To think I can lose one stone

In the next three weeks - if I try really hard?

Holiday looms and I am grossly overweight - heaviest I've ever been - comfort eating due to family stuff

I want to be so over that now - focus on losing a little bit of weight for the holiday - as a kick start if you like.

Just need some virtual moral support - is this a reasonable goal or way too ambitious?

Depends how much overweight you are. On the biggest loser someone lost 13lbs in one week. When I started WW i lost 6lb the first week, but then only 2lb a week thereafter. Generally I would say it was a bit ambitious but you can only try x Anyways, i also need to lose a stone or two so i'll join you in your pursuit (starting tomorrow because i just had a fish supper from the chippie!)

PowderPuffAndCurlyWhiskers · 17/06/2012 17:49

A stone is a big ask. How much do you have to lose? There's no sense in starving yourself for 3 weeks to lose a stone, and then regaining it all the minute you start eating normally (plus more on holiday) again.

Just follow a sensible plan, exercise, and it'll come off at a safe and healthy rate.

StuntGirl · 17/06/2012 17:50

Too ambitious in the general scheme of things, 1lb a week is generally a sensible goal, although you could find you drop a lot of water weight in the beginning.

I had absolutely no water weight losses and it took me 4 weeks to even lose 1lb when I started dieting, yet I know others who have lost anything between 5 and 12lbs in the first few weeks. Change to a healthier diet anyway and feel the benefit alll year round, not just for your holiday.

BIWItheBold · 17/06/2012 17:52

To be honest it's very unlikely, although not totally impossible. How much do you weigh? The more you weigh, the more you're likely to lose. In my Bootcamp (search for the threads) one of the posters lost 13lbs in two weeks.

It also depends how you plan to lose weight, and then what you're going to do at the end of the three weeks. If you just then go into holiday mode and eat/drink whatever you want, you'll put it all back on!

FutTheShuckUp · 17/06/2012 17:54

I want to lose a similar amount in a similar time scale. It IS possible but is a challenge. We could buddy up?

PatheticTrumpet · 17/06/2012 17:56

I'll buddy up for sure - lets make an action plan - post our menu for tomorrow and our target for exercise

Well im on nights tonight so my diet looks a bit odd to the onlooker- just got up and have had weetabix. Will later have ham salad pitta bread and yoghurt and then a weight watchers meal

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 18:02

Could you swap comfort eating for comfort exercising? Treat yourself to dance classes, swimming, personal training sessions? Find a friend to go with, i hate exercising alone but quite enjoy it in company

3lb is a healthy amount to lose in a week, so 9lb total is a very realistic target and not too far off what you want :)

StuntGirl · 17/06/2012 18:04

3lb per week isn't healthy or sustainable Hmm

CakeMeIAmYours · 17/06/2012 18:05

It is do-able, but will be painful.

I've lost 11lbs since the Jubilee weekend (so less than 2 weeks). It isn't fun to be honest, but I'm already back in my 'thin' clothes which is the best feeling ever - I was on the verge of having to buy a new wardrobe Sad

Lo-carb all the way - BIWI talks a lot of sense Smile

ErikNorseman · 17/06/2012 18:06

A stone? Highly unlikely. Half a stone is certainly doable.

ErikNorseman · 17/06/2012 18:06

3lb a week means creating a deficit of 1500 calories a day! Not healthy in the least.

PoppyWearer · 17/06/2012 18:08

It's definitely do-able if you're strict. I lost a stone in January, in preparation for a big family event. If you have the right incentive you can do it!

My tip is to have a decent breakfast, your main cooked meal at lunch time and then soup for dinner.

If you must have a drink in the evening, make it a gin and (slim) tonic.

Shiftinglard · 17/06/2012 18:20

I have lost a stone in 20 days on MFP. I am eating 1200 cals a day, I felt hungry the first 2/3 days but seem to have got over that. I am very heavy and need to lose 4 stone in total. I have been doing exercise daily, bike riding and walking. I definitely feel better in myself and I was only aiming for 2lb/week so to lose a stone was quite surprising. I am sure it will slow down but exercise is def the key.

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 18:21

You can create a deficit by increasing exercise as well as cutting down intake Hmm

6-8lb is likely to be excess water, which is why fad diets appear to work for the first week or two.

Strict dukan for 3 weeks with no cheating = 1 stone, although half of it will be water.

harrietlichman · 17/06/2012 18:47

Not realistically do-able, IMHO. If you are very, very strict you could lose 4 - 5 lb in week 1 but then your weight loss will slow down to 1/2lb a week from then on, and this is if you are on a very tight rein, calorie wise.
Why do you feel the need to lose this much weight in such a short time frame? If you know you need to lose weight you need to adopt a different way of eating which is long term and is sustainable - short term crash diets really don't work (and I speak as one who has tried a few) A long term approach to dealing with your issues with food is what is necessary to achieve manageable weight loss, and this involves calorie control and exercise. Do you think losing a stone before your holiday is going to make you enjoy your holiday more?

janelikesjam · 17/06/2012 19:08

How about a more realistic and comfortable goal? Very fast weight loss is mostly water (and possibly muscle), which is pointless and dubious. I know its tempting but it has alot of downsides and is v hard to achieve. Losing 1 stone in 3 weeks is virtually impossibly anyway, unless you are morbidly obese.

How about thinking about a longer term goal i.e. between now and later in the year, and just incorporate the holiday as somewhere along the way. Accept the weight gain you experienced due to stress/comfort eating, but realise you are now more back in control and really starting to look after yourself. I am sure you will soon see the results you want.

Meanwhile, you could go to the butcher and ask for a pound of fat - you will be surprised how much it is. To lose 1 lb in fat a week is really good going in my book.

GinevraMollyWeasley · 17/06/2012 19:12

It is entirely possible to gain a stone in three weeks- I've just managed that one with extreme stress-eating. I'm trying to lose as much as possible in the next two weeks, before a wedding. I lost a stone in January, and altogether this year lost almost 4st then gained when I lost my job. That was on a VLCD though, not for everyone, I still have sooo much left to lose but it's not recommended for those with only a little to lose. I'm back on the VLCD today so I hope to be 7lbs down for the wedding.

lattelov3r · 17/06/2012 19:14

if your already pretty large then its doable pretty easily if your only a little overweight then its going to be gruelling and probably unlikely

HildaOgden · 17/06/2012 19:14

If you're very overweight, losing 14 lbs isnt going to make much difference to how you look in comparison to losing say,6 pounds.6 lbs is acheivable, healthy and sustainable,in my opinion.

catgirl1976 · 17/06/2012 20:49

Dukan diet will do it if you can stick to it (if you do the attack phase for the full 3 weeks if will drop off but its not easy)

StepOutOfSpring · 17/06/2012 20:57

Go for half a stone :)
