to label kids stuff with a marker pen

In an attempt to be a proper mum I thought I might splash out and buy those stickers loads of people have but they are ridiculously expensive. it would be about 50 quid to buy to 2 x "value packs" for my 2 kids - I think that is mad or am I being tight?
Is there any cheaper alternatives - looked at stuck on you etc so far. or shall I just stick wth my trustee permanant marker?

I've always used permanent marker

Just remember it's not really that permanent, so check the labels when you're ironing and go over them again.

takingiteasy · 01/07/2012 11:41

Stick with the marker! I came across all domestic goddess with sexual on personalised labels but gave up after 3 and got the marker pen out!

takingiteasy · 01/07/2012 11:42

Sexual?!

Sew.

They were nice but not that nice.

MrsApplepants · 01/07/2012 11:42

Black biro works well too, if it's something small and marker pen too chunky

LeeCoakley · 01/07/2012 11:43

Why would anyone use anything other than a marker pen? One of the great mysteries to me.

WorraLiberty · 01/07/2012 11:44

I can't stop laughing at the 'sexual' on personalised labels Grin Grin

No wonder you switched to marker pens Shock

CecilyP · 01/07/2012 11:45

YANBU. No more to be said, really.

SoleSource · 01/07/2012 11:45

Marker pen. YADNBU.

Shock at sexual and Grin

notapizzaeater · 01/07/2012 12:59

Sharpie perm pen doesn't wash off ....

MrsSutherland · 01/07/2012 13:14

I have never seen ones that are that expensive, look on ebay/amazon or anywhere online. Go for iron on labels though. You can also buy iron labels that come with a pen that you write on yourself. Just a few quid.

I bought sew on ones when DS started school as I thought they looked nicer Hmm I can't actually sew AT ALL so I give them to my mum to do, she is unimpressed to say the least, especially as I also bought DS2s at the same time ready for when he starts school September, his uniform list is and A4 page - she will not be happy to find the bag of stuff I have left for her on her return from her holiday! Grin

TheProvincialLady · 01/07/2012 13:17

We just have the sexual ones. It is one of my mother's indicators of a sloppy parent to allow children's clothing to be written on. Really I should be embroidering their initials on, but I can only just sew well enough to manage sexual labels.

I should really get over this shouldn't I? I am a crap parent in most ways and don't think that Cash's labels make a lot of difference.

rainydaysarebad · 01/07/2012 13:36

I'm going to order some cash sexual labels once I get Dd's unif

Spero · 01/07/2012 13:38

My next door neighbour SEWED name tags into her daughter's school socks. I know this because my cat used to steal small items from their washing line. I think she had far too much time on her hands. Marker pen all the way in this household. Life is too short as it is.

rainydaysarebad · 01/07/2012 13:39

Oops...pressed enter too soon.

...orm. I have been told about them in the s&b section. I think it's neater and also I will feel like a proper mother if I sew something on for dd... I don't do enough of this sewing stuff like my mum did. She hand sewed my first PE bag with a drawstring and everything!

KurriKurri · 01/07/2012 13:40

Ha - I read your title and didn't notice the word 'stuff' - opened it thinking 'hmm, labelling kids with marker pen - that's an interesting idea' Grin

headinhands · 01/07/2012 13:41

Provincial - maybe you could remedy your aversion to writing in the clothes by using poncy calligraphy style handwriting?

HeadfirstForHalos · 01/07/2012 13:49

Spero at least you knew who to return the sock to Grin

I use sharpies and go over it every few weeks when they start to fade.

TheProvincialLady · 01/07/2012 15:16

Headinhands that would be a start wouldn't it? If only I wasn't utterly cack handed.

Spero, I sewed a name tape into each of the socks that DS1 wore to pre school. It's true, I have no shame and no life.

On the other hand, we have never lost anything.

takingiteasy · 01/07/2012 15:40

My mum had the job of sewing on ds's beaver badges but she cheated and used that wonder web stuff and they fell off! Useless granny!

CaliforniaLeaving · 01/07/2012 15:46

Sharpie pen here. Works great. I just have re do them once in a great while.

AbigailS · 01/07/2012 15:55

I'm a teacher and I use a sharpie. Just check it's easy to read; you might know it says XXX, but can all staff read it? And every wash, check it is still clear. I spend ages trying to decode faded writing on the labels for children in my class "Is it an A or H for the first letter" .... followed by squiggly letters as the name hasn't fitted into the space available. The mum and child recognises it but teachers, especially those from other year groups who gather lost jumpers from the hall or field, can't decifer it.

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 01/07/2012 15:57

I find biro works better than marker pen to be honest at standing up to the wash.
I do also sew in name labels. Not because I have too much time on my hands, but because I find sewing therapeutic (cross stitch mostly). I tend to sew the name label so it forms a useful loop to hang the item for so they can put their jumpers on their peg. I then write their name on the labels, and inside of the sleeves. Pen that won't wash off is better at safe gaurding than sew on labels that can be cut out. Labels are easy for a teacher to see at first glance.
Thank you for the reminder, I need to order some for DC.

ratspeaker · 01/07/2012 16:34

Magic markers or sharpies are brilliant for marking clothes.

I also marked toys, rulers, pencils, pens, footballs, pencil cases, school bags...

Now that I have 3 adult males in the house I still sometimes have to mark an initial when they have similar clothes.

peeriebear · 01/07/2012 16:44

I have some sew in tags for DD2 somewhere... Most of her stuff is labelled with marker though! I put her name on the label then her initials in big letters inside the collar so she can easily identify it herself (for jumpers/cardies, that is :))

flexybex · 01/07/2012 18:27

In the first PE lesson in September, I take a Sharpie and go round the class marking all the gear parents haven't marked. Last year about half the class had unmarked clothes, and the other half had clothes with obsessively sewn-in labels!

No need to be a martyr with the needle, ladies! Remember, a) no man would ever do it, b) it is a relic of the past (pre-Sharpies and iron-in labels) and c) your child will only look after his or her belongings if you insist they find things the minute they lose them. Contrary to popular belief there are no clothes trolls, just absent-minded little people!
