...to not want to say my name when ordering my coffee?

I'm not a miserable cow: if you work in a coffee shop I am happy to greet you, smile, say please & thank you. But I really really don't want to tell you my name, like I'm at a group therapy session. I am quite introverted & self-conscious and that kind of thing makes me want to run screaming.

Mind, I hate Starbucks so am unlikely to go in there but read about this policy in the paper & wondered what I'd do should the situation arise...

Ratboy? That is genius... Grin

Any other gems to share with us, lurking?

Barmcake · 26/06/2012 17:34

here in the middle east they give you a number it's written on your receipt and also on the cup (if taking away) makes it so much easier, not that I go in SB very often much prefer Costa Grin

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/06/2012 17:41

Actually I would enjoy shouting Ratboy at people.

But why can they not just give you a number and call that?

FrothyDragon · 26/06/2012 17:41

I prefer Costa. Alas, our nearest is 9 miles away, and involves venturing into enemy territory. :(

It's Starbucks, or £99.50 for a small tea in our local department store.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/06/2012 17:41

It's for when they are busy. I don't get asked if there are only a couple of people there, but any more than that, they want a name. and really, is it a big deal? Although the other day I got caught out when someone else had the same name and had the same order she was much younger and prettier sulk

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/06/2012 17:43

Why can't they give out numbers on a stick like everywhere else?

You can tell an American dreamt it up

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/06/2012 17:46

Enemy territory? In laws or football team?

AbsofAwesomeness · 26/06/2012 17:47

YANBU I also hate it. I do also think "I could make up a fake name" and the first that springs to mind is Fatima, and then I'm all "but I don't look like a Fatima, they'll know it's fake. What about Fanoula? Like HELL I look like a Fanoula. And it would be embarassing. ARGH why cna't I think of a fake name, I'm such a loser. Angela?" And then at this point I get to the till and I just use my real name anyway.

I need an advance fake name kept in reserve.

Nanny0gg · 26/06/2012 17:49

Being old, British and curmudgeonly, I hate it when someone young enough to be one of my dc and who I've never clapped eyes on before, wishes to call me by my first name.

Impertinence.

More like enemy towns, NoOne Grin Lot of "between town" rivalry

OK, will now be using the name "Ms Ann Thrope" for my next order. Although, doubt I look like an Ann...

EnjoyResponsibly · 26/06/2012 17:53

It's packed in our Starbucks and if I've waited for my coffee I don't want someone else snaffling it. Happy to give my name.

ThisOnce · 26/06/2012 17:54

I don't get what the problem is? Do you refuse when booking a restaurant table too?

Floggingmolly · 26/06/2012 17:56

Since when have they been demanding to know your name when you order coffee? Shock. I can't think of anything more cringeworthy Hmm
Whatever PR moron thought that one up should be sent for retraining ASAP.

missmiss · 26/06/2012 18:00

My name is unpronounceable if you're a forrin type. Booking restaurants and ordeeing takeaways is a nightmare. If I have to go to Starbucks, I'm called Sam.

I do know a guy who gives a different name every time, and keeps the cupsm. He has an album on FB devoted to them.

Pekka · 26/06/2012 18:04

It's annoying when you have a non-english name, written down by a person who has never heard it before, then served by another person who didn't even hear it in the first place, as they were not the person who wrote the name on the cup. They all have different accents of course, as do I. Luckily i drink hot chocolate, so usually there is no confusion, even if i don't recognise my own name at the end of the process.

bronze · 26/06/2012 18:06

I'm going to be Buck Star if I ever go in a Starbucks but I doubt I will. I'm not sure I ever have, I went in one of those chain ones once but it may have been another chain.
I posted on here asking about babyccinos afterwards. I'm so out of touch and I'm only 31

TheProvincialLady · 26/06/2012 18:08

"Mrs Mindyourownbusiness" is surely the answer of choice. We are not California.

Margerykemp · 26/06/2012 18:08

a great aunt is your grandmother's or grandfather' sister

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 26/06/2012 18:11

Don't think I don't know your REAL motive for wanting those 'gems' Frothy! I'm onto you! Grin

kazmus · 26/06/2012 18:13

Mike Hunt, they wo't ask again!!!

FrothyDragon · 26/06/2012 18:14

That said, knowing my luck, I'd use one of those 'gems' and get greeted with Shock "You're... The Frothy One, aren't you?"... Grin Would be just my luck...

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/06/2012 18:15

I heard about a Starbucks queue where when the third person in a row refused to give their name,.a voice from the back called "dont tell him pike!"
I will always give the name pike from now on

ivykaty44 · 26/06/2012 18:17

My dd2 went to a coffee shop last week where they wanted a name - she delighted in making up a really cool name and states she will think of a different cool name each time she goes.
