My friends (from t'countryside) all believe in saluting lone magpies...
(That old rhyme when you see magpies - 1 for Sorrow, 2 for Joy etc etc). They are VERY serious about it.

(Magpies are birds. They are cute because they are birds. If one is on it's own then that's because it a) wants to be; b) wants to get to any food before the other magpies see it; c) is waiting for it's Magpie mates..)

Also it's significant if a white feather falls out of the sky next to you when there is no bird up there - it is a message from an Angel.

(Nothing at all to do with the fact that birds fly fast; yet feathers that fall off the speedy birds from up high in the sky do float quite slowly...)

My friends are very intelligent & logical in all other ways (except for the old superstitious beliefs).

ah, but do you feel big when you consider the smallness of an atom? My work is modelling molecules - units Angstrom, that'ts 0.1 nanometres. So when I look at the universe I feel nicely mid-sized

The universe is awesome whether you're peering into the detail or out at its expanse. Know what, a big smile is spreading over my face as I type this!
