I think this rain is God's way of telling me to stay in and watch a good film and pamper myself today? Hmm

I love being at home, inside, when it's pouring with rain and - crucially - nice and cold.

I'm not that keen on this new variety of claggy tepid rain, and definitely do not like having to deal with the aftermath of three miles of mud on two low slung dogs.

smellyolddog · 07/07/2012 15:56

I'm so sick of the rain I actually googled a Rain spell this morning... to laughs and chuckles from DH who's off to italy for work..

the rain spell is this -

"Gods of power, Gods of might,
I bid you now, stop this plight,
Stop the rain, we need no more,
Let it fall, nevermore."

I not desperate to get some sunshine honestly!!

PoppyWearer · 07/07/2012 16:25

The garden looks lovely after all the rain.

However, I would like to be able to go out into the garden, rather than just look at it longingly from the windows.

Normally we LIVE in our garden in the summer. Which is why we spend a small fortune on it and paid extra for a house with a big garden. Sad

bitofcheese · 07/07/2012 16:28

i love the rain although my business doesn't, i depend on dry weather. i think i may soon have to consider getting into something different.........

SoleSource · 07/07/2012 18:21

I wonder if helen is from justchat..

Lonelylou · 07/07/2012 19:33

I've had to take two dogs out for a walk and they've come back wet and stinky. I wish someone would invent a cheap tumble drier for dogs...BUT I then did a face scrubb, applied a facepack, settled down to a lovely milky coffee, a bar of chocolate and a run around the telly channels...heaven!

By the end of this I should look so relaxed and unstressed all my frown lines will be gone and I will look beautiful. Wink

Sorry for Beatofdrum but can you hear that?......It's the rain Smile

helen- it's so annoying when people move abroad and then gloat about the weather. My Mum does this all the time and it really annoys me. aaargh! Smile

WerthersUnOriginal · 07/07/2012 20:03

I'm all for being inside and cosy if required at the appropriate time of year but blimmin heck it's July Hmm. In a minute it'll be winter again and probably still raining and well it's all so depressingSad.

BerryCheesecake · 07/07/2012 20:04

YANBU, I love the rain , my favourite weather :)

TodaysAGoodDay · 07/07/2012 20:08

YANBU, the rain is fab!

helenthemadex · 08/07/2012 11:54

no idea what justchat is sole, sorry YOS it is annoying Blush, part of the reason for moving was the weather although I dont mind the rain its so difficult in the summer when you just can't plan anything where you need or want the weather to be good

helenthemadex · 08/07/2012 11:55

and although far better than the uk the locals are all complaining about how bad the weather is here

YouOldSlag · 08/07/2012 12:13

I never realised quite how much a lack of sun can affect mood. I've heard of SAD etc but the lack of sun has really brought my mood down. I don't mind a rainy winter after a good blast of sunshine, but to go from from winter to winter with no respite is so depressing.

It has a knock on effect too:

-can't take kids to park so we all get bored stuck in or have to pay through the nose to go to indoor events
-can't invite people round for barbecues
-haven't been to a beach at all this year

  • eating a picnic in the car with the windscreen wipers on is NOT the same.
  • our annual carnival was cancelled
-sports day was cancelled

I mean it's not the end of the world but with a poor economy AND constant rain, it's not a happy summer, is it?

(oh and yes, I've done rainy day activities with the kids, and we've fed the ducks in the rain etc, but the novelty has seriously worn off now)

Lonelylou · 08/07/2012 12:35

Now come on YouOldSlag this started as a positive thread...lets keep it positive. How about thinking of three positives for every negative you've just said Hmm

Your first one may be being able to sit in and spend more time on mumsnet? Grin

I have Lou, but it's been four months of rain. I am usually Polllyanna but even my optimism has dimmed. Sad

Bestb411pm · 08/07/2012 12:40

Have you tried taking vitamin d supplements? I really noticed a difference in my mood when I started taking them this winter. Also means your body can absorb calcium properly so try and avoid the ones with added calcium if you already eat a lot in your diet.

YouOldSlag · 08/07/2012 12:43

Thank you Best, I'll look into that!

Angelico · 08/07/2012 12:48

YouOld I totally get you. I jumped out of bed this morning (well, hobbled but I'm pregnant) and went straight to the blinds. Actually felt my face droop with disappointment at yet another day of rain.

Felt quite weepy yesterday which is very unlike me and probably due in part to hormones and a shiftless bastard workman who let us down but I am desperate for some sun. Not going on holiday this year and it is really depressing me.

Best do you know what the recommended dose is of the Vit D? I know it's prob different when pregnant but might need them this winter to make up for no sunshine holiday (one or two weeks abroad usually keeps me going through the other 50 weeks of Irish weather...)

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 08/07/2012 12:49

I don't mind it either, tbh. It rained SO hard here overnight that it sounded like a rushing river. It was quite thrilling.

I also like working in my cosy little home office, with the rain and the dark sky outside and my fairy lights on, wistful music and a good cup of coffee.

Lonelylou · 08/07/2012 12:53

To all saying they're feeling down...please try to look for the silver lining. I was feeling a bit low and decided to look on the bright side and post the thread. If you think positive you'll feel positive surely!

But I'm interested in which foods carry vitamin D Hmm

OP posts:
Bestb411pm · 08/07/2012 12:54

No idea what the dose is when you're pregnant, but i would be surprised if it wasn't included in those pregnancy multivitamins you get.

I think D is one of those ones you can't really have too much of (which would make sense seeing as all those people living in sunnier climes must be absorbing loads of the stuff!) and have seen a couple of tabloid articles highlighting childhood rickets rising due to lack of it. But I do know that for the sake of heart disease etc you should avoid the ones with calcium added as very few people in this country don't have enough in their diets due to all the dairy we eat.

Check with your G.P though.

Bestb411pm · 08/07/2012 12:56

Lonelylou, I think that's part of the problem, it's very hard to get vitamin d through diet alone, the sun plays a big part. A lot of cereals have it added and some oily fish and eggs also have small amounts, not as good as a bit of sunshine though.

YouOldSlag · 08/07/2012 13:15

If you think positive you'll feel positive surely!

But there's a limit and four months of non stop rain is taking the piss! It's JULY.

However, I am excited about Christmas.

Angelico · 08/07/2012 13:52

Lou it is very hard to be positive when you have days and days and days on end of rain - which is regular where I live. Sometimes weeks, literally with nothing but grey sky.

The difference is any other year I would normally have spent the last week in Spain soaking up the sun which normally tides me over for a few months so I'm really feeling it this year.

Yes a few days of rain, even the really heavy stuff, is a novelty and kind of cosy but ffs surely the sun has to come out eventually?! Doesn't it?! Tell me it will!!!! Confused
