If you are ever standing in Comet being persuaded to buy their extended warranty DON'T BOTHER.
I paid not an inconsiderable amount for such a warranty for my washer dryer which subsequently broke down last week.
I have been told that I will have to wait TWO WEEKS for an engineer to come out and the possibly another TWO WEEKS to wait for parts to be ordered and another visit arranged because.....and wait for it.......THEY HAVE MADE THEIR SERVICE ENGINEERS REDUNDANT. ARGGGGH!!!!!!!.
Sorry for all the shouting but I am so angry.
So they have taken my money and now refuse to provide me with a reasonable service.
Customers say they have investigated my complaint but cannot do any more. Great!
I am drowning in washing with 2 DS and a mucky sporty DP.
All I can do is threaten them with the powerful influence of MN to 'out' their appauling service.

That is dreadful. We experienced similar treatment with British Gas when our boiler broke down in that very cold snap - we were paying out every month for their cover and then when we needed it they were overwhelmed with work so booked us an appointment 10 days later - when it was -12 outside! So we had to pay a local plumber instead.

I would complain to which? and also to any ombudsman - if there is one for these things?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 06/07/2012 10:16

I did think that THE WHOLE WORLD knew extended warranties were crapoka.

You silly sausage. Wink

wishiwasonholiday · 06/07/2012 10:18

I bought an iPad from their and they sold me their 'apple care' which they assured me covered all my apple products that I owned, turned out it was just the iPad and it was technical help from them if it crashed which I know how to sort myself and wouldn't travel an hour for! I went mad and got a refund it was far cheaper to insure them all properly.

gordyslovesheep · 06/07/2012 10:21

dunno though - I had extra cover on this very laptop - which broke 2 weeks ago, was collected by courier from work, fixed (new hard drive) and returned within 4 days by Comet

they also talked me through how to save all me stuff (I am a techno fuckwit) first so we didn't lose our holiday pics etc

curiositykitten · 06/07/2012 10:23

More redundancies? My dad was made redundant from them a couple of years back.

I know it's annoying for you, and I hope you can negotiate some sort of refund from them for your warranty. But try to imagine how much worse it is for those who've lost their jobs as a result.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/07/2012 10:26

Blimey, you were lucky to be approached by someone in Comet Hmm. I've often contemplated bringing in one of those big trolleys and walking out with a Smeg fridge just to see if anyone actually acknowledges me in there.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2012 10:26

We've actually found British Gas pretty good at coming out quickly. OK, so this winter it took about 25 visits for them to finally get to the bottom of our intermittently failing boiler - but they did keep coming back and did get it sorted whereas I'm pretty sure any local plumber would have given up on us.

But extended warranties - just do the sums on how much they cost and how likely a modern appliance is to break down in that period. They're never worth it.

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 10:43

I will NEVER EVER buy anything from COMET again, EVER!

Truly shocking customer service and after care. It took nearly a year to get an item replaced and ended up costing us £125 for an independent report to state that the item was faulty.

They eventually replaced the item but only when we were on the verge of taking legal action.

SardineQueen · 06/07/2012 10:54

YANBU Comet are shit. Got my fingers burnt with them about 12 years ago would never ever ever ever buy anything from them ever again ever.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/07/2012 10:55

Are you sure SQ? Your post was a bit ambiguous Wink :o

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 10:57

In fact recently we bought a telly from JL and paid £100 more for it than we would have in Comet but we were HAPPY to pay the extra money just so we never had to deal with them EVER again.

DowagersHump · 06/07/2012 10:59

Gwendoline - it's like that at my Comet too. I went and looked at some new phones last week. No one came to talk to me and I looked round for someone to help but there wasn't anyone.

So I walked out and spent my £90 elsewhere. No wonder they're making people redundant Hmm

And extended warranties are rarely worth it. Having said that, this is piss poor service. Can you find out the name of the CEO happyclapper and contact them directly?

SardineQueen · 06/07/2012 11:01

Lol Grin

Valpollicella · 06/07/2012 11:02

I'm sure Hugh Harvey (MD Comet) would LOVE to get an email from you.... [email protected]

Could be a dud address but hey, worth a go...

SardineQueen · 06/07/2012 11:02

Oh AND I tell everyone not to use them under any circs.

Take THAT, Comet!

hugsandbutterflies · 06/07/2012 11:03

I have extended warranty with currys for my tv and its been excellent. 4 times in the last year I've had to have the screen replaced (1 year old ds likes to throw things) and now they have given me £800 vouchers to replace it because it can't be fixed.

SardineQueen · 06/07/2012 11:04

Oh hold on, was it Currys?

Um... Blush

Well I expect they're both shit.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/07/2012 11:05

Yep, they're both interchangeably shit. Could nick a fridge from Currys too.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 06/07/2012 11:09

Extended warranties are an enormous waste of money. The chances of the appliance you have insured breaking within the 3 or 5 period are relatively slim, and the cost of insuring 2-3 household appliances will be much more than the average household will have to spend on repairs/replacements in a 5 year period.
Much better to put away the money you would have spent on the policies and use that pot for call out fees if and when you need them.

PC warranties are different if you don't have the technical knowledge to fix your machine yourself though, and for a lot of people these can be worth it. It does mean you have to deal with the numpties in PC world though Wink

RuleBritannia · 06/07/2012 11:18

I needed a new non-frost freezer for my kitchen earlier this year and found just what I wanted on Curry's website so went to their local showroom. It wasn't in stock there for me to look at it properly so they ordered one with the proviso that they would take it back if it were not the right size. I had a particular size space to fill with it. It arrived, the men put it into position and left. Then I realised that they hadn not put its handle on. There were no instructions with the freezer to do this so I started to make a noise. They would not send written directions and would not send anyone out to fit the handle. Okay, I was able to open the door by prising it open from the top but ..... In the end, I had to wait for a visitor to come a month later to do it for me

Birdsgottafly · 06/07/2012 12:48

I have found their cover invaluable on the laptops that i have bought, but we are careless.

The service has been good and it has worked out £100 for numerous repairs that would have been £100 each, at least.

Viviennemary · 06/07/2012 12:55

Over twenty years ago, (not that I'm one to hold a grudge) I bought a hoover from Comet. It broke down after a week. I thought I'd have no trouble getting a replacement. But no it would have to be sent away for repair. I phoned loads of times. The usual at lunch, day off, in a meeting and so on. In the end I threatened to come and stay in the shoop with the hoover and not move till I'd got a new one. (I woudn't have really) Well they gave me a new one. It was near Christmas and really busy. I've never bought anything from them since.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 06/07/2012 13:14

Vivienne - loads of shops do that, it really makes me Angry

If you buy something and it's faulty and you return it within the first month of purchase you are entitled to a full refund (not vouchers). I'm the kind of bolshy pain in the arse that would have stood in the shop with the broken hoover Grin

For the record - argos are really good at that sort of thing. I've had stuff break months after purchase (stairgate was the last thing) and they just refund it without even making a fuss :)

Viviennemary · 06/07/2012 13:30

Yes Jareth. Argos are really good about faulty items. We'd only been married a few months and DH was terrified that I'd cause a scene and be carted off to the police cells clutching said hoover. Grin
