"why the hell do tourists and non-Londoners walk 4 abreast down the pavement at a snail's pace?"

Er, because lots of people have told them it's a nice place to visit? :o

yellowraincoat · 27/06/2012 15:57

Does that mean they need to block up the entire pavement so people going to work can't get past?

HellonHeels · 27/06/2012 16:00

YABU to hate London.

YAB a bit U to hate the tube because it's great for getting from A to B, just not that comfortable for doing so. I prefer commuting by bike if I can, I sweat less on the bike than on the tube :o

Olive28 · 27/06/2012 16:01

Hmmm, London commuters... why do they feel the need to walk twice as fast as anyone going to work anywhere else? Confused

fizzyapples · 27/06/2012 16:03

The tube is fine, it's the feckers who use it that are the problem Grin

yellowraincoat · 27/06/2012 16:03

Because they spend a lot more time commuting, Olive?

unluckycat · 27/06/2012 16:06

London is incredible, the tube is too really, though I struggle to remember that on days like today when sat on it for two hour long journeys with a six month old, the two of us clammy and pissed off, and six flights of stairs overall to bump the pram up and down (though we were lucky enough to be offered help every time).

forevergreek · 27/06/2012 16:27

London commuters have average double the commute. Therefore I save leaving hour early instead of 25 mins everyone speed walks.

I have a 30 min walk, 10 mins super speed walk. I choose to speed walk to stay in bed Longer and actually eat breakfast. I'm out of the house min 12 hrs per day as it is don't want to Increase it to 13 hrs

'When a wo/man is tired of London, s/hei s tired of life'

I'm not tired of London yet but I'd rather be in Barcelona or Lisbon, or Stockholm, or Chania, or anywhere other than the capital of the UK for the next couple of months.

Pootles2010 · 27/06/2012 16:58

Oh I do love the tube, but as said earlier maybe I wouldn't if I lived in London? We have 2 hourly buses, I don't drive (medical reasons) and they stop at 10pm, so a night out ends at 10pm or with a £45 taxi. You have buses, and tube trains every few minutes, tis amazing!

Jins · 27/06/2012 17:01

Yanbu about the tube. I can't comment about London itself as I've only been a handful of times and while it's not for me I understand that a lot of people think its the best city in the uk Grin

AuntieMaggie · 27/06/2012 17:36

Agree about the tourists walking slowly!

London is so humid at the moment its playing havoc with my asthma and hayfever.

I love london when I'm not there for work and the tube is good for commuting but not good atm esp with luggahe!

I walk fast (and jog up the escalators/stairs if I can) partly because my commute is long enough already without dawdling, and partly because you might as well get some exercise out of it.

It's true though, horrible as the Tube is it is a very efficient and convenient way of getting around. Everyone complains about the delays, but for the most part it all works very well. I rarely wait more than 2 minutes for a train.

Olive28 · 27/06/2012 19:50

"When a wo/man is tired of London, s/hei s tired of life"

I couldn't disagree with this popular quote more. I don't like London but enjoy life outside it. Most of what you can find in London is available elsewhere, of course.

Olive28 · 27/06/2012 19:52

Tourists are just as entitled to walk slowly as commuters are to walk fast.

Maybe there should be paid-for sections of go-faster pavement (a bit like the toll motorways!) :o

yellowraincoat · 27/06/2012 19:55

This week, I have

been to see a play by the RSC
been to the Science Museum
been to the National Theatre
been to the National Gallery
eaten at a school dinner type cafe
eaten in a Turkish restaurant
worked with people from at least 6 or 7 different countries

And I really doubt I'd have done any of them if I didn't live in London. So I really disagree that most of what you find in London is available elsewhere. Certainly not arts-wise.

yellowraincoat · 27/06/2012 19:56

Sure, they're entitled. Bloody rude though.

For someone who dislikes London, Olive, you sure like talking about it.

Jins · 27/06/2012 20:02

Arts are available elsewhere though. Confused. There are some fantastic museums in other major cities and sometimes there are tours of particularly important works, plays, whatevers. It's easier in London to do these things because you've got better transport on the whole. But we're no cultural desert you know.

What we don't get so much of oop north are musicals. That's a good thing Grin

Shakey1500 · 27/06/2012 20:05

I used to work for the underground. Best part of the shift? Seeing a full to bursting platform during rush hour and being able to hop in with the driver Grin

horseygeorgie · 27/06/2012 20:11

I love London on a visitor basis, but by gawd can you tell I'm a country bumpkin! I hate the tube - terrified of escalators.

yellowraincoat · 27/06/2012 20:34

Jins, I know there are arts in other cities. There's nowhere near the range and breadth though.

I have lived in other cities in the UK and nothing begins to compare.

Luckily no-one forces you to go to musicals, in fact most Londoners avoid the tourist spots.

Jins · 27/06/2012 20:39

One of my neighbours goes to London regularly but weirdly only for the musicals. Each to their own. Grin

Olive28 · 28/06/2012 18:00

yellow are people not allowed to talk about things they don't like on AIBU? Confused

Anyhow there are theatres (including the best theatre companies on tour), quality galleries and museums, a wide variety of eating-places/cafes/Turkish restaurants, and even (!) "people from different countries" in various other cities in the UK. So I strongly disagree that you couldn't have had similar experiences outside London!

usualsuspect · 28/06/2012 18:06

It makes me laugh how some posters think theirs no diversity outside of London.
