What the fucking hell is shit like this doing in the Maternity section?

Have a look at the other products they classify as Maternity Care. 2 TENS machines, 4 support pillows and 6 weightloss products!

Yeah, because what pregnant women need to do most is diet Angry

Yanbu, shameful!

Goofymum · 28/06/2012 12:56

I saw pregnancy as an excuse to eat loads, some healthy some not and 4 years after DD2 I still have 3 stone to lose to get to a normal BMI. Monitoring my BMI and body fat during pregnancy wouldn't have appealed to me at all but I have known some women who do not put on an ounce of fat (other than natural baby/womb weight) and that is a conscious effort on their part. I think a BMI monitor would appeal to them.
Anyway, I'm off to read the "doomed to be fat forever" thread....

TroublesomeEx · 28/06/2012 13:29

Well not everyone puts on loads of weight when they are pregnant, and not everyone wants too, and not everyone sees it as a licence to eat. Some people might actually want to keep an eye on their weight.

It should have a warning though, I'm not really sure those should be used by pregnant women....

Krumbum · 28/06/2012 23:07

There's a difference between not gaining much weight during pregnancy and dieting and selling pregnant women diet products. You also don't have to be rude folkgirl

TroublesomeEx · 29/06/2012 07:05

I wasn't being rude!

Just stating a fact.

It's become so accepted that women will 'eat for two' and deal with the consequences afterwards that anyone not wanting to do that is seen as letting the sisterhood down and being more concerned about being "arm candy for their husband".

If people can be vociferous about a woman's right to gain weight during pregnancy, surely it's ok for someone to be equally vociferous about their possible desire not to! Just sayin'...

PurplePidjin · 29/06/2012 07:41

I'm watching my weight because I want to make sure my unborn PFB gets a healthy start in life. But, my eating habits have had to change because I physically need more food more frequently. I'm finding it very hard not to feel guilty for overeating, even though it's my protein, fruit/veg and fluid intake that has increased. It would be extremely easy to slip one way or the other - either stuffing my face with pasties and puddings in the belief that I'm "eating for two" or denying myself the extra and feeling hungry most of the time.

And I've got a pretty healthy attitude to food. I'm quite capable of ignoring pressure from society. There are many many otherwise intelligent and sensible women who struggle with food and are therefore vulnerable to the hidden messages and subtle hints.

How often do we see "shock as X Sleb is still chubby 4 weeks post partum" in a magazine, or an acquaintance insisting we have another biscuit "because you're eating for two".

Promoting body fat monitors makes me Angry because it's got fuck all to do with healthy eating and everything to do with being arm candy. If that's someone's choice in life, fine. But it's irresponsible to actively promote it during pregnancy, when even the strongest woman is vulnerable.

This should absolutely not be in the pregnancy section. Mum and baby section fine, lots of women want to lose weight after baby is born. But for those of us who were on the chubby side before we got knocked up, and dont wish to end up with even more to lose afterwards, following a calorie controlled diet while pregnancy should only be done under the supervision of your midwife or gp, with support from an organisation like ww or slimming world who will suggest a diet which allows for the growing baby whilst encouraging overall weight loss!

Rachog · 29/06/2012 09:27

Yanbu it should.be in diet and.fitness.

TroublesomeEx · 29/06/2012 11:04

Well perhaps women should stop buying shit 'sleb' magazines if then.

I don't think it should be in the pregnancy section because of the risks of using the device itself.

It's not compulsory for anyone to buy one.
