Disclaimer: I've borrowed it from a friend Grin

Honestly, I almost couldn't be bothered to start it - I had downloaded the sample and wasn't impressed with all the oh mys and gasps etc....

But since it was a freebie, I had a go at it last night, and lo and behold, two hours had suddenly gone by and I'm half way through Blush and am quite enjoying it Blush Blush

Yes the writing style is quite annoying, but the storyline has managed to get me hooked, I have to admit. The shagging bits are a bit repetitive and I keep waiting to read something shocking but haven't found anything yet Grin

But overall it can't be that bad if it kept me entertained for two hours can it? (So far)....

Please someone agree with me!

YANBU

I downloaded it cheap onto my iPhone because everyone was talking about it!
I read it in 2 days, now can't wait to download part 2 Grin

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 14:24

Exactly, but so far, its just shite...I really hope it improves or I will have to give up. My fault, I buckled under peer pressure Grin

MarigoldsInTheWindow · 06/07/2012 14:25

my dp suggested getting this book for me yesterday in the hope of more sex.

i said no.

scrambledlegs · 06/07/2012 14:26

Listentoyourheart.

I read them on my iPhone too - which made it much easier to justify as not actually a real life book. Just a 'thing' on my phone.

Jeez, half of the things I read on here from you people isn't 'half-decently written' either but it still passes the time. Grin

scrambledlegs · 06/07/2012 14:28

I had more sex as a result Blush

Everybody always piles in on these threads and says 'blimey your sex life must be terrible if this perks it up' or 'you must be really sheltered if this is titillating'

Maybe it was. Ho hum.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 14:34

Apparently this book is the reason Kerry Katona dumped her bloke...she decided she wanted a Mr Grey in her life and that her bf was too nice. Says it all really Hmm

SausageSmuggler · 06/07/2012 14:47

I quite enjoyed it read all 3 in 10 days I didn't want to get sucked in but I did. I did have to pretend not to see a lot of the oh mys and really it is complete crap but it was an easy read.

lazylula · 06/07/2012 14:48

I would Like to state that I most definitely do not want my very own Mr Grey. He actually makes me feel very uneasy, quite possibly because some of his controlling traits remind me of an ex of mine, not a good memory!

lolajane2009 · 06/07/2012 14:51

i'm enjoying it too but tbh i had low expectations before i read it and i am surprised.

hackmum · 06/07/2012 14:55

50 shades of Mumsnet is one of the funniest things I've read in ages.

I refuse to read the Grey book because it sounds dreadful so can't really tell if you are being U. However, I had to laugh at the FB friend who said she had skipped the dirty bits to read the story. It's probably an age thing.

nomoreminibreaks · 06/07/2012 14:57

YANBU.

And what scrambled said.

I know it's not well written - and roll my eyes Blush every time she says 'Oh my' but it's not doing anyone any harm is it? I've just started the second book and feel like it's a turning point for me because it's the first non-baby book I've read in ages.

I did laugh when a girl at work suggested it for her mum's book club as she'd heard me talking about how popular it was. I can just picture them now...

ENormaSnob · 06/07/2012 15:05

Ive read all 3.

It's just easy, mindless reading. Perfect for holidays IMO.

I don't think the sex scenes are that racy tbh. Or maybe I am a big perve.

Can't see what she sees in him either really, controlling tendencies and manicured hands are not what I look for in a man.

lolajane2009 · 06/07/2012 15:18

nope the sex scenes are not racy imo either but then again i read fantasy romance usually and some of those are definitely oh my

badtasteflump · 09/07/2012 13:29

Ok well I take it back Blush

Limped my way through the rest of it over the weekend (well there was lots of sport on tv) and got more than a bit pissed off with repetitive language and a story that doesn't seem to go anywhere. And the ending is crap, and stupid. And am I the only one who doesn't find the idea of Christian Grey even slightly attractive? There's something about the writing style that makes me think 'ew' whenever he's mentioned.

I won't be 'borrowing' any more of them Grin

jellybeans · 09/07/2012 13:35

I haven't read it all yet but quite enjoying it so far. I find the writing style very funny.

badtasteflump · 09/07/2012 13:39

You know, I don't want to put you off but I think the first half was better than the rest - after a while the writing style stopped being funny and just started grating....

OP posts:
CleoSmackYa · 09/07/2012 13:49

I've caved and have got as far as the end of Chapter 1. I can see where the 'pain' part of it comes in now..... I've been in a BDSM relationship and I'm not holding out hope of accuracy from what people have said.

I want to point out it was free! Somebody was giving away the downloadable copy for free on facebook 'so nobody has to buy this crap anymore'!

badtasteflump · 09/07/2012 13:53

PS is it bad of me to say I was a bit meh about the sex bits? Nothing that out of the ordinary happened, did it? And I'm no BDSM expert Grin

OP posts:
JayelleBee · 09/07/2012 15:18

What out of the ordinary things could happen though? I can think of 3 orifices to put it in, hand jobs and twiddles, licks and tweaks of other bits (his and hers). Then you can add toys/ties/props/3rd parties.

What have I missed?

JayelleBee · 09/07/2012 15:20

Story of O and the sequel are very good.
