....emails addresses?

Shoot me but XXX-Bitch_troll@etc and XXX-smokes-dope@etc goes straight in the shred pile.

If you are too stupid to set up a regular email account for job applications then you are too stupid to employ. I find it more frightening they could possibly be on a jury or vote.

You are right there.
Can't imagine a judge being impressed with 'well cos we want to have squizz you honour' Grin

But in some cases it wouldn't cover you and I think joining a governmental department would be one of them.

I am not the high flying type so unlikely to affect me although I never post about work on FB. I amazed at how many people do.

I have a weird name, a weird accent, went to a weird uni and almost certainly don't live in the "right" postcode. Did I mention I'm an immigrant from a country most people here can't place on the map.
I'm beating recruiters away with a stick

I hate posts like these - I need want to know the details!

I would think that in most cases your right to a private and family life, home and correspondence as protected by the Human Rights Act would prevent an employer being able to demand that you provide your password to a FB account. Although as others have said it is a limited right, it is only limited in the sense that it is balanced against specific aims such as the prevention of crime and disorder, and the economic well being of the country. Your employer would have to have specific information or suspicions that you were using fb to commit an offence, and wouldn't be able to have a blanket policy or go on a fishing trip.

Most employers will not ask for your facebook password, though increasingly some are asking to be "friended" which is different.... so folks looking for work are increasingly having a squeaky clean - and of course active (employers aren't daft)- account as well as the anything goes friends account..

Some employers also ask the "will you friend us on your facebook account?" question with NO intention of getting you to do so - merely to see if the look you give is abject horror, or ok.... you can tell a lot at interview by asking questions that take people outside their comfort zone....

There was a letter in todays Sun magazine asking about the FB thing, (I dont read it! Well, I might glance through it if there is one in the house.......Wink)

The letter didnt indicate that the job was particularly sensitive, but that the boss had asked twice now. The advice was that it wasnt ok, it goes against FB T&Cs and if the boss continues to push for it then the person should go to HR. Presumably if they says its company policy then ACAS would be the next step.

Crikey!!! YANBU!

Re the whole Facebook thing, my response would be 'I keep FB for my friends, but I'm on LinkedIn and will happily confirm contact on there'. I understand why lurking says she would, though I still think it's a fairly bad idea, but when I was looking for work last year all the recruiters used LinkedIn and Twitter.

And even with 20 years in the workplace, you really can get your CV down to one page if you try hard enough! Name and contact details in the header. Summarised professional quals and education. Progressively less detail required as you go further back in time unless one particular role gave you relevant experience for what you're applying for.

stealthpenguin · 25/06/2012 15:43

YANBU. I don't understand it. When you get to a certain age you go "Hang on, not good..."

I've gone through e-mail addresses like pants in the past. It used to be "cool" to have an up-to-date e-mail address, so I had so many, the stupidest of them being [email protected].

I now have three e-mail addresses, the rest have been discontinued and cancelled. One is my personal account, one is my professional account and one is for the Charity of which I'm secretary.

I also don't understand what the fascination is with posting everything on Facebook. I have my friends' to a minimum, I don't accept people who I don't immediately know, my privacy settings are the tightest possible and I spend a full week purging every single previous update that could be even slightly misconstrued or offensive. People need to realize that it's so unprofessional.

And my CV is one page! Mwahaha!
