"I understand from the news that the software problem was fixed very quickly but it appears to have taken much longer to deal with the complications that arose from this problem. Now Im obviously very sympathetic with the people who were without cash but surely they dont live from week to week do they? They should always keep some cash in reserve, just a few hundred pounds maybe and also why could they not get cash out on their charge or credit card?"

On another forum I post on. I'm thinking about boycotting it once I've flamed the living daylights out of the poster

How can people be so ignorant of the tight money situation that many people are in?

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:23

Chuff - definitely not a troll. They also despise the Fail. The issue was with software and was fixed quite quickly, but the knock on effect was massive.

Sometimes people don't realise that money can be life or death. YANBU to be offended however I know I'm guilty of judging people by my own standards, and not understanding when they make what I think are daft statements

Disclaimer: I am author of many daft statements myself.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 26/06/2012 16:24

I cant believe you use other sites! traitor!

Quenelle · 26/06/2012 16:24

Some people are just totally unable to put themselves in other people's shoes. I don't like to wish misfortune on others but sometimes...

Did anyone else on the forum challenge the poster? By rights they should be getting a good flaming.

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:25

Curryspice - yes, this is what I was thinking. People who could not get to the bank, not being able to meet payments, people who could not buy food like my friend.

I have a colleague who could have posted that. She's very much a 'daddy's little rich girl', one who never looks at price tags when she's shopping (which she does on an almost daily basis) and has recently been boasting about how she has bought an entire new wardrobe for her upcoming honeymoon. Some people really do have no clue how the majority of people live.

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:26

Not yet Quenelle. It's moderated so my posts aren't even on there yet.

I hardly ever have cash in my purse, let alone a 'few hundred pounds in reserve'. Where would I put it, down my bra?

Curry that guy on the radio (I didn't hear it btw) but his mother could also be systematically defrauding him, which is probably why they wanted to see him in person. Although that's a complete aside to the thread Grin

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:29

Barbarian, you make a good point there, but I suppose I'm looking at it from the point of view of hard working families who only just make ends meet as it is.

OP posts:
BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:33

Oh, here's another one just gone up:

"I know there are people that live hand to mouth, some because they have to but many because they choose to. I couldn't understand why they couldn't use credit cards but I expect some have reached their limit, again many through choice"

Who the hell lives hand to mouth by choice?? Where do you get this magical credit cards?

I realise that it was disasterous for people who really needed the money and realise that some families have been unable to buy food and other essentials due to this error.

However, I was reading the messages about it (as someone who banks with Natwest) and I was surprised that sooo many people claimed to be on their last £3 or whatever.

I have a large arranged overdraft to deal with this kind of emergency, and I am rather surprised that so few other people had. Or that they had all completely maxed it out and had no credit cards either. Really?

I have also learned through bitter experience that one person's "broke" is another person's, "oh it's ok I have enough".

I used to live with a friend who had the exact same amount of money as me. (I know as we were students paying the same rent) who used to chase me round for hand outs, invite me out to the shops/pub etc and then annound I was paying at the till, beg for time on my phone as I chose to have contract and other similar things. Then one day it transpired she hadn't paid her rent as she was spending it on clothes/cds other crap. She was always on her "last £3" too.

the tone of some of the posts set my spidey sense off too.

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:34

Yes, I see what you mean Barbarian. Although I think much of that attitude has changed with the credit crunch (at least I hope so).

OP posts:
PotteringAlong · 26/06/2012 16:35

I've changed my credit card this week as I've realized that having a credit card and bank account with the same bank might not be a good idea.

My penny jar would also be in action if it all went pear shaped. Actually, I think there is more cash in DS's money box than anywhere else in the house and that's not saying a lot.

redcarnations · 26/06/2012 16:35

I bank with them and haven't been able to get any cash since last week. Luckily I have plenty of food in as shopping came last Mon. I could bus it to the nearest town but as my son has chicken pox it's not an option.

Dd's teacher was very snippy with me for not paying £36.00 for her school trip by Monday as requested and advised that "I always keep £100 cash for emergencies, I like to be organised". I took great pleasure in taking the money in that afternoon courtesy of my 20p jar. I hope she had as much fun counting it as I did Grin

CurrySpice · 26/06/2012 16:35

Wilson you old cynic! Wink

I think he might've noticed though, being as he does internet banking...

FioFio · 26/06/2012 16:36

bloody hell, does he./she not realise that some people have to live DAY to DAY rather than week to week a swell? Shock

Neither dh or I have a credit card either, evil things

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:37

Ethelb - I haven't seen those messages, on here do you mean? I also bank with Natwest but it didn't affect me as I didn't have payments due in or out at the time. However, I have almost no disposable income or savings, no overdraft and no credit cards. I live within my means and have no debts, but had it been payday, I'd have been just as stuffed as others were.

Swatchdog · 26/06/2012 16:42

Excellent work, redcarnations - I'd have been inclined to ask her why she thought paying for a school trip came under the heading "emergencies" whilst paying too Smile

BumpingFuglies · 26/06/2012 16:44

Dee, I feel for you. Have you spoken to them? I thought RBS was sorted, it's just Ulster Bank that's not?

OP posts:
Sassybeast · 26/06/2012 16:47

The ignorance is astounding. I don't live 'hand to mouth' and I budget carefully and live within my means. If I have any money left at the end of the month, I transfer it into an online savings account. The nature of which is that I have to transfer the money into my current account in order to be able to access it. This time last week I wasn't particularly concerned - I could never have imagined that the problems would last this long

I receive tax credits weekly, and child benefit and my wages monthly. Last week, I didn't receive tax credits. Today, neither my wages, tax credits or child benefit have been paid into my account. The 'few hundred pounds' that I should have just lying around is being spent on food, petrol to get to work. My account isn't empty. Yet.
