To think that "fanny" is not an offensive name for female genitalia ?

My ex was taken aside by our 3.5 yr old daughter's nursery key worker today, and told that they didn't like her using the word fanny, and that she should use the word noony instead?!

Is there a difference in offensiveness levels between these 2 names? Always thought that fanny was just a harmless kids name for vagina/vulva whatever, am I wrong?

I thought this was about the fanny irn bru advert.

JennyPiccolo · 22/06/2012 16:50

I live in Glasgow and no old men have ever asked to look at my fanny.Sad

ComposHat · 22/06/2012 16:53

Have you really heard that Compos? I never have and I lived in Glasgow for 5/6 years

Yep, a particularly foul mouthed former colleague of mine used it. The Big Man from chewin the fat used it too. Which thinking about it may have been where she got it from.

NowThenWreck · 22/06/2012 16:54

Ah, well, I wouldn't understand what that meant anyway yellowraincoat!

I am a bit ashamed that when ds first pointed at me when I was getting changed and said "whats that?" I said "my Ladybits"

I couldn't come up with a word on the spot, which seems pretty mental, as others have said, that we can't even agree on a non-sexual, inoffensive, informal name for the genitals of half the population.

So, yeah, I am up for re-claiming Fanny, because it is a direct equivalent.

MissusTulip · 22/06/2012 17:20

Erm, noonie is my husband. True fact. He couldn't say his name right as a nipper and came up with this as his new name.

He had been a bit surprised to learn he is actually a lady garden female genitalia. Indeed so was I...

MissusTulip · 22/06/2012 17:34

He's also rather sad at the pasting he's getting on here eg noony is awful. Poor noonie Sad

giggly · 22/06/2012 17:55

I think regional variations are great. Would love to see a teacher face if a dc spoke about her fanny in GlasgowGrin
Never ever would a Glasgow mother refer to her "lady" as a fanny. Her dh/boss/crap colleague maybe but not her child.
In fact she would be a fany if she did.

I can't for the life of me understand why you would not teach a child the correct word for their own body parts. What is 'weird' about a young child saying vulva or vagina? They have one, so do you, what genuinely is the issue?

I think "vulva" or "vagina" sounds bizarre coming from a toddler.

Does anyone get their child to say "anus"? thought not. I am a doctor and am driven potty by the bizarre euphemisms people use; "millie" and "tail" being particular bugbears of mine. I do think we struggle though as "willy" is totally acceptable, clear and something almost anyone would recognise as a slang/lay term for penis wheras there is no accepted (or acceptable) alternative for girls. My DD came up with "wee wee bottom" and "poo poo bottom" herself (at 2yr 9m) and they work well for us at the moment. I would NEVER EVER accept the word "fanny" as when I was growing up this word was on a par with c and t

Krumbum · 23/06/2012 20:47

But WHY do you find it bizarre?
Yes the words penis and anus are fine too. Nothing wrong with a child knowing their own body parts.

FannyFifer · 23/06/2012 21:08

Ha ha no way would I get my dd to call her vulva her fanny. It's rude.

FannyFifer · 23/06/2012 21:08
Hownoobrooncoo · 23/06/2012 21:10

Don't really like fanny, brings back to many memories of horrible little neds sniggering and shouting 'show us yur fanny' as you walked past them. It certainly wasn't a term of endearment and was equal to pussy or beaver.

Goofymum · 23/06/2012 21:24

I think fanny is a vulgar slang word. On a par with a toddler saying cock or prick. The nursery were not being unreasonable to say they didn't like her using the word but unfortunately they came up with a silly alternative.

I don't know why but I also find toddlers using the words vagina etc odd, a bit too adult Confused My DDs use the term 'bits and bobs' and that is fine with us.

NowThenWreck · 23/06/2012 21:31

No-one has a problem with "willy" though, so they?
And Fanny is the direct opposite to Willy.
Maybe, as a society, we have a bit of a problem with naming female genitalia at all.
Do you call your son's genitals his "bits n' bobs?"

NowThenWreck · 23/06/2012 21:32

"do they" I mean.

Goofymum · 23/06/2012 21:36

If I had a son I would probably use the term willy. I don't think it's the direct opposite of fanny. I think willy is acceptable. The issue is that there isn't a female equivalent. My parents used to use the term 'winkle' for female bits and that makes me cringe now.

gobbledegook1 · 23/06/2012 21:46

I called it a 'Miffy' when little. I now call it a fanny generally speaking but when discussing it with DSD (11) I call it 'Lady Bits'.

Ref willy's: Eldest DS calls it a 'Winkle', Youngest DS calls it a 'Titchy'.

dementedma · 23/06/2012 22:07

definitely would find "fanny" an unacceptable term for a young child to use, in the same way wouldn't want my DS to refer to his "cock". Not appropriate at all here.

SoSoMamanBebe · 23/06/2012 22:23

Surely Vage or Pussy are like cock. I like fanny as it's not all coy and girly. The other alternatives on here all sound like they are said giggling by itty bitty girlies.

early80sgirl · 23/06/2012 22:31

my dds always refered to theirs as their front bottoms , i know it sounds a bit silly but think its very inoffensive .

MariaCallous · 23/06/2012 22:40

We started DD of with bum-bum and she has widened it to front and back bum-bum. I know it's naff and will address it sometime, she's 3. DS has a pee-pee, bum-bum and his testicles are bo's (as in bojangles). He's just 1 and totally non-verbal with one expressive finger and a penchant fit grabbing all bits and yanking.

MrsLetch · 23/06/2012 22:40

My dh says he considers 'fanny' to be the equivalent of 'dick'. Not as offensive as cock, but certainly not the equivalent of willy, and not something you'd want a preschooler saying. I think I probably agree with him.
