Aibu to not want to go and see my class

Because I haven't had chickenpox?

Just that really. I'm on maternity leave expecting baby in two weeks. A friend of mine has shingles, and told me that at her daughter's pre school some kids have been off with chickenpox; lots of kids at our school have siblings at this per school (not sure if the shingles can possibly be related? Coincidence I think?)

Anyway, I need to go into the school where I teach to pick up a memory stick I need, but I don't want to get any closer to potentially chickenpoxy kids than I can help. My friend, who is the secretary, pointed out that I could catch it from anyone anywhere, in a shop for example, and was a bit funny with me, which is true, but since I am hardly leaving the house at present ( started mat leave earlier than I was going to cos of health problems), that's not very likely.

So, would I bu to go in and get what I need and not go and see my class, or would that be mean as has been implied?

If its just a memory stick could they not post it?

larks35 · 27/06/2012 12:26

It isn't worth the risk, ask your friend to post it to you. YANBU.

fedupofnamechanging · 27/06/2012 12:27

Could you go in after school - doesn't completely eradicate risk, but does minimise it. I don't think yabu to not want to expose your unborn baby to infectious illnesses. I think this must be recurring problem for primary school teachers.

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 12:27

I could pick it up myself after school anytime, I have keys, but my class are " very keen to see me" and it is mean of me not to come in (paraphrased, but that was the very clear implication)

fedupofnamechanging · 27/06/2012 12:28

Oh, and it doesn't matter what your friend thinks - it's not her baby!

WorraLiberty · 27/06/2012 12:29

But they won't know you've been in, will they?

ilovesooty · 27/06/2012 12:29

You're on ML. You shouldn't feel under pressure to go in and see anyone. Tell her to get stuffed.

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 12:30

She and my teaching assistant think I should come in and get the memory stick, and then go and see the class on purpose, sorry I wasn't clear.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 27/06/2012 12:32

You were clear. You should still tell them to get stuffed.

If you're on ML would you even be insured to be there?

hermionestranger · 27/06/2012 12:33

Tell them you're too ill right now but promise to come and visit with the baby instead. The kids will love that

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 12:33

Oh - and shingles friend is not secretary friend, two different people, just retread the OP and realised that wasn't very clear either! Blush

PandaWatch · 27/06/2012 12:33

It's not like (I assume) the class have all been told you're coming in and are going to be let down if you don't. I think it's wholly unreasonable that your friend and the teaching assistant are pressurising you like this. Totally unneccessary. I would ask them to post it to you and not go in at all.

Sarcalogos · 27/06/2012 12:34

I'm a teacher.

Don't do it.

Don't let them guilt you. You have very sound reasons for not wanting to do it. Also, on maternity leave you are under no obligation to work or take part in school social events, including class visiting.

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 12:35

X posted - glad it's not just me - I got the impression she thought I was being vair precious when I spoke to her, and then I had a text from my ta telling me how much the kids want to see me.

OP posts:
CremeEggThief · 27/06/2012 12:36

Don't go in. They're bu, not you.

DeWe · 27/06/2012 13:05

You can't catch shingles from chickenpox.
You can catch chickenpox from shingles.

So your shingles friend could have given the children (and you if you've seen her) chickenpox. However she hasn't caught chickenpox from the children.

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 13:08

But I could now get chickenpox from the children if they are incubating it. Secretary friend says none of the kids at our school have got chicken pox, but they might be infectious and just not ill/spotty yet?

OP posts:
Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 13:11

Just how catching is chickenpox? (ignorant emoticon)
What if I popped head in and said hello and didn't go near the germ ridden creatures little darlings?

OP posts:
myBOYSareBONKERS · 27/06/2012 13:12

DO NOT GO IN. So what if they think you are being PFB - are they aware of the risks of a newborn with chickenpox???

I am not PFB but I would definitely NOT go anywhere near the place

naughtymummy · 27/06/2012 13:12

Absolutely you can get chicken pox from the.children .Stay away they are BVVU.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/06/2012 13:14

Do not go in. Chickenpox can kill very young babies.

They are being unreasonable, really unreasonable.

PrettyFlyForAWifi · 27/06/2012 13:17

Don't go in. This would be (not to scare you) the worst time to get chickenpox in your pregnancy. Totally irrelevant that you could catch it in the street; you don't have the option not to go about your daily life but you do have the option not to walk into a classroom of potentially chickenpoxy children.

knowitallstrikesagain · 27/06/2012 13:17

YANBU

Anyone who makes you feel otherwise is totally U.

And what on earth could you possibly need from school 2 weeks before your due date that could not wait?

tethersend · 27/06/2012 13:23

Chicken pox or no chicken pox, don't go in.

Do you really need that memory stick?

Tell the secretary to tell the kids you just don't love them enough Wink

Cathycomehome · 27/06/2012 13:27

I do need the memory stick if they're going to have reports.

Grin at tethersend.

Right, resolve stronger now, thank you for advice, am staying away from the poxy little blighters.
