..don't feed the kids junk and then send them home full of crisps and popcorn and unwilling to eat something proper.

Dropped DD off at said party and table of food is already laid just with junk and a token amount of fruit.

YABU

My DD's birthday is in a couple of weeks and for her party I'll do what I've always done for my kids' parties

Little cardboard lunchbox with a round of jam sarnies, a penguin, a packet of hula hoops and a cash and carry fruitshoot-alike.

No waste, no mess, job's a good-un!

bejeezus · 02/07/2012 00:18

enfy how the hell do you know exactly what your dc eats at a party and in what order??

totallypearshaped · 02/07/2012 00:20

The answer to this is a nutritious breakfast.

There are fewer sugars in crisps than most brekkie cereals.

Go to work on an egg as they say!

Enfyshedd · 02/07/2012 09:29

bejesus - it was DSS2's birthday party which we had in our house. Not a lot of children invited (as he goes to a small school and I was 38wks pg!!) and I ended up eating most of the sausage rolls!!! Grin

Enfyshedd · 02/07/2012 09:38

I don't have a clue what DSS2 eats at any other party. Most of them have been held on a Friday after school which is when he's his BM's problem (DP has custody - their BM has them twice a week). And DSS2 can go really hyper when let loose on junk food.

You wonder why their BM gave them a shedload of junk food for his birthday party at her house (DSS2 had 2 parties. DSS1 told me what their BM had dished up and he hadn't been impressed by lots of greasy food).

Don't get me wrong, given half a chance they'd both have pizza for tea every day, but they both love raw veg & will steal half of the veg you've prepared for a meal before you can cook it if your back's turned.

IawnCont · 02/07/2012 09:44

I will probably have some grapes and some banana at DS1's birthday party in a fortnight (to balance out the tons of shite we've just ordered on Approved Food!)
Nice name Enfyshedd :)

If I go to a kids party I'm the one pushing kids out of the way so I can get to the party rings!

differentnameforthis · 02/07/2012 09:54

Isn't that the whole point of a party though? I pretty much work on the fact that a party that leads up to, but doesn't include a main meal (i.e lunch/dinner) will provide stuff that will wreak their appetite!

Parties happen so rarely around here that I can't make a huge deal of it.

DrCoconut · 02/07/2012 09:55

In general hosting a morning party is BU. The traditional time for a children's party is surely afternoon and you have a party tea?

TuftyFinch · 02/07/2012 09:58

these are the things I need to know:
What time was the party?
What age children?
What was the table laden with?
Have you hosted a children's party yourself?
What food did you laden the table with?

WorraLiberty · 02/07/2012 09:59

That would depend on the availability of the venue I suppose.

Either way, the last thing on my mind if I was organising a party would be the guest's dinner times and eating habits.

If they have highly strung parents who can't see it's ok to skip lunch because you've eaten party food, that's not my problem.

Just give them a bowl of cereals as soon as they do become hungry fgs.

Panzee · 06/07/2012 20:37

You're Carla Connor, aren't you? :o She's busy serving smoked salmon, humous, olives and goat's cheese pizza at a 9 year old's party.

girlpancake · 06/07/2012 21:16

Do kids eat anything at parties? Mostly they just seem to chuck it on the floor.

iscream · 07/07/2012 08:27

I didn't have food set out when kids arrived. I'd make hotdogs or order pizza during it. YABU, sorry.
