That's how fast I run. Just done a 10k and feel a bit shit. I wasn't last, but not far off. How can everyone run faster? Is about 10 minute a mile more respectable?

I'm over weight now, but even when I wasn't pre kids I rembet doing a half marathon in 2 hours 31 Sad

Err you ran, isn't that a feat in itself? Well done you.

Please do not feel shit. Otherwise I know where you live and I may have to come and tell you off Grin

cece · 30/06/2012 21:12

Well I run about that speed and I was feeling ridculously pleased with myself!

I go to a running group and we do interval training to increase our speed.

Memoo · 30/06/2012 21:12

Look, I'd drop dead before I got to the end of my street. You're doing good.

BellaVita · 30/06/2012 21:13

I don't really know where you live...Grin

WorraLiberty · 30/06/2012 21:14

I couldn't run a fucking bath

Well done! Grin

MrsSutherland · 30/06/2012 21:14

Just keep training, honestly you will get there.

I find of course the lighter I am the faster I am but even over my 'running' weight I am faster than when I started.

I started running 10km in about 1 hr 10 mins and after 4 months ran it in just under 47 mins. I was training at slower than this but apparently must have helped I guess. I also do circuits in between runs which involves lots of sprinting, this really helps your speed but if you don't fancy that then do some interval training, so sprint for a couple of minutes within your normal run, I'm sure the internet will have some tips for how to do interval training properly.

chibi · 30/06/2012 21:15

i run somewhere between 11-12 min/mile, depending on terrain, hills, whether i feel knackered Grin

i am trying to alternate working on increasing speed with increasing distance

i think to improve speed, interval training is best

Susieloo · 30/06/2012 21:17

Not lame at all, that's my average speed when I was running regularly, a ten minute mile to me is like sprinting, body shape and metabolism just not built that way, I think you did greatSmile

Sleepwhenidie · 30/06/2012 21:17

You ran 10k! You should be so proud of that - do you know how many people couldn't manage even 5k in the time you took to run 10? Speed doesn't matter, you are a runner!

And by the way, in terms of burning calories, it doesn't matter whether you walk, run or sprint, you would burn the same number Wink.

Margerykemp · 30/06/2012 21:19

Well I can't go faster that 30 minutes a mile so you should think yourself lucky.

ChaoticismyLife · 30/06/2012 21:20

Is this a stealth boast OP? HmmGrin

Seriously, well done for doing that, I couldn't. I keep saying I'm going to download that couch potato to 5km thing but still haven't done it.

BetterChoicesChair · 30/06/2012 21:23

Seriously? 10K is awesome, Lady. It doesn't matter how fast you go BUT if you want to work on speed do some fartleks and hill work. I don't know if you're trying to lose weight or not but speed is easier when you're near the lower end of your BMI (that may put you at risk for injury though). Well done, You Smile.

bejeezus · 30/06/2012 21:23

cece is that the speed you keep then, when you run with the group?

mrs that is an incredible improvement in 4 months!!! Shock well done!

susie yeah, it feels like sprinting to me too....I just don't understand how people manage to run at that speed Confused

Ok...need to train more obviously...just feeling deflated. Thanks for all your words of encouragement Smile

OP posts:
bejeezus · 30/06/2012 21:26

susie do you think bodyshape and metabolism really limit the speed you can go? Do you think you can't improve over a given speed?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 30/06/2012 21:27

I can't even run a km. seriously. I have tried and tried and I just can't do it.

So I think the fact you did 10km is bloody impressive Grin

MrsSutherland · 30/06/2012 21:28

Don't feel deflated, most people I know can't even run 5km! Maybe you could drop to 5km training to build your speed up to 10 min miles then increase distance by 10% each run (thats what my physio and PT recommended).

I honestly felt like you do about people that ran 10 min miles or faster but it just happens.

Don't overdo it though as its so easy to pick up injuries running!

Good luck!

cece · 30/06/2012 21:30

I am one of the slow ones in my group. Every now and again the majority of them get so far ahead of us that our running group leader makes them sprint back to us at the back and then they rerun the bit they have already run!

TBH I think the one thing that would increase my speed would be to lose some weight...

ameliameerkat · 30/06/2012 21:30

I ran my first 5k today and I was running about 6 and a half mins per km, so probably about the same as you (only over a shorter distance!!). I think you do amazing to run 10k!! I'm planning on doing more interval training to try and improve my speed. Like you, I wasn't the last, but I was definitely near the back...... We can both do it, I'm sure!! Grin

WestYorkshirePudding · 30/06/2012 21:32

Well OP, I'm running the Leeds 10k next Sunday and would be pretty happy if I run it at your speed! When I run in the gym I average an 11-12 minute mile but it's so much harder when running outside. Usually I run 10k in about 1 hr 10 mins and I'm more than pleased with that - this time last year I couldn't run a mile without feeling sick!

holyfishnets · 30/06/2012 21:32

Well done! I think the way to improve speed is to do short fast sprints and then slow jogs in between.

LadyBeagleEyes · 30/06/2012 21:33

Run?
What's that then?

JosephineCD · 30/06/2012 21:33

Just keep training. I was rubbish when I started, now i can do 5k (3.1 miles) in 20 minutes.

bejeezus · 30/06/2012 21:34

fox ah ha, see I bet you can....conversely I would tell you to run more slowly, and you will be able to do a km

OP posts:
notyummy · 30/06/2012 21:37

You can get faster via training. Don't beat yourself up too much. The fact you can run 10k means you are not terribly unfit. I firmly believe that everyone can get faster (up to a point) so I am sure you can if you want.

CurrySpice · 30/06/2012 21:39

I feel your pain op. I am struggling and struggling to get my 10k time under an hour Blush
