Apologies if this has already been covered.

I am Jewish by descent but an an agnostic. I think the time has come to say that being religious is not an excuse to carry out mutilation of small boys.

Obviously Female circumcision is already illegal but the same protection should be given to boys.

Meant to add and I wish Britain would follow Germany and do the same.

HazleNutt · 29/06/2012 13:49

"Compared to male circumcision during adulthood or adolescence, infant male circumcision is safer"

Yes that's probably true (circumcision still kills about 100 babies in the US each year), only thing is that unless there are medical reasons, it is not necessary. Condoms are more useful for AIDS prevention. It's like saying that cutting big toes off babies is much safer than cutting them off adults and also beneficial, no in-grown toenails!

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 29/06/2012 13:54

YADNBU!

Though my father is Jewish, my mother flatly refused to have my DB circumcised. As religious as I am, lopping off the body parts of infants in the name of religion is disgusting.

If a man grows up and wants one, then it's his decision and I don't mind. How a parent can be so cruel to mutilate their baby and cause such pain is beyond my comprehension.

FioFio · 29/06/2012 13:55

There are survivors of the holocaust still alive today, I am sure they don't feel it's in the past :(

I feel the same way as hackmum

camaleon · 29/06/2012 13:55

Crescentmoon, thank you very much for the data. It is difficult for me, as a matter of principle to see this as beneficial. However, i also know the WHO has had big resistance to accept the benefits of male circumcision until strong scientific evidence was provided.
Still it is well known that all this research was very much back-up by US money with a clear agenda. In any case I find it very interesting. And if people start practising on the best interest of the child and not justifying it solely on 'cultural grounds' that can be respecte equally in adulthood i am prepared to change (gradually) my mind.

FioFio · 29/06/2012 13:56

There are millions of men the world over who haven't been circumcised and they have no problems with hygiene!

HA! all the men in my house are soap dodgers

trixymalixy · 29/06/2012 13:59

I also agree with hackmum. Of course the validity of the court ruling should be the same whether the court was German or another European court, but surely you're not so naive to see that for Jewish people who lost relatives it's not easy to put it in the past and see the ruling as completely unbiased?

thanks for sharing slipperynipple ,

I hate that people are allowed to mutilate children and babies, allow them to choose when they are adults.

well done Germany.

vess · 29/06/2012 14:20

It's a brave decision.
I think it's right in principle, but in practice will cause all sorts of problems.

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 29/06/2012 14:41

if your going to use anal sex as a basic form of contraception ( as is the practise in some parts opf africa, hence their stance of circumcision) then better get circumcised, if not, dont.

I agree and I speak as the mother of a circumcised boy.

rainydaysarebad · 29/06/2012 14:57

Aribura, that's a pretty shitty narrow minded comment you made there. How dare you insinuate that just because a mother chose to have her children circumsized, she is automatically a monster and bad parent. Who made you the judge of good and bad parenting? Really, tell me.

GrapesAnatomy · 29/06/2012 14:58

Whilst you are all shrieking and beating your breasts could you stop for one moment and consider those of us whose sons have been circumcised for medical reasons. I find it utterly offensive that anyone would now perceive my son as 'mutilated'.
I appreciate what you are saying about the child's lack of choice but to use such an emotive and offensive word for what is often a medical procedure is foul. Will you be shouting at parents whose children have to have limbs amputated that their children are now mutilated.
I'm not missing the point and I do understand what people are so angry about but think carefully about what you are saying when you brand all men who are circumcised as mutilated.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 29/06/2012 15:00

Something that has always haunted me is that there was a case of boy who was brought up as a girl, in the days when they thought you could change someone's gender by simply treating them as of that sex Hmm. Anyway, the reason they did this was as the result of 'botched circumcision' where the baby's penis was burnt off. That poor, poor little boy - made me so angry - mutilation of a helpless child is not defensible.Sad

rainydaysarebad · 29/06/2012 15:00

Sorry but I find that a personal attack on someone. Of course discuss her decision for circsizing but dont attack an individual for their decisions. Your post has really pissed me off

valiumredhead · 29/06/2012 15:01

I agree grapes

jellybeans · 29/06/2012 15:04

'Just because something is tradition, doesn't mean it's right.'

Well said jammysplodger

It has no place in civilised society. There are alternative non cutting Bris avaliable for religious reasons. I used to hate watching those US birth shows where they always seemed to circ boys for dubious reasons such as 'to look like his dad'. Also hate it when you hear grown women saying 'but circ'd penis' look better' It is barbaric and should be banned asap unless medically required. A male can always choose it for himself when he is 18. Let them choose for themselves ffs.

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 29/06/2012 15:04

i agree with aribura
it disgusts me also

if you cant see it as the only form of barbaric mutilation of infants that has somehow ( inacurate claims to hygine probobly) creept into the west and is deemed acceptable then yiu just dont want to see it.

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 29/06/2012 15:06

grapes , if it's done for medical reasons thats totaly different. no one objects to that.

FioFio · 29/06/2012 15:08

I don't think Aribura is real
