To take off my wedding and engagement rings

Love dh and there are no arguments or bad feelings.

Under the rings the skin is very dry and is peeling, I know if I take them off it will give the skin a chance to heel.

I feel though that I shouldn't take them off

Could you put them on your other hand for a while? Or on a nice chain to wear around your neck?

AliceHurled · 30/06/2012 20:34

I wear mine when I fancy it, take them off when I fancy it. Doesn't matter to me

McHappyPants2012 · 30/06/2012 20:35

Work wise I am not allowed

Other hand here.

CuriosityCola · 30/06/2012 20:41

I have taken mine off for the same reason. They don't fit my other hand weirdly enough. Do you think they need resized?

dearprudence · 30/06/2012 20:42

Of course YANBU. Take them off!

WilhelminaHarker · 30/06/2012 20:43

I wear a ring on my wedding ring finger but it isn't my wedding ring or my engagement ring, no less married though. As long as it won't cause issues with your DH then there is no reason not to take them off.

smoggii · 30/06/2012 20:44

Weight gain means that mine are in a bowl on the side at the moment. I will put them back on when i stop eating so much chocolate. I don't think DH has even noticed, or he's too afraid to say just in case I eat him!

Springforward · 30/06/2012 20:45

I have the same problem if I keep them on constantly (think soap/ handcream might be getting trapped against skin) so I wear them every day but take them off every night. DH does the same.

Gumby · 30/06/2012 20:46

Does it cost a lot to resize them?

marriedinwhite · 30/06/2012 20:46

YANBU - have done it to heal it up before. Have you changed handcream/washing up liquid. Handcream always brings me up in a rash unless it's v expensive and organic from Neal's Yard. Fairy Liquid is evil - might be great for plates but dreadful for skin - mine at least.

Bit of hydrocortisone cream will help. Feel for you - it's miserable.

RuthlessBaggage · 30/06/2012 20:48

I had to take mine off from about 26w pg this time (too many Biscuits Blush) and DH felt very rejected. So instead I decided to wear some earrings he had given me quite early in our relationship as a Valentine's Day present, and explicitly told him I was wearing them in lieu of the rings. That helped lots.

marriedinwhite · 30/06/2012 20:49

Mine don't fit the other hand either. I think it's because I'm right handed and all the exta work has built it up more. Also my right foot is a size bigger than the left and I suspect my hand is too. Had to have mine resized because I'm no longer the size 10 sylph I was 20 odd years ago. It was expensive because they had to remake a bead on the rim of the wedding ring and add a little gold to the engagement ring. I think it cost about £300 for both rings.

Didireallydoit · 30/06/2012 20:50

I have a wierd pregnancy allergy to mine so I have to take it off.

edwinbear · 30/06/2012 20:51

I take mine off all the time, I never wear them swimming and I take the kids 3 times a week. My mum lost her wedding ring in a swimming pool when it slipped off her finger so I never risk it.

ceebeegeebies · 30/06/2012 20:56

Haven't worn mine in over 7 years Blush Had to take them off when I was pregnant with DS1 and have never lost the weight since (I was a skinny minny when we got married Grin)

DH brings it up at least once a month...I know I should them resized but I just keep telling him that I will wear them when I lose weight.

As it is, they are gold and I always wear silver jewellery so I am not in any rush to put them back on as they will clash (when we got married 15 years ago, white gold was unheard off Grin) - DH is not impressed with this explanation.

Flyingwithoutwings · 30/06/2012 21:01

I have chapped / sometimes bleeding skin on my knuckles need to buy a dish washer and under my rings. I keep my rings off at home but wear them when I leave the house.
I think it's a good compromise.
I use The Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector, it's fab. Use hydrocortisone cream if it bleeds.

eurochick · 30/06/2012 21:03

I take mine off a lot. When typing (engagement ring is quite rough and I figure I'm less likely to forget I've taken them off if I take them both off), washing hands, sleeping, washing up, all sorts. They are off more often than they are on. It means nothing about my marriage.

PrincessScrumpy · 30/06/2012 21:11

I wore mine on a chain through both pgs as a friend had to have hers cut off due to swelling. I hated the thought of not having them on me so round my neck was fab (I fiddled with them all the time).

I took mine off when I did amdram once and people were horrified in the village - I pointed out that if my marriage was so fragile that it would be over because I wasn't wearing a ring then we'd have big problems, but even without the ring on, I'm pretty good at remembering I'm married and love dh! Grin

marriedinwhite · 30/06/2012 21:18

ceebeegeebies that's interesting. The stones on my engagement ring are set in white gold and the shank is yellow gold. My wedding ring is a white gold band in the middle flanked by yellow bands. It is small and quite dainty and I chose it to complement the engagement ring.

Just put the lights on to check - the diamonds are set in white gold (also my eternity ring) but the saphire in the centre is set in gold. The bands are gold.

sarahtigh · 30/06/2012 21:34

I get simialr problem I wear my rings when out of house all the time but today when just doing houesework and watching wimbledon \they are off

Just remember always to put them in safe place, I can wear mine a max of 4 days continuously without chafing red skin, if it gets bad then can not wear for over a week while it heals.

did not know had this problem before I got married as never wore any jewellry constantly wore it some times not others

I lost first wedding ring, my current ring is 22 carat and is much better, than 9carat one but obviously more money

TheCountessOlenska · 30/06/2012 21:43

I take mine on and off all the time - I can't wash up with them on for example.

I lost my original (cheap as chips) engagement ring because I have lost weight and it just flew off my finger somewhere but DH recently replaced it with another one which I love more anyway!

Don't feel especially sentimental about them but would be gutted if I lost my granny's amethyst!

Yama · 30/06/2012 21:48

I stopped wearing my engagement ring ages ago as I now don't agree with the concept.

My dh wouldn't want me wearing my wedding band if it prevented my skin from healing.

roseum · 30/06/2012 21:48

I take mine off all the time - at night because I am terrified I'll whack my hand against something, thrashing round in my sleep, hit a fault-line on the stone and shatter it (unlikely I know). I also take them off when washing up, when gardening (do not want to lose them in the garden), when changing DS's explosive nappies (I do not need that in any of the crevices on the ring), when doing housework/ moving stuff around, etc. As long as you remember where you put them, I don't think it matters at all if you take your rings off.

Maybe talk to your GP about why your hand is reacting to the rings, and if there is anything you can use to help prevent it.

Mayvis · 30/06/2012 21:50

I only wear mine if I'm going out. It just doesn't feel right having them on at home, they come off as soon as I get in.
