Feel a bit embarrassed

My in laws have DD for the afternoon. This morning was manic (it was DDs birthday yesterday) and so I hadn't eaten. By nearly 3 I was starving so popped into a coffee shop armed with a magazine and bought and ate a sandwich an cup of tea. I was still hungry and thirsty too so I went up for a cake, leaving my magazine on the table (te coffee place was empty apart from myself and an elderly couple.)

The girl who was serving chimed with "hello! Is your frien joining you?" I looked around all confused and made some "gahgarl?" noise! She then said "you were up before!" I nod probably looking really thick. "I wondered I someone was joining you!"

I'm sat with my cake now and they are giggling behind the counter.

Umm is it not the done thing to drink coffee alone? I always do!

Bizarre. Silly girls. Enjoy your cake - what flavour is it?

KatieScarlett2833 · 01/07/2012 15:19

Ask them what's so fucking funny.

Watch them cringe.

fireice · 01/07/2012 15:20

Its fine to drink coffee alone. Quite nice sometimes to sit and have some peace and read.

MammaTJ · 01/07/2012 15:22

I do that too!!

Odd girls!

missnevermind · 01/07/2012 15:23

Tell them you have left the children at home so you can have some peace and quiet, so would they GROW UP!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 01/07/2012 15:23

Aaaargh. Silly little insecure girls.

I have went to the cinema alone and allsorts. I hardly think having a coffee alone makes you weird. I see people doing it all the time.

Empusa · 01/07/2012 15:23

They are odd, there's nothing strange about sitting in a coffee shop on your own. I used to spend every lunch break in my old job sat in a coffee shop reading, I was never the only one doing it.

usualsuspect · 01/07/2012 15:25

How odd

BIGWORD · 01/07/2012 15:27

She was being cheeky to see if she would get away with it. Seems like she did and thats why they are giggling now.

Ask for the manager and see how much they giggle then.

TeapotsInJune · 01/07/2012 15:27

Thanks glad it isn't just me! I left sharp ish though (after eating my cake - blueberry muffin!)

Don't feel embarrassed. It's good you are comfortable enough with your own company to enjoy some time on your own like that.

DH and I take it in turns to spend a couple of hours alone out and about with coffee and a book. Not that often but perfect antidote to working and keeping toddler entertained.

WorraLiberty · 01/07/2012 15:28

Bizarre

CuriosityCola · 01/07/2012 15:30

I think you should complain. They were being very cheeky and it's none of their business. I don't think it is out of the norm to have a sandwich, drink and cake either. Hmm

GoOnTim · 01/07/2012 15:32

Fucking hate behaviour like that.

I would complain too, but I'm a miserable fucker and folks will be on in a minute saying "woahh wheres your sense of humour, jeeeeeez".

MittzbethSalanderLovesJuice · 01/07/2012 15:32

That's a shame, odd girls!!

Not only do I LOVE having a coffee and piece of cake by myself, I also bag the sofa in our local Costa, all to myself, which easily seats 4. As long as I am close enough I dump my shopping whilst in the queue, and stand patiently looking forward to having complete comfort.
It is possibly my most heinous crime!!

But the Baristas are lovely so Smile

lovebunny · 01/07/2012 16:22

they'll be thinking you're a heff for having a sandwich and a cake. were they thin girls? they're the worst.

LucieMay · 01/07/2012 16:25

It's very common to drink coffee alone! And to eat alone in a cafe. What rubbish customer service!

PollyDecker · 01/07/2012 16:32

I love tea & cake by myself! It is such a treat.

YABU to feel embarrassed - you have nothing to be embarrassed about.

Hope the muffin was good! Grin

rainydaysarebad · 01/07/2012 16:33

I would have given them a few death stares and then given them a piece of my mind before leaving.

brokendowndaphne · 01/07/2012 16:37

probably were giggling about something completely unrelated and you would have made yourself look a nob if you had made a scene about it :)

AuntieMaggie · 01/07/2012 16:39

OFFS

I eat/drink/socialise (?) on my own all the time when I'm away for work. Ignore them.

I think they were commenting on you having a sandwich AND a muffin (what a scandal Hmm) rather than you being alone.

The later giggling might have been about something unrelated, but I think you ought to write to the cafe and say that they made a questionable comment that you took to be about you buying two items from the counter, and then giggled between themselves, making you feel uncomfortable.

The two things might be unrelated but they are both bad customer service, and a decent manager would want to hear about it so they can have a word with the staff.
