What the fucking hell is shit like this doing in the Maternity section?

Have a look at the other products they classify as Maternity Care. 2 TENS machines, 4 support pillows and 6 weightloss products!

Yeah, because what pregnant women need to do most is diet Angry

SoleSource · 27/06/2012 21:32

After pregnancy some women diet.

LLJ4 · 27/06/2012 21:35

Angry indeed.

Goofymum · 27/06/2012 21:36

I don't think this machine is about dieting, it's about body fat percentage and BMI. Alot of pregnant women will want a healthy pregnancy where they do not increase there body fat percentage. Some women may want to monitor that in pregnancy, some after pregnancy.

SoleSource · 27/06/2012 21:38

I was in hospital for 12 weeks after my baby was born, I wish I'd have had something to use to help me reduce my weight. Not everybodies circs are the same.

PurplePidjin · 27/06/2012 21:39

Fair enough, but surely that should be in a Diet and Fitness section not Baby & Toddler -> Maternity! Healthy eating is encouraged in pregnancy, fine. Weightloss obsessing? Angry

JumpingThroughHoops · 27/06/2012 21:45

Some people are overweight when they conceive and do need to restrict their intake even when pregnant.

TruthSweet · 27/06/2012 21:48

Erm - you aren't supposed to use body composition monitors during pg as they measure the time electrical impulses take to travel through the body (not good apparently for those who are pg or who have pace makers). Nice to see there's not a warning on the Tesco page! There is here

I get where you're coming from and i respect it. Hmmph. You are right!

YADNBU

TruthSweet · 27/06/2012 21:52

That's my point it has no place being in Maternity Care as a) it's unusable during pg and b) it's nutty to suggest that women place that much emphasis on weight loss that they have to monitor/control the natural weight gain during pg. I am agreeing with you I promise Grin

PurplePidjin · 27/06/2012 21:53

Dammit! I should know better than to behave rationally by now. I'm the AIBU dunce!

OP posts:
Goofymum · 27/06/2012 21:56

Well it definately shouldn't be in the maternity section if the electrical impulses can harm the baby in the womb, or at least if it's intended postnatally then warnings should be clear. Weightloss obsessing not good in pregnancy. Maintaining a healthy weight and BMI good. Just wish I had heeded that advice.:-)

ChaoticismyLife · 27/06/2012 21:56

FWIW I agree with you. It's in the wrong place.

RightBuggerforit · 27/06/2012 21:57

Some people are overweight AND pregnant, doesn't make it right to have this shit in the maternity section. The overweight and pregnant can look in 2 separate sections - same as some pregnant women will have all sorts of other needs/issues/interests (older children, diabetes, studying etc), they're not merging those sections together, just the weight loss things. I think it's really bad.

PurplePidjin · 27/06/2012 21:59

I was just browsing for a cheapie Doppler thing because dp can make scans but not mw appointments.

Some women do need nutritional guidance during pregnancy - that's something midwives do! Not Mr Tesco trying to guilt me into trying to shift this last half stone instead of concentrating on trying to produce a well-nourished human being Angry

I expected that section to be full of Pregnacare and massage oil, tbh

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 27/06/2012 22:07

Goofy, I don't imagine seeing weightloss aids in the Maternity section helps people at either end of the BMI scale. Hope you're ok now :)

Right - exactly my point, it wouldn't occur to me to look in that section for that product. You don't look for bananas in the cat food aisle... (mind you, my local one stocks Quorn slices in the Cooked Meat section which strikes me as both illogical and offensive to vegetarians)

It's got a nasty undertone of misogyny, too - like the most important part of caring for a pg woman is keeping her "in shape"

OP posts:
SoleSource · 27/06/2012 22:42

Could there be an error on the part of Tesco? Or maybe their research has shown this is a popular product for post pregnancy products?

Tis odd and worrying.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 22:48

Why has this made you so angry?

bobbledunk · 28/06/2012 00:20

What's wrong with wanting to return to good shape? Many women do get a bit fat in pregnancy between ravenous hunger that means you have to eat or feel hideously ill, mobility problems caused by spd and other pregnancy related issues and not being able to exercise as intensely as normal (or move as fast). Everybody's different of course but most people do have weight to lose and most of those want to lose it. Weight gain is a part of pregnancy so why shouldn't weight loss aids be in the maternity section? You don't have to use them, they're there for those who do.

Krumbum · 28/06/2012 01:59

I agree op, it sends the wrong message.

piprabbit · 28/06/2012 02:05

YANBU.

I notice that they haven't put maternity bras in the laundry section just because some people doing laundry will also be pregnant or BFing.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 28/06/2012 02:12

You ladies seem to be forgetting that pregnancy is no excuse not to be arm candy for your husband. Poor man, having to put up with a disgusting wife..Hmm

Yes, that was extreme sarcasm. If I said what I really wanted to say I'd be banned.

PurplePidjin · 28/06/2012 07:37

It's not in the post birth section. If you look at the link, the pictures are all of pregnant bellies

Of course we should stay healthy - but encouraging serious dieting during pregnancy should be left to trained medical professionals assessing individual cases IMO.

OP posts:
SoleSource · 28/06/2012 09:33

Is there a post pregnancy section?

PurplePidjin · 28/06/2012 10:10

I think it's just called "health and well being" Sole. The only time a woman needs special treatment for these things is when pregnant (breast feeding??) otherwise there's no physical reason - barring medical diagnosis - not to do WW/SW/Atkins etc

I wonder if i can be arsed to look it up there are similar products in Men's Health?
