Thank you whyme2 that's a lovely answer.

I like the idea that once upon a time there were herds of unicorns roaming the plains, frolicking in the riverbeds and posing majestically in front of rainbows.

Just off to take my Minotaur out shopping and then I'll check back later

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 30/06/2012 08:23

lurking I find the idea that a horse may have reached an evolutionary branch whereupon it grew a horn very believable. I mean, look at the deer, the moose, the rhino. All animals with horns. So I can believe that there is a possibility they may have existed.

They are also mentioned (several times) in the bible, but this is discounted by a great number of Christians. Is this because of the evolution thing? I don't know. I'm not a Christian. There are lots of Christians on MN. Where might be a good place to canvas opinions? Hmm...

Ds2 would love a Minotaur, did you get it from Pets at Home? Grin

whyme2 · 30/06/2012 08:27

I am a Christian who believes in evolution. I don't believe man evolved from other species or anything but in terms of different species changing over time ...... it can't really be sensibly denied - just look at all the different types of dogs you can get now compared to 100 years ago for example

pandapiebald · 30/06/2012 08:28

Fwiw I know several Christian couples that waited till marriage - that is of course why they all were married in their early twenties Wink

mummytime · 30/06/2012 08:31

Most Christians realise the bible wasn't written in English, and even most (if not all) fundamentalist Christians (who are the ones who believe in the bible as the literal truth, none of it as allegory etc.). Therefore different translations do translate different words differently.
The King James was a great translation but did have a lot of cultural biaise, it mentions witches a lot whereas no other translation I know does.
The whole of the book of Job is full of lists of creatures which it is hard to identify, the translators of the King James tended to translate them as things they were familiar with. Others have tried to reconcile them with real creatures, but it is quite possible that some (maybe all) were the mythical creatures of that part of the world.

However if you want to know what happened to the Unicorn you need to read The History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes.

GoodButNotOutstanding · 30/06/2012 08:32

What evolution thing? Most Christians in this country believe in evolution. I certainly don't take the Creation story as a literal account of what actually happened. My belief, and the belief of other Christians I know, is that God guided evolution.
I am perfectly happy to believe that unicorns may have existed, I just think it more likely that they are an imperfect description of an animal we know now by a different name.

www.unicornlady.net/legends/evidence.html some interesting unicorn theories here

Thanks mummytime looks like a good read, but will have to wait until I've finished game of thrones! I'll stick it on my wish list.

is it just me or has anyone else noticed that some people are talking this just a little bit too seriously?

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 30/06/2012 09:08

Some people take life far too seriously. It's a bit sad really. They need more unicorns in their lives obviously.

I have gone off unicorns but have decided to get a parrot and then teach it to say "help, I've been turned into a parrot!"

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/06/2012 09:16

I'm a catholic and I don't find this thread offensive. We have no evidence that Jesus did not have a sense of humour after all.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 30/06/2012 09:18

Jesus turned water into wine. He's good in my opinion.

my ex's mum went to a zoo and asked where the push-me-pull-you were.

IllageVidiot · 13/10/2012 01:22

I remember having my innocent child's heart crushed by my Unicorn experience.

I was really excited because I was being taken to a circus that had Unicorns of more than one size! Amazing! All was great until they came in and my poor little eyes had to watch a fat auld Shetland pony trot around the ring with it's elasticated strap on slip on horn flapping sadly up and down with every step. Gutted. Ruined me forever that did.

So, my personal theory is that this circus did for the Christians what it did to me.

Startailoforangeandgold · 13/10/2012 01:24

lurking I'm sorry, but fairies, father Christmas, God, Allah, all the Hindu gods, unicorns, ghosts etc are all equally fictitious to me.

They helped people make sense if the world before science, that's all.

Oh and I think sillybeardydragonman has been drinking he's particularly silly tonight.

IllageVidiot · 13/10/2012 01:29

However it is true and honest fact that Santa Clause lives near me through the summertime.
I speak to him all the time and as proof - when my DD asked him, vair discreetly if he was he said, and I quote 'Santa wouldn't be able to tell anyone he really was Santa, it would be terrible for Christmas because he'd never get anything done. He might be able to give you a sign if you guessed though.' DD 'You are Santa!' Santa Bearded neighbour: wink, nose tap.

Totally true.
