to wish that every person I speak to would stop trying to shove '50 shades of grey' at me??

ceebeegeebies · 04/07/2012 21:59

Everywhere I go, everyone I speak to seems to ask me if I have read it and when I say 'no', they try and persuade me that I really should blah blah.

I am stubbornly digging my heels in and refusing to bow to the hype with this book but wish my friends and colleagues would just stop (one of my colleagues told me today that her and her DP had sex 4 times on Sunday because of the book - I sat there wondering how me and DH would fit sex in 4 times with the DC running around Wink)

Seriously is it not just porn under another guise??

Of course it is. Tell them you have too much self esteem to bother with that trash.

Many women spend too much of their lives being submissive - we don't flaming well need to read about it as well.

SerendipitousHarlot · 04/07/2012 22:04

Matey - the same thing happened to me. I gave in and read it on my Kindle. It's shit, just like I knew it would be.

I like a bit of BDSM myself, but if I want to read porn, I will read porn - I don't like the idea that this is 'acceptable' mummy porn. Women have been reading/watching porn for years, and it's patronising to suddenly make it acceptable, like it's a favour.

PS. Did I mention it's shit? Grin

littlemisssarcastic · 04/07/2012 22:04

Totally agree OP. I don't want to buy the books, I don't have time to read them alongside my other books, but apparently I haven't lived if I haven't read them and must hotfoot it down to the shop immediately to buy them.

I think not, especially if the person pushing me to buy them is any example of what happens when you do read them. Blush

LST · 04/07/2012 22:05

I've given in. I haven't started reading it yet though..

lowestpriority · 04/07/2012 22:06

Sick to the back teeth of hearing about this sodding pap.
Have no intention of reading it just because I refuse to be a lemming.

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/07/2012 22:06

YANBU. It's shit.

Don't bother OP, it's utter shit. I think if your reading of choice is 'Take a Break', it's the book for you.

I am now hiding every FB post about Mr fucking Grey, whilst looking down my nose at anyone that has managed to get to the end.

KateShmate · 04/07/2012 22:08

I refuse to give in because I think the book sounds like complete and utter shite.

I really don't even want to read about that! Hmm

bignutbrownhair · 04/07/2012 22:12

I am convinced that there is some kind of alien invasion going on and EL James is behind it all - the people who think that this book is worth reading are the ones whose bodies have already been invaded. It is the only explanation I can think of as to why people are raving about this utter, utter shite. I am comforted to know that I am still me!

peeriebear · 04/07/2012 22:14

I went to DD2's class assembly this morning and the two mums next to me were discussing it really loudly and extensively. I was not any more encouraged to try it. Sounds like a load of badly written fanfic shite.

raspberrytipple · 04/07/2012 22:19

this has been driving me potty too, came up again last night. I found the respond 'I dont need to read it, I live it'... shut them up pretty quick. no one was really sure if I was joking or not. I'm still not sure some of them really know what BDSM is.....I can't really comment on it as I've not read the book but from what I've gleaned from others if you've played around with BDSM you're unlikely to find the book particularly exciting?

picnicbasketcase · 04/07/2012 22:22

Just read the 50 Shades of MN thread. It's uncanny

PlumpDogPillionaire · 04/07/2012 22:22

Just had to add another voice to reassure you it's shit beyond shit, would say it's 50 shades of shit, but that makes it sound far more nuanced and interesting than it is. It's dull beyond belief, truly. The least boring thing about it is the idea that anyone can be bothered to read it, then spend more time talking about it after having wasted every second spent reading it.
Seriously, I can't tell you how crap that book is.

Debeezandbirds · 04/07/2012 22:24

This makes great reading

Good for you for refusing. It's basically fan fiction about Twilight.

Gibbous · 04/07/2012 22:24

I've read a couple of free excerpts, one supposedly rood. It was the most over explained, mechanical unerotic thing I have ever read.

I just don't geddit.

If I want to read filth I'll read stuff that's a lot more erotic than that. If I want to read a good page turner I'll read stuff that's better written with a plot. It's neither,

In the same way Twilight took the sinister vampires out of the vampire myth (can't be seen in the sun, not because he'll explode, but because he SPARKLES FFS!) Fifty Shades of Shit has taken the sexiness out of sex.

And I feel really resentful that such a shit writer could be raking it in. Just because you're meant to be imagining Bella and Edward.

Mind I'd prefer not to put up with the backlash and keep hold of my soul.

carabos · 04/07/2012 22:34

I'm currently reading a biography of Mary Tudor. My friend glanced at it and offered to lend me 50 Shades "for when you finish that" Hmm. I thanked her but pointed put that as my last book was Hilary Mantel's Bring up the Bodies and my next is The Queens Agent, I'm getting quite enough in the way of BDSM thank you. She didn't get it. Wink.

mum2twoloudbabies · 04/07/2012 22:45

Haven't read it, won't read it. In the same way I haven't seen Titanic anything that is that much hyped is usually not for me and is usually utter trash.

I have very little time for reading now and like to spend it reading quality not trash.

Grin at carabos

Gibbous · 04/07/2012 22:49

Would you recommend Bring up the Bodies Carabos? I LOVED Beyond Black, sooo dark with all the mundanity of evil shiz.

Gibbous · 04/07/2012 22:52

Btw OP, did you deliberately avoid saying "down my throat" instead of "at me", or was it just luck?!

dementedma · 04/07/2012 23:00

so - you don't like it/don't want to read it.
Why "look down your nose" at those that do? it's harmless, people are enjoying it.For the sanctimonious and would-be high-brow I say "Fuck off and let individuals decide what they do or do not want to read".
who died and made you king/queen of good literature?

littlemisssarcastic · 04/07/2012 23:08

dementedma "For the sanctimonious and would-be high-brow I say "Fuck off and let individuals decide what they do or do not want to read".

Totally agree, hence why I'm a little confused when I state quite clearly it's not my kind of book, and I don't want to read it, I then get told I must read it, I haven't lived, I don't know what I am missing, I should buy it immediately. Surely I also have the right to decide what I do or do not want to read? Confused

Gibbous · 04/07/2012 23:12

Blimey Dementedma, settle down, it's only a book discussion! And it was pretty clear from the title where it was going...

SecretPlansAndCleverTricks · 04/07/2012 23:18

I dunno, it's interesting that a book is being discussed so much, I can't help but want to know what's in it, and will probably end up borrowing it off someone.

PorkyandBess · 04/07/2012 23:22

I reserve the right to be a snob about this book because as a piece of writing, it is diabolical.

No-one's going to be comparing it to Anaïs Nin anytime soon.

It is however, a marvellous example of excellent PR.

I'm all for this rubbish (IMO) book getting people reading, but when it's being called 'the best book ever', it saddens me.

Most of the people I've seen on my FB chuntering on about it, probably haven't read a book since they left school, and probably won't read another book again, apart maybe from the deluge of copycat books we can expect after this.
