to think that Bourneville tastes horrible?

Never had it before, and thought I'd try it out as I rather like dark chocolate.

But it is the most horrible tasting chocolate I've ever tasted. So sugary, it is even more sugary than Cadbury's milk chocolate (which I love), tastes nothing like chocolate, never mind dark chocolate. And I paid 80p for the bar at the corner shop. I'm craving chocolate as it is that time of the month, so I was desperate for a choc hit, but eewwww.

My chocoholic DS, didn't ask for a second piece either, and he would eat a whole bar of chocolate if i let him.

So AIBU??

I hate all dark chocolate

GreenEggsAndNichts · 07/07/2012 00:49

Try the dark chocolate from Aldi. Bournville has a low cocoa content (iirc) compared with most dark chocolates. Aldi's is very nice.

To be fair, though, I'd eat any supermarket dark chocolate over Bournville. Howver, the Aldi one has a higher cocoa content, or did the last time I checked. I use it for baking all the time.

talkingnonsense · 07/07/2012 21:10

Bournville has always been very sweet and unlike most dark chocolates. I do quite like it to cook with though, it melts nicely. My fave dark choc is Lindt 70%.

BarredfromhavingStella · 07/07/2012 23:01

YABU-think it's quite tasty myself......

PrincessOfChina · 07/07/2012 23:08

SoleSource I pretend to live in Bournville. Actually I'm in a neighbouring suburb :)

I also happen to work for Kraft and am fairly sure that the recipe of all our chocolate has stayed the same through the takeover.

mummymeister · 07/07/2012 23:41

Hotel chocolate chocs have to be the best. am now fantasising about it as have been on a diet for weeks and not even a sniff. Caramac is actually my all time fav but not sure that this strictly falls into the chocolate category. always had a caramac egg at Easter - oh no i will never sleep now! Bourneville is best to cook with imo. especially home made choc mousse.

SoleSource · 07/07/2012 23:43

I'm about 15 minutes from Cadbury World. :)

ALittleScatterOfRain · 07/07/2012 23:43

YABabitU, it's really good in things. All dark chocolate's gone downhill recently thoughSad.

I used to love Black Magic and then they changed them to horrible ones. They then brought them back as 'Classics', but they're nowhere near as nice as they used to be.

Oh, I thoroughly agree about Thorntons, it's really sickly (except apricot parfait and the marzipan in dark chocolate, those are nice).

ALittleScatterOfRain · 07/07/2012 23:45

By 'in things' I mean like chocolate mousse, or chocolate chip cookies (and I always put a square or two in chilli con carne).

I'm just clarifying because I read my post back and had to think what I meant!

BedHeadTigi · 07/07/2012 23:47

OP you are right, it does taste horrible.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/07/2012 23:56

Dark chocolate is bloody awful. I mean, why would you bother? And anyone who chooses plain choc digestives over milk is certifiable.

exoticfruits · 08/07/2012 06:45

Dark chocolate is my one weakness- I love it! I can't understand why anyone would prefer a milk chocolate digestive if you can have a plain chocolate one!
(I don't count Bourneville though).

PrincessOfChina · 08/07/2012 09:31

Sole Ditto!

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2012 09:33

Cadburys Old Jamaica is my dark chocolate favourite. Hersheys tastes like candle wax.

holyfishnets · 08/07/2012 10:04

Bournville - ugh disgusting! Green and blacks yummy!! But have any have you tried a super healthy but super gorgeous OMBAR (the choc coconut one is THE best!).

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 08/07/2012 10:11

Cadbury world is my spiritual home Grin I've been twice with the ds's and just love it. The chocolatey smell, the shop, the architecture, the history.....

I'm a Brummy by birth and my uncle used to work for Cadbury.... I think it's in my blood.

Don't like dark chocolate though, Bournville or otherwise, it's all revolting.

pumpkinsweetie · 08/07/2012 10:16

Now kraft has taken over cadbury, all their chocolate bars taste over sugary and not at all the same.
I suppose kraft is more used to making cheese, not chocolate: yanbu, bournville used to be my fave

RuleBritannia · 08/07/2012 13:50

Green & Black's is / was a subsidiary of Cadbury. So that's now an American company, too, so the recipe will have changed to a make-you-fat one.

squeakytoy · 08/07/2012 13:55

They make a lot more than cheese Grin

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kraft_brands

A lot on there that I didnt even realise.. including Green & Blacks

SaltResistantSlug · 08/07/2012 14:50

Clearly you've not tried the Old Jamaica version...

neuroticmumof3 · 08/07/2012 16:26

I used to love Bourneville but it's vile now and I won't eat it.

Krumbum · 08/07/2012 16:43

It's not dark chocolate its plain chocolate. Completely different,
I quite like it, but I like milk and dark too!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 08/07/2012 17:58

I didn't know it had changed. It probably had too much veg oil in to be proper chocolate but I liked the slightly chewy nature and the way it melted in your mouth. Sad I haven't had any in years as I get my fix with poncier dark chocolate Wink, but when I was a milk-chocolate-hating child, it was pretty much all there was. I used to get a Black Magic easter egg, and I didn't even like the filled chocolates, but that was the only dark chocolate egg you could get.

I'm happy to live in a world where 3 for 2 promotions on Green & Blacks bars are readily available in most supermarkets! Grin

mackerella · 08/07/2012 18:52

YANBU, it's vile! I used to eat it as a kid, and thought I was being all sophisticated for eating dark chocolate Wink But I had some a few years ago and realised that it was actually chalky, sugary muck.

And anyone who prefers milk chocolate digestives to plain ones is clearly a nutter and not worth listening to...

BackforGood · 08/07/2012 19:30

YANBU to hold whatever opinion you want about Bournville chocolate, but I can't say I agree with you, nor these folks saying that the recipe has changed since Kraft took over. Lots of things have changed, but I don't think the actual recipes for the bars have.

I love a nice bar of Bournville myself
