to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

Have just read all 6 pages in one go - whilst keeping looking behind me from sofa to check if someone's there! DH away too and huge lonley house with just me and kids.

I reckon that it's either:
a) plumbing/electric noise
b) neighbour looking
c) Gnocci having a right old laugh at us lots peeing our pants over her made up night time 'novel'.

Let's hope it's a) or c)

frustratedpants · 03/07/2012 23:26

Maybe gnocci is waiting for her sticker?

creativepebble · 03/07/2012 23:27

Ok, so have you been out today? Did you leave jam sandwiches and have you noticed anything going missing? Any footprints on the floor?

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 23:27

Is the cord leading into the ceiling near the hole then?

garlicbutt · 03/07/2012 23:27

Sweetheart, while I'm highly tempted to build your bathroom cord thingies up to a huge nightmare ... It sounds EXTREMELY likely that next-door has been trying to fix his malfunctioning light, and switched off the poser supply to your shower while s/he was at it.

The power supply to my shower (it's an electric one with a pull cord) goes through a white box that's on the ceiling outside the bathroom door. Have you got one of those? If not, it could actually be in the other house.

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 23:28

Oooh Gnocci....is there anyone you can call? You know the police would come out now...if you wanted them to check things out they would you know.

loopydoo · 03/07/2012 23:28

surely your ds could have pulled it? she says hoping

MamaMaiasaura · 03/07/2012 23:28

Could you have turned it off on a pregnant brain fry moment?

gnocci · 03/07/2012 23:29

Yes it is the electric shower cord, it goes into one of those little white square plastic boxes. It is against this box that the hole is...

I am utterly baffled by this...

You do realise it's because you didn't leave a jam sandwich Shock

UnrequitedSkink · 03/07/2012 23:29

Your mum might have turned the shower cord off? That's the kind of thing I'd do, I'm anal about stuff like that eco-friendly.

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 23:29

They would have to actually pull it from the other side Garlic...wouldn't they?

NoSquirrels · 03/07/2012 23:29

You said your mum had been babysitting today? Is she the sensible type who'd hear drilling next door, and turn off the power cord in the bathroom because of the drilling? My MIL would do that (my mum probably not!).

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 23:30

So he box is on the ceiling...the hole is next to it..the ceiling leads to the attic yes?

loopydoo · 03/07/2012 23:30

oh thank god - yes, i bet your mum turned it off - can you ring her now and check?

creativepebble · 03/07/2012 23:30

Did you have a power surge today?
Didn't you say you had your mother or someone there today (the person who said they could hear the diy from next door); could they have switched it off?

frustratedpants · 03/07/2012 23:30

Would dm have turned it off. That is a dm type thing to do.

umbrellaella · 03/07/2012 23:31

Gnocci, could you not send DH round to neighbour's house tomorrow under the pretence of 'our lights keep going on and off by themsleves - just wondering if yours are ok'?

This would a) allow you to meet said neighbour (which may or may not help put your mind at rest) b) possibly shed some light on the isssue - they may just be having problems with the lights due to house being split.

Or would this just be too frightening? Confused

ShellyBoobs · 03/07/2012 23:31

Ok, this is probably ridiculous but there's no chance the wiring is mixed up between the two houses somehow, is there?

If NDN has been doing some dodgy rewiring and not realised he's actually wired something into your circuit (assuming there is a shared attic or something?) could he be switching a light on after you switch yours off as your switch is affecting his lighting? Could that also be something to do with the shower being switched off?

creativepebble · 03/07/2012 23:31

This is all happening so fast...!

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 23:31

It IS rather a Mother thing to do isn't it? My MIL buggers about with plugs and things...

ohmysilverballs · 03/07/2012 23:32

:o

gnocci · 03/07/2012 23:32

One the white box it says off or on. You have to pull the cord to make it flick between off/on. There is a red light too. The box and cord are next to the shower in the bathroom.
