Why oh why don't these iPhone users actually check their spelling before posting?

'flippin' iPhone'? No too flippin' lazy to check!

I think you are raining.

NoComet · 08/07/2012 00:17

What I want is a proper spell checker, with wobbly red lines. Then I would have to go back and remove them.

Sadly, if I turn autocorrect off my spelling is so diabolical as to resemble a Y4 child's.
DD2 has probably been correcting my spelling since she was in Y3Blush

fedup2012 · 08/07/2012 00:23

I think OD is angelic and enveloped of people with podiums.

I can picture the scene at Apple's planning meeting:
"Hey! Let's have a real laugh with these new i-Devices!!"

CouthyMow · 08/07/2012 00:35

Childcare. My Iphone very secondhand but still comes with bastard Autocorrect ALWAYS corrects it to 'child are' for some only-known to Steve Jobs (yes I know he's dead, but still...) reason.

I thank you, Euphemia, for telling me how to turn off this bastardisation of predictive text that makes me want to throw my phone through the nearest window or under the nearest bus...

CatholicDad · 08/07/2012 00:46

No, YANBU because most if not all people who have an iPhone only have one because they think they should and because they are desperate not to seem inferior to the rest of their social 'circle'. That they do not have an iPhone for its technological virtues is evident from their admissions that they have only the barest idea how to use it Angry

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 08/07/2012 00:52

I got mine for work. I was very cynical but it's bloody handy, it really is. But like my netbook the keyboard and the autocorrect means you can drop some right clangers.

Pan did a thread last year saying just let it go, don't apologise or explain. Most of us were "hell no, people will think I'm illiterate". However I am now starting to think he was right.

Tee2072 · 08/07/2012 03:03

I almost never go back and say 'oops meant whatever'.

If you can't figure out what I meant, and you usually can by context, that's not my problem.

Also, I proofread.

And I post and move on, post and move on.*

*Name that TV show...

my2centsis · 08/07/2012 03:40

Yabu go and find something actually important to get your knickers in a twist about

pigletmania · 08/07/2012 06:15

Yabvvvvvu it looks fine before sending, but when you hit the send button it adjusts things at the last min so it's too late

rockinastocking · 08/07/2012 06:37

Blimey Catholic Dad, strong feelings there Hmm

Thank you to whoever it was upthread who suggested turning the bloody thing off. No longer will I have the ominous intials 'HIV' suggested, every time I type the word 'give'. Always a ray of sunshine, that.

rainydaysarebad · 08/07/2012 06:54

Does it matter? Unless I'm submitting an essay on mumsnet, the one little spelling mistake or misplaced comma doesn't matter to me. Also, I type with my thumbs and theyre a bit sausagy so I press thr capital button or often press R instead of E in the. It's shit, but that's life. You need to get one.

Tanith · 08/07/2012 08:58

It's not just a phone, Catholicdad. It's now indispensable for my working day.

Kayano · 08/07/2012 09:00

I don't check because I can actually spell. iPhone's are terrible for changing things!

See Damn you autocorrect on google. Sometimes it's completely random. It changed my friend's name to Asian the other day! That was awkward!

It even changes proper words and replaces them with sometimes.

To be honest when I am on the phone I am usually just checking while getting on with my life and life is too short to be checking and double checking for the pedants.

It's not like mumsnet is akin to a job application Hmm

Hth

McHappyPants2012 · 08/07/2012 09:10

i dont know why but if i type ill into the iphone it always corrects itself, but the thing has learnt yanbu and dont correct it any more :)

rainydaysarebad · 08/07/2012 09:20

Yeah mine has learnt yanbu and DS, but not dd or dh. Mumsnet ...yep it's learnt that too.

I like talking to Siri when I'm bored. I ask him why the chicken crossed the road and he replies: "I am not perspicacious about the peregrinations of poultry." love Siri :)

SoupDragon · 08/07/2012 09:20

I agree that, if you are going to whine about other people being to lazy to check their post, you probably should check your own. Anything else is idiocy.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 08/07/2012 09:22

Do you have one? Mine autocorrects, and with the crappy mumsnet talk app you can't scroll back to check what you have written.

Perhaps if so many people use that excuse, it means that it genuinely is fiddly, and we are not all just a bunch of thick twats.

bronze · 08/07/2012 09:28

I find that if you write a long sentence can't go back to see the beginning of the sentence because the box is too small.

I use my iPhone has an iPod and also all as a calendar and for doing geocaching. I also use the microphone function so that I can be doing jobs and posting on mumsnet at the same time Grin

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 08/07/2012 09:31

Catholic dad, why or why not i chose to have a particular type of phone is none of your business. I have it because i find it relatively easy to use and in my profession i can benefit from some of the apps available.

My dp tells me there are makes and models of smart phones with higher spec out there, but frankly i do not have time to sit down for hours on end and work out its intricacies or geek out over it for hours on end being a busy working mum and all. I found your post quite rude.

trixymalixy · 08/07/2012 09:35

My iPhone keeps auto correcting my name to Cocky. I don't think I've ever typed cocky on my phone, but have typed my name a million times. My name is often the last thing I type before I hit send and sometimes there's a slight delay before the auto correct box appears, so I've hit send just as it appears. Baffling and very embarrassing!!!!

Willabywallaby · 08/07/2012 09:37

YABU

Bunbaker · 08/07/2012 09:40

I hate predictive text and always switch it off on any phone that I use. It drives me round the bend.

trixymalixy · 08/07/2012 09:44

I tried switching it off, but it made things worse. Having it on is the lesser of two evils for me. I really wish they would change it.
