To be enjoying 50 Shades of Grey?

Disclaimer: I've borrowed it from a friend Grin

Honestly, I almost couldn't be bothered to start it - I had downloaded the sample and wasn't impressed with all the oh mys and gasps etc....

But since it was a freebie, I had a go at it last night, and lo and behold, two hours had suddenly gone by and I'm half way through Blush and am quite enjoying it Blush Blush

Yes the writing style is quite annoying, but the storyline has managed to get me hooked, I have to admit. The shagging bits are a bit repetitive and I keep waiting to read something shocking but haven't found anything yet Grin

But overall it can't be that bad if it kept me entertained for two hours can it? (So far)....

Please someone agree with me!

Read The Story of O next.

badtasteflump · 06/07/2012 12:36

Ooh not heard of that - will have a look on Kindle - thanks Smile

But you didn't tell me what you thought of 50 SOG? Grin

Hmm...everyone seems to be reading / talking about this one. A friend said it distracted her on the 30 hour journey from Edinburgh to Dortmund (they drive with 3 kids). Hubbie somewhat unimpressed that I suggested reading it. But then he is a scathing Grauniad reader.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 12:58

I'm reading it at the moment but as yet am unimpressed.....am going to give it till page 100 then give up!

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 06/07/2012 12:58

the story of O is a classic

OP UABU!!
Have you read the 50 shades of MN thread (on the discussions of the day) It is much better. Made me laugh till I hurt. A pleasure/pain thing!

NellyBluth · 06/07/2012 13:11

I've nearly finished the first book, and tbh I'm quite enjoying - though partly because it is shite. I have a high tolerance for things like that (am an avid Mills & Boon reader at the moment) particularly when I get the sense that the author is tongue-in-cheek and knows very well that they are writing something cliched. They pass the time, at least, and are laughably entertaining.

However, as thatlldo says, the 50 Shades of MN thread is absolutely hilarious. I will love that thread forever for giving me the pleasure of the line "Bernard entered the room, roughly, from behind."

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 13:18

OP I thought it was so badly written I am stunned it ever got published at all tbh. and I read any old shite usually

Latara · 06/07/2012 13:32

I opened a copy at a random page and... ''her inner goddess hopped from foot to foot''... Right. wtf is an inner goddess, is the heroine of 50 shades not quite right in the head? Or does everyone else have inner goddesses & i don't?

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 13:33

An inner godess and a sub concious no less!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 13:34

Latara no, from what I have read so far she isnt...just the sight or even sound of this guy turns her into a sweating, swooning idiot.......I cant imagine anyone being that good looking....well, apart from Brad Pitt in the olden days :)

weasar · 06/07/2012 13:35

YABU - it's cack. HTH Grin

lazylula · 06/07/2012 13:55

Yanbu, if you are enjoying it then it no one else's business. I am reading book 1 at the moment and if I am honest I have read a lot better, but it is ok. I haven't found it to be compulsory reading like others who say they can to put it down. I am plodding on though!

NellyBluth · 06/07/2012 13:56

Latara - I don't. Well, maybe an inner smug, judgy-pants bitch, but...

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 06/07/2012 14:00

YABU - It is poorly written, "and for that reason alone I am out!" to quote Mr Bannantine. Grin
There are much better written stories on line for free, and I fail to see how this became so popular and they haven't. Amazing what media influence and peer pressure can do.

solidgoldbrass · 06/07/2012 14:04

YANBU to enjoy whatever you like. I can confess to having read and enjoyed some dreadfully badly written books in the past.
I don't like 50 Shades and TBH nearly everyone going on about how good it is hasn't read anything more demanding than Take A Break for 20 years, but it's more the hype around the book that annoys me rather than the book itself.

nizlopi · 06/07/2012 14:04

YABVU.

Alurkatsoftplay · 06/07/2012 14:05

I think it's fine to be enjoying it. It is not fine to go on about it on Facebook as though its the first dirty book in the world, ever or to tell everybody that Christian grey is your ideal man. That would be very wrong!

PetiteRaleuse · 06/07/2012 14:10

Yanbu. It's trash but i enjoyed it. Genuinely enjoyed it. The pisstakable writing was a bonus

scrambledlegs · 06/07/2012 14:20

I love a bit of serious literature as a rule (never read mills & boon etc) but I really enjoyed all of them.

I think people are getting their knickers in a twist for hilarious reasons. As of, just because it's a book it has to be judged alongside all the others.

It's a grubby bit of female fantasy but there's nothing wrong with that. I love the fact that men would watch a bit of soft porn after hours and then complain to their mates that it lacked the characterisation of Apocalypse Now.

And it's a middle aged woman's fantasy, not a reflection on her feminist principles or views on modern marriage.

Personally, I don't think it's the sec that makes it porn for women over 30. It's the clean clothes miraculously appearing in the wardrobe, the food arriving in the fridge ready chopped and the need never to look for a parking space.

Grin
valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 14:22

Amazing what media influence and peer pressure can do. and the fact that originally is was free on Kindle Wink

glastocat · 06/07/2012 14:22

There's a story line? Confused

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 14:23

It's a grubby bit of female fantasy but there's nothing wrong with that Too right, if it's half decent written!

scrambledlegs · 06/07/2012 14:23

However I did draw the line at DS's Year 1 teacher mentioning it. Wink
