issue there is auto correct and predictive text and sometimes a post will be a bit Confused but seriously this is an internet forum and people will post silly comments about Iphones why should they have to go back and correct it,

CotedePablo · 08/07/2012 17:38

Mrsjay they don't have to go back and correct it if they don't want to. I don't really care that much. I just think it makes them look a bit stupid - they've put out wads of cash on an item that doesn't really work properly, which I think is a bit daft. Each to their own though. I have a phone that does what I want it to, and I have a laptop to use if I want to post something here. I do consider, though, that those who feel they have to post on Mumsnet, or any other forum, when they are out and about and using their iPhones, are the ones who need to get a life.

By the way, I am offended at you saying my initial comment is silly. It wasn't silly, it was merely a comment.

Fireandashes · 08/07/2012 17:49

I don't have any choice whether I have an iPhone or not - it's standard issue at my company.

I do try to proof-read but occasionally it changes things like "of" to "if" or "so" to "do" and I'm not looking out for them as I know I typed the correct word. I don't want to turn off auto-correct because it gets it right far more often than it gets it wrong, IME.

There have been some unintentionally comic corrects too - it changed "meltdown" to "nightgown" once, so now meltdowns are known as "nightgowns" in our family.

SoupDragon · 08/07/2012 17:55

"they've put out wads of cash on an item that doesn't really work properly, which I think is a bit daft"

Except it does work properly.

I think there are lots of other things that make a person look more stupid.

Foshizzle · 08/07/2012 17:59

YABU. You're writing a post on an internet forum, not submitting a frigging essay.

RustyBear · 08/07/2012 18:21

"With the mumsnet app you cant scroll back to check what you've written"

Yes you can - just hold your finger in the box until the magnifying glass appears and the drag it up to the top. A scroll bar appears on the right hand side and you can scroll up. It's a little slow, but perfectly easy to do. The magnifying glass also makes it easy to get back to a particular point in the middle of a word so you can alter it.

Also, I have auto-correct turned off on my iPhone, but if you misspell a word ( as opposed to using a wrong word) when using the app, you do get a red line under it. Touch and select it and you get a menu with 'Suggest' as one of the options, which gives you some suggestions for the correct spelling.

Also the app makes it so much easier to use emoticons GrinGrinGrinGrin

RustyBear · 08/07/2012 18:25

Of course, the fact that you can scroll back and check makes that missing apostrophe in 'can't' in that post entirely my own fault....

CotedePablo · 08/07/2012 18:45

Of course nobody's writing a 'frigging essay', Foshizzle, and ordinary typos are usually no problem to figure out what they mean.

However, if Fireandashes posted a message saying 'My DD is having a nightgown', we'd be left wondering what on earth she was on about.

Anyway, I'm bowing out now, as it looks like me being reasonable or unreasonable is fairly equally split, and I'm happy with that. I'm ignoring those who have told me to 'get a life'. I have one thanks, and it's perfectly nice. Also ignoring those who make comments on my own spelling, grammar, etc. Any mistakes are of my own making, not those that some handheld piece of rubbish makes.

OP posts:
Foshizzle · 08/07/2012 19:07

Sorry Cote, my response was more abrupt than I meant it to sound (and I'm writing on a laptop!)

It's just that the tendency to jump in and correct posters' spelling and grammar annoys me. It's petty and spiteful. I know that this isn't in precisely the same vein, but I don't see why people can't participate however they want, and if they make errors that render their post completely unreadable then just address it in a way that's appropriate to the nature of their post. Not everyone is in a position to contribute to MN having composed themselves quietly at their PC with a cup of tea.

CatholicDad · 08/07/2012 21:18

"Catholic dad, why or why not i chose to have a particular type of phone is none of your business. I have it because i find it relatively easy to use and in my profession i can benefit from some of the apps available."

If it's none of my business why are you telling me? Smile

"I found your post quite rude." Sorry, but it wasn't aimed at you personally!

SecretPlace · 08/07/2012 21:27

YABU.

I type that quickly I've clicked 'send' before I've noticed the mistake. It's doing you no harm and it would seem you're not perfect either :)

CotedePablo · 08/07/2012 21:42

No problem Foshizzle. :) As you say, I'm not commenting on anyone's spelling or grammar - I'm not perfect myself, as SecretPlace has noted. I'm sure she isn't either. (Incidentally SP I type around 100 wpm, mostly pretty accurately).

I suppose what I was wondering about was why the iPhone changes things so often and people find it difficult not to check. I now know why. The iPhone is so efficient, it is able to change your post after you have actually sent it. Kind of like going back in time I suppose.

More to ponder....
