Whatever they or anyone else thinks of Nick Clegg, spitting on him is no way to get their point across. It's a disgusting act and they deserved to be arrested. Hopefully they are charged and given a hefty fine, and maybe community service.

Yanbu. It's foul.

LST · 05/07/2012 20:11

YANBU. Disgusting!

Sallykitten · 05/07/2012 22:24

I live in Sheffield and have variously chucked chips and rolled up paper bags at his convoy and shouted wwwwwwwwwwwaaaaannnkkkeeeerrr -aaah! at him, nobody arrested me. Having said that there is a massive amount of proper crime, particularly car crime and bicycle theft at that college which the police do sod all about but I'm not optimistic enoughto expect this zero tolerance approach to extend to that.

bejeezus · 05/07/2012 22:27

Spitting is a bit minging

Tomatoes or eggs would be acceptable though

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/07/2012 22:29

YANBU. Vile behaviour, and they should be charged with whatever they can be too.

You sound lovely Sallykitten Hmm

bejeezus · 05/07/2012 22:31

But no, I don't think they should be arrested

Tony Blair wasn't arrested for an illegal war ffs

lisaro · 05/07/2012 22:32

Filthy skanks.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2012 22:33

Agree with bejeezus. Power to the people spitting is yukky, though.

bronze · 05/07/2012 22:35

Spitting is dangerous. If it went in his eyes it's a sure fire way of spreading disease

bronze · 05/07/2012 22:36

Sorry not sure fire but it can be a way to spread disease

PoppadumPreach · 05/07/2012 22:36

YANBU. They're obviously a bit thick.

I find it pretty appalling that anyone would condone chucking tomatoes/ eggs etc - that's assault surely? I thought John prescotts reaction to his attack was admirable though!

RuthlessBaggage · 05/07/2012 22:36

I have been having many discussions with 4yo DS1 about spitting this week.

Spitting is horrid. It is full of germs.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/07/2012 22:46

only if it applied to everyone. Why should it only apply if you spit at a person in a high position

elizaregina · 05/07/2012 23:00

well they did deserve it - its not acceptable but then it feels like the bankers are spitting and shiting on us all from a great height and crap all happens to them expect they dont take the " bonus" just the million pound salary and people have lost the roof over thier heads....

MrsReiver · 05/07/2012 23:02

I don't think that is the case at all McHappy Confused - but I'm not about to put it to the test.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/07/2012 23:03

It shouldn't McHappy.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/07/2012 23:21

but it does, if this had been anybody else they would of just had an on the spot warning.

also why was these women falsly detained They were detained by security staff and Mr Clegg?s close protection team before police were called. after reading a thread of MN about a friend shoplifting via self serve alot of member said they had no powers to detain a person. will they be arrested for holding 2 women illegally

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/07/2012 23:25

They were doing their job!

I think it's fair enough that the deputy PM gets special protection and slightly more police attention, because he is more at risk of being targeted than the average person.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/07/2012 23:27

there job is to protect the deputy PM, if he is in danger then whisk him away to saftey, that is there job.

the police job is to detain people

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2012 23:31

I used to work in a homeless shelter and was threatened a few times. I was more at risk of being targeted than the average person. Did the Police care, did they bollocks. I wasn't allowed to detain people until the Police got there, why should security?

edam · 05/07/2012 23:31

Good question, Mchappy.

There is a long and (ig)noble tradition of people throwing eggs and tomatoes at politicians in this country. It's what reminds them that they answer to us, not the other way round. I've never thrown anything at another person in my life, but I'd defend the right of the common man or woman to upbraid a politician any day. Ordinary people didn't get the right to vote by asking nicely, you know.

bejeezus · 05/07/2012 23:57

HERE HERE edam!!

McHappyPants2012 · 05/07/2012 23:59

well said edam clap clap

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2012 00:00

YANBU

Spitting at people is disgusting and the lowest of the low

Imagine if Nick Clegg had spat at them?

RubyFakeNails · 06/07/2012 00:02

She should have been arrested for that hair cut! Fuck me is that chic for Sheffield?

On another note spitting is disgusting but then so is Nick Clegg, I despise the man with the fire of a thousand suns so maybe I'm biased but I don't think they should have been detained by his security it's not their place and I think they should have just been warned away not arrested.

Agree they should have thrown eggs, preferably rotten ones the 'orrible tossedr!
