I am currently staying in a hotel in kl. its full of all sorts of nationalities etc, who on the whole are lovely and really friendly and love playing and making a fuss of dc's.

Today is the first morning i hav breakfasted on my own with the dc's which are 10 months and two, i always have the staff playing with them etc.

all was well until a british lady came over and said in shocked tones " wow are you on your own travelling with two little ones, your brave" i explained that dh was at work etc, but was mortified and could feel the redness in my face. i didnt like the way she almost made me feel like i had to explian myself.

am i BU or just over sensitive

She wasnt saying that, it is the parenting equivalent of making a comment about the weather.

CharltonHairstyle · 02/07/2012 08:15

I think it was a compliment.

Don't feel embarrassed, sounds like she meant you were doing something she admired. Smile

rainydaysarebad · 02/07/2012 08:17

Is this a stealth boast? Can't see why you were mortified...

MrsBucketxx · 02/07/2012 08:17

I thought KL was Kings Lynn Blush

VivaLeBeaver · 02/07/2012 08:22

I often holiday with dd and leave dh at home. We've been all over the place, abroad, etc. I've often had people either on holiday or friends back home telling me that I'm brave for doing it.

I take it to mean that they wouldn't feel they could go on holiday as the only adult. In some ways it is brave - I have to deal with everything, what if I'm ill, what if dd is ill, I lose my credit cards, etc.

People may well assume I'm a single parent - but being a single parent isn't anything to be mortified about.

Ormiriathomimus · 02/07/2012 08:22

mrsb - I suspect it was more that you expected someone to come along and complain so when someone approached you interpreted it that way. But don't be offended. I am quite sure that if she wanted to say something nasty she could have been far more direct, or at least directed a cats bum mouth at you throughout breakfast Grin

Mortified? Mortified though? Oh OP how will you cope in an actual insulting and embarrassing situation?

out2lunch · 02/07/2012 08:24

its v much a brit compliment (slightly back handed though) i took my two dcs on holiday when they were toddlers and even now some of my friends can't believe i was 'brave' enough to do that
it was easy Smile we had a lovely time

MrsBucketxx · 02/07/2012 08:25

YABU

She was admiring the fact that you are managing well with little ones - maybe she wasn't able to do so with her children.

I do find the more I read posts like this on MN, the more I never want to say a THING to anyone I don't know ever again for risk of offending them Confused

YouOldSlag · 02/07/2012 08:26

YABU

It was friendly chit chat.

I am the world's most over sensitive person and I still cannot find anything to be offended about here.

MrsBucketxx · 02/07/2012 08:26

btw im not embarassed to be seen as a single parent. they are amazing and deserve medals.

they are amazing and deserve medals. That's probably what the woman was thinking about you! That you are amazing and deserve medals.

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 08:31

She was trying to be friendly, thats all.

SlimJimBra · 02/07/2012 08:32

Envy at you being in KL, I loved it there!
(And it was most definitely a compliment, the ham-fisted sort I often make Blush)

MrsBucketxx · 02/07/2012 08:35
