To expect to be able to actually EAT the fruit and veg from Aldi?

Does anyone else find the fruit and veg from Aldi is becoming increasingly poor quality? I have been a long-time shopper there but am getting more and more fed up of opening bags/plastic boxes of fruit and having to bin half of it - this week, strawberries, peaches and tomatoes have all had to thrown straight on the compost heap due to being mouldy - or make a ten mile round trip to return them (the store is closer to work than home) I know it's cheap but it should be fit for purpose.

it is warm weather (even if it is raining) so you should open plastic bags and boxes and put the fruit in a cool dry dark place, and it will last a lot longer.

fryingpantoface · 17/06/2012 13:34

I agree. We only buy veg we are actually gonna eat that day from aldi

Hexenbiest · 17/06/2012 13:45

IME you have to be very very careful what you pick up fruit wise at least and then still might find odd bits have to be thrown away immediately and eaten quickly - that with cool dark storage and even storing in the fridge.

Fruit doesn't last long round my DC - but yes it isn't good.

YANBU

I just check it before I buy and take it out of the packaging as soon as we get it home. We haven't had any problems.

harrietlichman · 17/06/2012 13:52

I am so annoyed by it - this week, for example, I shopped on Thursday, opened the peaches as soon as I go in and out of the four in the pack, the bottom two were rotten (not visible until opened as it was the inside bit, IYSWIM. The strawberries came in one of those plastic punnet things and again, once opened (on Saturday) the middle ones were totally mouldy and of course all of those around them had gone off too, same with the tomatoes. I honestly don't think it would make much difference how I stored them, squeaky as they were obviously mouldy in the store (I keep them in the fridge once home) - I bet if I'd bought them from Tesco, Sainsbury's or whatever they'd have been ok.
I really do like Aldi's stuff generally, and find it great value for money overall, just finding the fruit and veg really rubbish.

I had strawberries delivered from Tesco on Friday and they were mouldy when I opened them yesterday.

Last week I bought some nectarines in the Co-Op and there was a mouldy one in
The bottom.

I think you can get bad fruit and veg anywhere, unfortunately!

BabylannShallFall · 17/06/2012 13:56

This happens to us from time to time, it seems to happen in waves. I don't think they replenish their stock often enough. We have had it with meat a couple of times too, chicken breasts and sausages.A couple of times we've accidentally bought out of date produce because they didn't label it as such and it was in the same place as the not out of date produce.

harrietlichman · 17/06/2012 14:01

Maybe you're right - it can happen anywhere - it just seems I have had a run of it lately and throwing food away drives me nuts!
Someone told me that the reason they can sell it so cheap is because they buy it wholesale nearer to the sell by date than other chains, which is why it goes off. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and a few more weeks before I switch my allegiance to another supermarket!

We don't have an Aldi, but we do have a Lidl. They've always been fine - so far.

Asda stuff was crap ime.

LovelyMayoMammy · 17/06/2012 14:13

I mainly shop in Aldi, but often in Tesco too, depending on what I've got on in the week. I think it is just as likely to happen with Tesco produce as with Aldi tbh, its certainly not just Aldi.

ErikNorseman · 17/06/2012 16:30

My aldi is fine. Always the occasional thing that rots in a course of days but as they don't use sell by dates I check everything before I buy.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 17/06/2012 16:49

YANBU... I know their buying strategy and, in a nutshell, it's the cheapest crap they can lay hands on without being actually illegal. Occasionally it's OK but it's never going to last very long.

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 17/06/2012 16:59

I know what you mean but if you check the 4 digit date code on the label you can see which is the newest stock. Eg 2403 means week 24, day 03 (Wednesay). So Day 01 = Monday, 02= Tuesday etc. Anything left over from week 23 would be old stock so best avoided.

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 17/06/2012 17:01

yanbu no point buying cheapo stuff if you need to bn it

SCOTCHandWRY · 17/06/2012 17:08

NOTANIPHONE,

Day 01 =Sunday surely?, day 07 = Sat? Smile

But I get your point about the code, love Aldi but hate the attempt to obscure what is the freshest fruit and veg!

Humidity rather than temp is the problem at the moment - damp air prompts mould and these stores don't aircondition or refrigerate the veg shelves.

lilyliz · 17/06/2012 19:15

I do a lot of shopping at Lidl and the fruit is usually rock hard then before it can ripen it goes off.I now buy fruit and veg at the local greengrocer.I now buy fruit and veg at the local greengrocer,it supports a local business and they are very good at doing things like halving cabbage and lettuce as a whole one is too much as I live alone.

smoggii · 17/06/2012 19:21

Aldi stuff is usually good, much better than Asda, not as good as sainsbury's though but then it is half the price and Tesco is hit and miss

pantaloons · 17/06/2012 19:26

We gave up with Aldi for this reason. There seems little point saving £2 if you then end up binning half the stuff and spending more going elsewhere. I've gone back to Morrisons, I think their veg is well priced and keeps for ages.

MrsHelsBels74 · 17/06/2012 19:28

It seems to me fruit & veg from most supermarkets is poorer quality these days...or maybe I'm more fussy!

MarySA · 17/06/2012 19:30

I agree Morrisons fruit and veg is very good quality and reasonably priced. But Tesco's is the nearest to us. And I often find the fruit and veg awful.

madmomma · 17/06/2012 19:47

Ooh cogito are you 'in the know'? How exciting! Spill some more!

ilovesooty · 17/06/2012 19:50

I find my Aldi fruit and veg keeps for ages.

Roses12s · 17/06/2012 19:57

Just today I bought and opened a bag of Aldi carrots to find they were mushy!

cardibach · 17/06/2012 20:01

My Aldi fruit and veg generally lastsd for ages, too, ilovesooty. It is often more tasty than the equivalent from Tesco - although Tesco does have better stuff available. You have to remember that Aldi stuff is equivalent to Tesco Value. I haven't had anything go off that I haveused within the week, though, and i wouldn't expect it to last longer.

BackforGood · 17/06/2012 20:03

I never have any more problem with my Aldi stuff than stuff from anywhere else - there can always be a problem, but generally I find their stuff great (particularly the Super Six Smile).
