...to not want to say my name when ordering my coffee?

I'm not a miserable cow: if you work in a coffee shop I am happy to greet you, smile, say please & thank you. But I really really don't want to tell you my name, like I'm at a group therapy session. I am quite introverted & self-conscious and that kind of thing makes me want to run screaming.

Mind, I hate Starbucks so am unlikely to go in there but read about this policy in the paper & wondered what I'd do should the situation arise...

Jane is such a cool name - I may use that

TiggyD · 26/06/2012 20:25

I don't drink coffee because I'm English, but if I went in for a hot chocolate I would say my name was:

Costa is Better,

or

Mr Parasaurolophus,

or

Bogies!

or even better, the same as Hugh Laurie in this clip.

RecursiveMoon · 26/06/2012 20:26

I don't want to tell them my name either. They probably won't have heard it before and won't know how to spell it either. I fibbed the last time I went, but felt a bit Angry at that seeming like a reasonable option.

Next time I'll say 'Bloody Starbucks, just give my flat white already.'.

The non-problem could easily be solved by a number system, all of this first name terms nonsense is just a silly marketing ploy.

newlark · 26/06/2012 20:26

I went to Starbucks today for the first time in ages and found it a bit offputting to be asked my name - will avoid in future...

CelstialNavigation · 26/06/2012 20:33

I tell them my name is Latte. While ordering a cappuccino. That confuses them.

DeckSwabber · 26/06/2012 20:48

I heard the 'don't tell him, Pike!' story as well...

Just say 'Fenton' and run away.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 26/06/2012 21:10

I give the name Cafe Nero or Costa Coffee when in Starbucks.

They haven't used it yet.

Kevin Bacon Grin

oopslateagain · 26/06/2012 21:38

I give the name "number 23".

Apparently it sounds just like "soya latte" because that's what they announce. Grin

One day...

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/06/2012 22:21

Is Pookie Quesnel one of the names from all the name game threads?

Olive28 · 26/06/2012 22:32

YANBU, why on earth should they need your name? Very strange.

I've only been to one coffee shop that did that (could well have been a Starbucks). They didn't even politely ask "may I have your name please?" It was just "Your name is.........?" which I loathe!

RubyGates · 26/06/2012 22:44

Your name is?.....
None of your damn business!

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/06/2012 22:54

I would be really tempted to lay claim to being the real slim shady if anyone said "your name is...?" to me.

hawkmoon269 · 26/06/2012 23:26

See, I love this because I can try out other names. Genius. I'd never give my real name - booring...

Tomorrow I'm going to be Zebediah. Oh yes.

Olive28 · 26/06/2012 23:48

What's wrong with the old number-on-a-wooden-spoon? Much more British :o

I was standing behind someone who, when asked for his name, leant across and stage whispered "I'd really rather not say - the person behind me is following me and I don't want them to know."

Which might have been funny had I not been the person behind him.

And NO, I wasn't following him!!!

SoleSource · 27/06/2012 00:15

STALKER ALERT ^^

Ah this reminds me of a funny story my brother told me. He was on hols in america and went for a coffee. The girl asked his name and he said 'Finton',she started sniggering at him and kept it up while the coffee was being made. When his order was ready she gave him a huge grin and said 'coffee for the Phantom' :O

lovetomoan · 27/06/2012 13:19

GotMyLittleLamb great idea! Samantha Brick! Grin

lovetomoan · 27/06/2012 13:22

I will say 24601 next time they ask my name I'm a geek Blush

OAM2009 · 27/06/2012 13:37

TiggyD, ace clip! crying with laughter. (and my God, don't they look young and thin? like what I was once -sob-)

I didn't think this was anything new, I thought big, busy coffee chains have always done this. Altho I always end up stuttering as I get surprised by the request and feel I've done something naughty Blush

LoonyRationalist · 27/06/2012 13:59

Love the Fry & Laurie clip too TiggyD, I haven't seen that one before so thank-you :)

Latara · 27/06/2012 14:08

I don't mind at all - my nearest coffee shop is Starbucks so i know the staff there pretty well anyway. In fact they are really nice & often chat if we run into each other elsewhere. One of them has invited me to a walking group she has set up; i will go when i have time.
So they knew my name before the policy was brought in, & i made an effort to learn theirs because it's weird to chat to people regularly & not know their names.

Everyone is different though & i can see why some people wouldn't like giving their name.
