My neighbour parks 2 or 3 cars outside his home, completely blocking the path. He has a drive and a garage, but chooses not to use them.

It's impossible to get past without going onto the road. He's very unapproachable and so I contacted the local council who told me to speak to the police.

The police said that unless he has all 4 wheels on the pavement, they can't actually do anything, but they did have a word with him and ask him to park more considerably.

This has really annoyed me, that he can just park where he likes, and I'm fed up with having to go onto the road to get by.

Is there anything I can do about this? I think the police have got it wrong. Am I being unreasonable to even care?

Depends whether you want to get involved in a neighbour dispute. Is he likely to turn violent?

PeazlyPops · 02/07/2012 18:03

According to other neighbours, yes. He apparently got into a fight with another neighbour, but I'm not sure what it was about.

Another neighbour has complained too, and the police said they'll put a stop to it, but obviously they haven't.

This sounds more like a council problem to me.

I'd go back to them and point out that he's blocking the entire pavement.

Though to be honest, I don't see how he is if he's only got 2 wheels on the pavement? Is his car that wide or is the path that narrow? Confused

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 02/07/2012 18:04

Is there pavement on the other side of the road that you could use?

PeazlyPops · 02/07/2012 18:05

He parks with the front of the car on the pavement right up to his grass, and the rest of the car hanging over onto the road, IYSWM. He also parks another car next to it, sideways.

curiositykitten · 02/07/2012 18:05

Is he just not leaving space wide enough for a buggy etc to get past? If not, I'd probably accidentally scratch the car(s) trying to squeeze past.

PeazlyPops · 02/07/2012 18:06

No, Outraged, it's a grass verge of the other side, unfortunately.

Are you saying he's parking with his two front wheels on the pavement, as opposed to the more usual two passenger-side wheels?

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 02/07/2012 18:09

Take a sneaky photo and complain with or without the photo (anonymously) on fixmystreet.com.

You will have to give them an email address but they will forward your complaint to the council and the report is then public (again you can be anonymous as long as you remember to tick the box) and I've found the council do tend to take these reports seriously when they get them.

The website will contact you in about four weeks to ask for an update

PeazlyPops · 02/07/2012 18:10

Boulevard, yes that's right, so no way of getting past the front at all.. Unless I walked on his grass I suppose.. Might try it actually!

PeazlyPops · 02/07/2012 18:11

Ooh thanks NoOnes, I hadn't heard of that site, will take a sneaky pic later.

I think you need to ask the police again as if blocking the pavement he should get a ticket .My niece has had a ticket and her car was parked with only two wheels on the pavement and there was just enough room to get past. The reason was that it was causing an obstruction and it was a £30 ticket if paid in 30 days.

RubyFakeNails · 02/07/2012 18:13

Thats ludicrous. But I would probably just go send Dh and tell him its not acceptable.

If it bothers you that much, take a picture each day, phone the council and kick up a big fuss. Complain, complain, complain until something gets done about it.

Make sure you explain its the 2 front wheels, and that its not even leaving a small gap.

PurplePidjin · 02/07/2012 18:15

If you can't get a buggy past you definitely couldn't get a wheelchair past, therefore he's deliberately denying access to disabled people...

TheMonster · 02/07/2012 18:16

walk on his grass.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 02/07/2012 18:16

You are welcome. You don't need the photo to use the website but I think it might help if they can see what you are complaining about as it sounds very odd.

You can add more photos and updates so if you do want to complain daily you will have a log of what happened when on the site.

MistyRocks · 02/07/2012 18:18

i would have to accidently scratch his car

the twat

Imisssleepingin · 02/07/2012 18:20

Yes you need to take it further, don't let him get away with it.
I also know someone who got a ticket for parking on the pavement.

GymBunny74 · 02/07/2012 18:21

AFAIK, it is illegal to park in front of a dropped kerb.

Contact your council and ask them to paint "H" bars at the kerb (if it IS dropped) then he can't park there again.

QueenStromba · 02/07/2012 22:30

I'm sorry I have no advice for you other than take a photo and go to the police station to show them and to the council offices if that doesn't work. This would make me really stabby because I can't stand people being inconsiderate bastards like this and getting away with it. I would definitely walk on his grass rather than going on the road - he's already lost the moral high ground on that argument and if he ends up with a desire path on his lawn he might think about not parking like such a wanker.

I used to park in a car park on a housing estate without any markings so everyone just had to rely on everyone else parking sensibly. If I was parking at the end of the row I would quite often reverse in and out until I was an inch from the kerb to give everyone else as much space as possible. If everyone was considerate then you could park seven cars in one particular row but we quite often got into situations where only 4 cars could park there because people would keep parking slap bang in the middle of two parking spaces or just far enough from either end that another car could almost but not quite park there. The really annoying thing was that once one person parked like a wanker it threw out the whole system for a week or two until eventually all the cars had moved back into a sensible place.

SundaeGirl · 02/07/2012 22:35

Wheel chair access essential. Stress this in all correspondence with him, the police, the council.

CaptainVonTrapp · 02/07/2012 22:40

IME of something similar you need the police not the council. And they can issue a ticket for obstruction. I would go back to the police and speak to someone else. My understanding is that if a car is on the pavement and causing an obstruction it can be ticketed. (regardless of how many wheels are on the pavement) And do the photo too.

NoraHelmer · 03/07/2012 13:29

I remember getting a warning from the Police when I parked outside a friend's house - there wasn't room on her driveway so I parked on the roadside but must have had a wheel or two on the pavement. The Police knocked on the door and asked if I could move the car as it was obstructing the pavement. Luckily I didn't get a ticket for it, but it was obviously an offence.

PeazlyPops · 03/07/2012 15:40

Thanks i'll go back to the police too. Its frustrating that he can just do as he pleases, especially as he doesn't use his drive!

OP posts:
PeazlyPops · 03/07/2012 15:42

Forgot to add that's neighbour took a photo a whole back to show the police, but he was told to delete it because it's illegal to take photos of number plates!
