To find Miliband's today statement about "getting it wrong" outrageous

Absolutely infuriating! Eastern Europeans often do jobs that English people don't want because they involve night shifts e.g. the foodndustry or looking after the elderly.
Eastern Europeans are NOT on the same footing as British people when it comes to benefits so they can't even be said to be a "burden" on society. (before someone contradicts me on this I just want to say that I work in this field so I know a thing or two about benefits for foreign nationals).
It's a disgrace that Miliband felt the need to apologise for this.

If you are paying immigrants more than a British person would do the job for, and providing working conditions lower than a British person would accept, you are exploiting people, whether or not what you are doing is illegal. Plenty of jobs paid far more prior to mass immigration than they do now. While at the same time house prices have soared. Yet some people seem to think this is wonderful?

EdgarAllenPimms · 22/06/2012 21:52

What i called Gillian Duffy was more flattering than Gordon Browns appellation!

JosephineCD · 22/06/2012 21:53

Make that LESS than a British person would do the job for.

jaydenmummylovesyou · 22/06/2012 22:03

Pay back for the English -raping poorer nations for centuries. Now you want to throw your lazy dummies out of the pram?

Lazy buggers.

WhiteWidow · 22/06/2012 22:04

Lazy?!

You're obviously a wide up merchant and to be ignored

What a load of crap!

Yes, YABU, and I firmly believe that those who defends immigration as it is, is more than likely not in a minimum wage non skilled job and so are not affected to nearly the same degree. Its unskilled British people who are paying the price for high immigration.

Oblomov · 22/06/2012 22:19

Whitewwidow post is my thoughts exactly.
Making out that anyone who has immigration concerns is automaticaly a BNP racist, is a cheap shot.
I think people underestimate the effects of our 'open door policy'. What other country has been as 'open' as us?
saying that, loads of highly qualified british professionals go to work abroad. why? whya re they leaving? and we need lots of peole to come in and do highly skilled and not so skilled work. I have no probalem with that.
Plus, we need to addres this benefits culture that england has, of people being so 'lazy', that they stay on benefits all their life and moan about the 'poles coming in and taking their 'jobs'.
But SOME of our problems , as a nation now, do relate to our immigration issues of the last decade. anyone going to argue against that?

What do we do now? Well, clearly Miliband proposelals are so poxy they are ridiculous, but it does need tobe examined and atleast some laws/proceedures put into place quickly.

MangoHedgehog · 22/06/2012 22:19

Before the Eastern European influx, people used to say much the same thing about immigration from the Caribbean, and before then about the Irish.

The problem isn't economic migration, it's about proper enforcement of decent minimum pay and working conditions for everyone.

JosephineCD · 22/06/2012 22:22

We didn't have massive unemployment when the Irish and Caribbeans came over, they were brought over becasue there was a lack of workers. There has not been a lack of workers at any time in the past 30 years, so that excuse doesn't wash.

WhiteWidow · 22/06/2012 23:58

I love how the OP said in her er.. OP.. That basically no-one can contradict her because shes 'worked in the field' and 'knows a thing or two'. That's an actual LOL from me I'm afraid.

JosephineCD · 23/06/2012 00:01

I wonder if the OP has ever worked in A field?

tittytittyhanghang · 23/06/2012 00:06

I think foreign nationals can benefit the uk, but not on an open free for all basis. We have skill shortgages then fine, immigrants should be welcome. Otherwise not.

Southwest · 23/06/2012 00:14

it was electioneering from Milliband though wasnt it?

there must be something to the complaints though, there was no massive broccoli shortage or scandal with it rotting in the ground a few years ago so someone was doing the jobs. oh I forgot I have picked fruit and my brother did some factory thing with chickens many moons ago now

i have many friends who have benefitted from nannies and cleaners who were happy to work cash in hand

it is also worth pointing out that there are many other benefits in kind people are entitled too its not just all about cash, there is education, health, housing etc etc. just the excitement of living in London the consumerism being away from home loads of stuff
