to think 12 minutes a mile is a bit lame?

That's how fast I run. Just done a 10k and feel a bit shit. I wasn't last, but not far off. How can everyone run faster? Is about 10 minute a mile more respectable?

I'm over weight now, but even when I wasn't pre kids I rembet doing a half marathon in 2 hours 31 Sad

bejeezus well done.
I am doing a 10k next week.
I doubt I will do it in less than two hours.
If I get round at all I will be awarding myself huge amounts of wine and anything else I fancy.

I am scared.
Specially as I have over £2000 in sponsership (mostly from you lot).
Eeeeeeep

HappySeven · 30/06/2012 21:44

Josephine and MrsSutherland, I am in awe of the pair of you! I run a little faster than bejeezus but, like her, can't imagine how anyone can go faster.

Well done, Bejeezus! I'm always really impressed by the people who turn up to Parkrun every week and come in in the later stages - so much more impressive than those who whizz round and must find it easy. (Although maybe I'm just jealous of those whizzing people...)

Susieloo · 30/06/2012 21:45

Bejeezus-I've always felt that way about my body shape and metabolism because even when I have trained really hard, hill and speed work combined with long runs, I have only ever been able to do one three mile run in thirty minutes and I really felt like I was sprinting, it feels really unnatural for me to run at that speed, I suppose if I had really kept at it I could have worked my way to a faster speed, I just know that for me that speed just felt wrong-I'm a hips and boobs kind of shape and I think I'm built for other things!

VolAuVent · 30/06/2012 22:20

Mile? Run?

:o

cece · 30/06/2012 22:26

pace calculator

HybridTheory · 30/06/2012 22:41

You ran it - congratulations! 90% (think thats the right stat!) of the population have never ran anything! You have just run 6.2 MILES!! Congratulate yourself! Some are gifted to run fast and some not so - doesn't alter the fact you are doing something amazing for your health and fitness. You are a runner and are setting a positive example to your children (lets face it none of us is ever going to beat Paula!) Keep going :)

MurderOfProse · 30/06/2012 22:44

Body weight, HUGE difference. In October I huffed and puffed my way to a 33 minute 5K. I then lost two stone, and didn't run again (did walk a lot though). Six months later I ran a 5K again. 29 minutes. I was no more cardiovascular-fit the second time than the first time, but those 30 odd pounds made such a difference.

Plus - practice! It's amazing how quickly you improve if you run regularly.

bejeezus · 30/06/2012 22:54

I DO fell that about my body shape too susie sometimes. I'm such a pear and not at all a natural or elegant runner!

Thanks for the pace calculator, that looks useful cece

hybrid I love that statistic! Really?? 90%? That does make me feel better Smile

And yes...body WEIGHT...I should loose 2 stone to ne back to pre baby weight, and be comfortably in my healthy BMI. I'm REALLY struggling to loose it.....got a toddler who doesn't sleep well, have recently got divorced so am SP and working....and I reach for chocolate and cake in timed of extreme tiredness. Am at a bit of a loss ad to hoe to overcome my vice and SN almost resigned to tackling it when dd2 is a bot older

But, maybe this is the incentive I need?

Hey well done op!

I started running this year and did a 10k with 12 weeks worth of training. When I started I seriously could not run a mile. But I did it in 1 hour 21 and ran all the way and felt marvelous.

I have a good friend who is an experienced amateur and who's completed lots of marathons (London, Berlin, new York) who told me to improve stamina you should run with tired legs and to improve speed run a shorter distance aiming to do it as fast as you can. I'm running my first half later this year so hoping this advice works for me!

howdoo · 30/06/2012 23:10

Keep going! You are doing brilliantly, and the more you do, the quicker and easier it will be. And you will be amazed at how quickly you get better. I started running 2 years ago, did couch to 5K, I have just finished my 3rd half marathon which I managed to do in less than 2 hours - a year ago I definitely couldn't do that. I don't FEEL any fitter, but I clearly am.

And what everyone says about weight is right, the more you lose weight the easier it is.

Please pat yourself on the back and keep going - as everyone else has said the vast majority of people can't do what you can do!

bejeezus · 30/06/2012 23:15

Oooooo....forgot to day a massive good luck to mrsDV!

I lost my weight through calorie counting (MyFitnessPal) and walking lots. I love my food far too much, and I have no willpower. I would walk ten miles so I could have a takeaway. Obviously walking for miles for hours at a time doesn't work so well if you're a SP and working (am a SAHM with a part time business), but running burns calories a lot faster so there's nothing to say you couldn't do similar to me - i.e. on days when you've been out for a run, you can justify cake!!

Most people roll their eyes when you mention running, but the truth is that they're jealous. Most people don't want to walk a mile to the next town/village, let alone run 5K.. and certainly not 10K at what is actually a perfectly respectable pace especially in the early days. Honestly, it is! I know loads of people who never get above 13/14 min/mile despite having been running for ages. Go you for being that person who does actually make the effort instead of just talking about it like the vast majority do.

Good luck MrsDV!! Wow at that sponsorship!!!! Grin

MrsSutherland · 01/07/2012 11:01

howdoo I thought at first you said you did the marathon in less than 2 hours - I was VERY impressed Grin, less than 2 hours for half marathon is brilliant of course!!!!

Flobbadobs · 01/07/2012 12:54

I can do a quick mile.... As long as it's down hill all the way Grin
i think you're doing brilliantly x

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/07/2012 13:15

You were still lapping everybody else sitting on the sofa though, weren't you?

If your performance bothers you, you can improve it, but take the time to appreciate your ongoing achievements otherwise you'll give up due to starting to believe your self-criticism.

BelieveInPink · 01/07/2012 13:18

10k is a massive achievement, well done!

I started running 10k in just under an hour, then got down to 42 minutes. Just by practicing, having short bursts of sprinting and going more than once a week. I'm at 7 minute miles now. Try speed training sessions at your running club.

I'm running the Great North Run for charity in September. My first half marathon. So out of my comfort zone.
