AIBU to think that having a 10 month old in a sling is a bit dangerous?

My friend wears her baby she also has a ds aged 5 who is handful. Today we all walked back from school, baby head butting friend as was tired or hungry. Elder child drove at mum on scooter twice. Would I be a big old whinge pants to suggest that time for baby to go in the buggy? It scared the shit out of me. He is a big baby too and can wriggle out of the sling thing with ease. He doesn't look very comfortable either.
What would you do

I wore DD in a sling until she was 2. why would it be any more dangerous than having them in a buggy? In fact in a buggy it is much easier for them to launch themselves out / get run over by scooters / hit by balls / attacked by dogs / you name it

If he's not happy in the sling then that's another matter, but if the kid is happy and the mum is happy I don't understand what the problem is

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 21/06/2012 18:01

Er, yes, YABU.

bumbleymummy · 21/06/2012 18:02

Sorry but I think you should mine your own. I used slings for years. I'm not actually even sure what you're concerned about wrt a 10 mo in a sling anyway. As long as she's using a suitable sling and wearing it properly then it's fine.

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 18:02

I'd mind my own business and let the mum get on with it.

A 10 month old baby in a sling scared you?

Personally the thought of a 5yr old riding a scooter in the street when the Mum clearly can't run after him, scares me more.

curiositykitten · 21/06/2012 18:04

Oh Jesus Christ.

BarredfromhavingStella · 21/06/2012 18:04

YABU, I take my 9 month old in his Baby Bjorn with no problems-can't imagine the size difference is vast.

zippey · 21/06/2012 18:05

I carry my one year old (almost) in a sling. Its good.

Posterofapombear · 21/06/2012 18:05

You are more than welcome to try to put my 12month old DD in a buggy rather then her sling if you like. I would invest in ear protecters first though Grin

But seriously though mind your own.

camdancer · 21/06/2012 18:06

DD2 is 12 months. Sometimes she goes in the sling, sometimes she goes in the buggy. It depends on so many different things (how I'm feeling, how she is feeling, if DD1 or DS want to go in the buggy, if I've done too much shopping, if the buggy has a flat ...) I'm sure if your friend has a problem with her baby being in the sling she'll get out the buggy.

HappyJustToBe · 21/06/2012 18:07

YABU.

BertieBotts · 21/06/2012 18:07

A lot of slings are designed to carry babies safely until much older than 10 months!

Also I agree with others - when they're on you you are aware of them and you can feel if they are slipping out or if they are secure.

YABU.

otchayaniye · 21/06/2012 18:07

i once carried youngest on front and three year old on back (i am tiny) and looked like a wally, but it wasn't what i'd call dangerous.

4lizardsandababy · 21/06/2012 18:08

it does depend on the type of sling but worn correctly a child in a sling is safe IMO. I still have my 15kg 2yr old in a sling if he is asleep and I don't want to take the pushchair. Saves my arms from aching and means my hands are free for whatever i'm doing and he always looks comfortable and sleeps well. I've got a mei tai which is meant for older children though, 10m is prob a bit big to be in a wrap sling. So YABU if she is using the appropriate sling for his age/weight!

otchayaniye · 21/06/2012 18:09

wrap sling if woven is fine for all ages. stretchy less so

LST · 21/06/2012 18:10

I take my 7.5mo out in his and he's 24lb so the size of a small elephant Grin

Magneto · 21/06/2012 18:10

Ds is nearly two and still goes out in various slings with me. YABU.

EdgarAllenPimms · 21/06/2012 18:10

i sling carried my 22 monther today. it is safer than my backpack, because she can't climb out (as she has tried once on the school run to the shock of passers by)

mei tai a good sling for an older baby.

at 10 months backpack would probably contain them quite well.

in actual fact i find sling/ other child easier than pushchair/ other child as your hands are free.

MousyMouse · 21/06/2012 18:11

yab very u
I still occasionally carry my dc who is 2.6!

LittleWaveyLines · 21/06/2012 18:11

YABU probably - but it depends on the sling.

At 4 months DD could get out of her stretchy wrap scarily easily - so I always carried her on my front so she was perfectly safe.

I also think that commercial type carriers like baby bjorn are incredibly uncomfortable for the wearer when they are more than about 10lb, and also uncomfortable for the baby - so if she's using one of these then YA(n)BU, but she needs to swap to a different carrier, not stop carrying her!

I soon changed to a woven wrap or mei tai and now carry her all the time on my back. She's almost 12 months and loves it, and is totally safe.
She is now starting to grab a wrap and try to climb up my back when she wants to be up in the sling. I intend to carry her until she's probably 3 or 4! :)

lolaflores · 21/06/2012 18:12

The baby was head butting mother, she was not in any way aware of what 5 year old was doing and he rode into her twice as the baby was wriggling out of the sling. Further to which she was carrying two bags in one hand. I was concerned about the 5 year old knocking both of them over. She didn't look like she had either of them in hand.
On the advice above I shall refrain from saying anything, but it looked like an accident in the making.
Sorry

My DS is 20yrs old and 6ft 2"

I still carry him in a sling sometimes.

lolaflores · 21/06/2012 18:13

She has a fabric sling. is very competent with it but not being able to ward off DS1 looks a bit scarey to me.
