....emails addresses?

Shoot me but XXX-Bitch_troll@etc and XXX-smokes-dope@etc goes straight in the shred pile.

If you are too stupid to set up a regular email account for job applications then you are too stupid to employ. I find it more frightening they could possibly be on a jury or vote.

schlumberger Your boss was a Lord?

Sorry, but I don't recognise that style and title.

It wouldn't have been allowed where I worked.

tryingtonotfeckup · 22/06/2012 14:29

My DH works for an 'Honourable', he's from Salford. It doesn't all work that way, he is very good at what he does. His directness is appreciated.

Schlumberger · 22/06/2012 14:36

Limited - member of the House of Lords. He was a Viscount. I didn't write that in case there was confusion with minty biscuits. I called him George.

limitedperiodonly · 22/06/2012 14:38

And Mayfair's full of hedge funds these days. Some of the people they let in are simply frightful - foreigners, Americans even, very vulgar. Some of them are even the wrong religion. You can tell by their last names - which you'd think would get them weeded out at CV stage.

Schlumberger · 22/06/2012 14:40

Sounds positively ghaaaaaastly. Grin

Pendeen · 22/06/2012 14:45

Schlumberger

"... and a CV from anyone with a dodgy name - Brandons, Kyles, Ethans, Jaydens etc were all rejected. ..."

Bit rough on some poor soul with a working class name but I don't see that as actually illegal. I would imagine that such an argument would only work with obvious ethnic names such as Patel (or Schlumberger).

PanickingIdiot · 22/06/2012 14:46

On the other hand, your outstanding cutlery skills and posh accent might get you a job in the Lloyds TSB call centre. If you went to the right university, that is.

PooPooInMyToes · 22/06/2012 14:48

Ethan?

DashingRedhead · 22/06/2012 14:51

Grin at confusion with minty biscuits...

BonnieBumble · 22/06/2012 14:58

Pendeem - those names are not associated with any race but I was pointing out that that type of recruitment practice is exposing the Company to potential claims. There may be other names that they also find unacceptable that are popular with certain racial groups.

What a shame that discrimination on the grounds of class isn't illegal.

Out of interest. Were there any other dodgy practices? Was it just the working class they weren't keen on or did they also try to filter out certain racial groups or other minorities?

Pendeen · 22/06/2012 15:04

BonnieBumble

I was being ironic about Schlumberger (in case you didn't spot that) but Patel certainly is.

fuzzpig · 22/06/2012 15:05

It's really sad if somebody works their ass off to get qualifications and/or experience only to fall at the last hurdle because of their name.

I really want a viscount biscuit now Envy - a penguin will have to do.

limitedperiodonly · 22/06/2012 15:11

You received CVs from people called Brandon, Kyle, Ethan and Jayden at a firm in England 20 years ago schlumberger?

Are you quite sure?

btw why didn't you say you worked for a peer? That would have have been the correct term and there'd have been no danger of comestible-based confusion?

limitedperiodonly · 22/06/2012 15:20

fuzzpig Me too. I'm going to change my entry to that biscuit thread.

Interesting penguin employer fact. About 15 years ago there was a scandal about drug taking in the Queen's Guard exposed when one young officer was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after hallucinating that he was a penguin.

I bet he's a captain of industry these days.

Xiaoxiong · 22/06/2012 15:25

V shocked by the prejudice against the name Ethan. It's a very venerable old money New England WASPy name in my experience - think Ethan Allen and Ethan Frome. Do people in the UK think it's a made up name!?

Anyway, discriminating against someone for something they didn't choose and can't readily change for a job application is quite sad and thank god bears no resemblance to my silver circle City firm.

Regional accents on the other hand can sometimes cause problems, mainly with non-English speaking clients. I have lived in the UK since 1999 and still have trouble understanding some very strong UK accents.

ByTheWay1 · 22/06/2012 15:33

There is old-Ethan and new-Ethan....... old Ethan has a sister called Phoebe or Persephone and loves cricket.... new Ethan has a sister called Ellie-May or Kayley and likes to play football...

PropositionJoe · 22/06/2012 15:37

Surely you know that the people on this board can distinguish between a member of the aristocracy and a biscuit ? Shock

lastnerve · 22/06/2012 15:38

I have a bit of an Hmm address but that's only because I made it at 16 and haven't been bothered to update Blush , not as bad as that though.

Pendeen · 22/06/2012 15:39

What may be considered good taste and upmarket in the US is often unrecognised and irrelevant in the UK.

Returntowork · 22/06/2012 15:40

I can't get interviews. My e-mail address is first name.surnamenumber@internet company. I would have thought that was OK but maybe I have the wrong sort of name. I already knew I had the wrong postcode but can't move until I get a better paid job. I'm never going to get a job am I? :( Should I be looking at changing my name? If so, to what?

Did I miss the answer to the question regarding how recruiters know they are viewing the Facebook profile of the candidate and not just someone with the same name?

StepOutOfSpring · 22/06/2012 15:48

YANBU. It's unprofessional.

lilypainter · 22/06/2012 15:55

I haven't spotted an answer to that question Returntowork

ByTheWay1 · 22/06/2012 16:01

Returntowork - recruiters do not know at first - but a couple of agencies I went to asked to be friended before they would consider taking anybody on to their books.

Hence the number of people with the "prettified" mum/dad/PTA/societies facebook page and the "raw" anything goes/games/photos/anyone who knows me facebook page.....

Anniegetyourgun · 22/06/2012 16:05

That's me buggered then. I don't do Facebook at all. 'Tis the work of the Devil, you know.

Returntowork · 22/06/2012 16:09

I just searched my RL name on FB if recruiters think some of them are me no wonder I don't get interviews. Not fair really these people are strangers who just happen to have the same name as me.
