To wonder where all the average children are?

I am beginning to wonder if my DS is the only average child in the UK.
Listening on the school playground and reading here on mums net there appear to be two groups of children the super genius level 2a by the start of year one and the SEN children.
Am I being unreasonable to think my DS is not actually only child plodding on, making satisfactory progress in some areas and not much in others? Surely other neuro typical but not very bright kids still exist?

Mine is middle of the road too. never top but never bottom and happy to be so.

We will be told we should be pushing them more or somethingGrin

derekthehamster · 05/07/2012 13:47

I have a plodder, he's doing ok, although he struggles with literacy. He's a real charmer though Grin

carabos · 05/07/2012 13:48

I've got one. He's more than averagely funny though and he's got beautiful teeth. Grin

hermionestranger · 05/07/2012 13:49

I think you'll find that most of them are NT average children. Obviously mine are super gifted and talented and above averagein attitude. Grin

GnocchiNineDoors · 05/07/2012 13:49

If it helps, ive got a bog standard old baby.

She may turn into a musical genius or an axe murderer but atm she is plain old average.

scrablet · 05/07/2012 13:51

I've got two, but really they are the most wonderful DC's anyone could ever have and I wouldn't swap their personalities for all the brains they could ever have. (Not to suggest G&T children do not have great personalities, of course.Grin)

In my experience, the 'average' child will have a few things they are good at, a few things they suck at, and then a whole bunch of stuff they are competent enough in without excelling. In fact, that's what most adults are like as well. Your kids might be average at school, but better in other things, like sports, social skills, creativity.

It would be a highly unusual child that's average in everything. Smile

annalovesmrbates · 05/07/2012 13:51

I wish my DS could be average. He's not nearly at average, finishing nursery with a class of super bright children. Apparently.

Kveta · 05/07/2012 13:51

pretty sure my DS is average - DH and I always were, so expecting middling things of him :o of course, to us he will always be brilliant, but developmentally, he's bang in the middle!

Gin30 · 05/07/2012 13:53

My child is average and I couldn't be prouder! She does her best and is kind and sweet.

Though I have been told it must be hard having a child that is behind. How rude! She isn't behind. She is average and exactly where she should be.

N0tinmylife · 05/07/2012 13:54

I don't think there is such thing as an average child really, they all have something they are particularly good at, whether it is academic, sport, or simply being particularly funny or kind! I think most people on MN focus on the extremes, be it positive or negative, as that is where the issues tend to be.

DiscoDaisy · 05/07/2012 13:55

2 of my 5 DC are average and I am just as proud of them as my other 3.

Petsinmypudenda · 05/07/2012 13:55

Also be aware that people might not be truthful about their children's ability on here...

Blueoctopus · 05/07/2012 13:55

All those average children make me feel better, DS isn't very academic but he is quite sporty so maybe he will excell at that as he gets older. Anna I'm sure your DS will catch up soon and I'm sure his class aren't anywhere near all super bright :)

Well mine is average, but when you see them suddenly make leaps in their understanding and start reading properly, then you feel like they are just the smartest, brightest kids on earth!!! Love how they work things out, so fascinating! Grin

GeekCool · 05/07/2012 13:57

I have one! :o He's amazing. People seem to think "average" is a dirty word, as if somehow insulting. I've said he's about average before and people look at me like I'm weird.

Personally I think he's awesome :o

GrimmaTheNome · 05/07/2012 13:58

They're just getting on with life without their proud or worried mummys having to discuss their abilities on MN.

Petsinmypudenda · 05/07/2012 13:59

That's true chitChat for the first time ds1's reading age matches his age (9)and I feel like he is a genius

WowOoo · 05/07/2012 13:59

One of mine is in school and the other is merrily messing up a pile of twigs in the garden.

I'd say ds1 is strong in certain areas but lacking in others. Certainly very talented when it comes to goofing around. Smile

MissFaversam · 05/07/2012 13:59

I also have one and he's a gorgeous well rounded teen that goes "at his own pace" and so it should be.

bronze · 05/07/2012 14:00

I have
a way above
A bright
A below average
And a three year old who I suspect will be average
All 4 lovely

Kladdkaka · 05/07/2012 14:02

The SEN children? Hmm

Vagaceratops · 05/07/2012 14:04

DD is beautifully average.

Blueoctopus · 05/07/2012 14:05

Yes, SEN children, is that not politically correct anymore? It was when I was teaching. Sorry if I offended anyone. What is the correct term now? Additional needs? I can't think of an alternative.
