Hi there - just wanted to see if anyone had tried the Tesco Every Day Value range of baby products and if they were any good? The baby bath, lotion and shampoo range from 9-11p - AIBU to buy these for my newborn? My husband says yes but compared to branded products, how different can they be? I have bought one of each to test on me but just wanted to see what opinions were and if anyone had tried them? Thanks very much!

A newborn doesn't need all that stuff. Warm water and cotton wool is perfectly fine for cleaning. Much better than chemically filled crap.

MegBusset · 16/06/2012 21:53

Newborns don't need baby bath, lotion or shampoo at all. In fact it can be very drying for their skin. There, just saved you 27p :)

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 16/06/2012 21:54

weel, the midwife told me that johnsons stuff can be a bit harsh for newborns.

FootprintsOfTheQueen · 16/06/2012 21:55

Water for the first month. Bounty pack freebies last the second month. Then 9p stuff is fine.

ShullBit · 16/06/2012 21:57

A newborn baby doesn't need that stuff. It can dry their skin. Cotton wool and water is sufficient enough.

Sl1nkyMalinki · 16/06/2012 22:00

Water for the first month, then a drop of olive oil in the water thereafter :) (or until baby grows out of the sink / baby bath and it becomes a little more dangerous!).

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 16/06/2012 22:03

Agree with above. Just warm water and cotton is fine.

5madthings · 16/06/2012 22:04

never bothered with baby bath stuff, just water is fine for little ones :)

McHappyPants2012 · 16/06/2012 22:07

NB don't need anything in the bath

rubberducky24 · 16/06/2012 22:08

thanks everyone! I'll stick to water and use the baby products on me!

Yep - stick to water! My eldest is 2.5 and I have about 8 bottles of stuff I'll never use, mostly from gifts. About 3 of baby-oil - never used it. Some of talc - no longer advised to use. The rest we're working our way through very slowly, but when ds2 got rashy we went back to just aqueous cream, nothing or specialist stuff. Seriously, the amount you use, a bottle lasts forever - we've only got through 2 bottles of Johnsons Top-to-Toe (which is very mild) in 2.5 yrs....

PrisonerOfWaugh · 16/06/2012 22:13

We're still trying to use up a bottle of Johnsons stuff given in a Bounty pack, and DD was born 5 years ago!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 16/06/2012 22:17

I agree, I got rid of loads of J&J baby products on FreeCycle as we never used them. I did use the J&J Top to Toe wash from DD being a few weeks old to about 2yo. Now we have baby bubble bath, but use a tiny amount. I've just replaced the last J&J with a Sainbury's value bottle Blush The only thing we buy is the L'oreal kids shampoo and conditioner - DD has masses of curly hair!!

vanimal · 16/06/2012 22:25

Tesco fragrance-free wipes are just 36p a pack and are fab. I stock up whenever they have them in stock, and have been known to buy a box-full at a time.

I haven't tried their other products, but I did use all Asda own-brand baby products for my DDs.

As long as you don't have a history of skin problems, eg dry skin or ezcema in either family, I would give them a try.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 16/06/2012 22:26

When ds was newborn I didn't use any products on him, just water. I only started using wipes when he was 12 weeks old.

Gentleness · 16/06/2012 22:26

I thought of freecycling the baby-oil but someone (I don't know very well at all) once said to me, "I'll have it!" and gave a seedy wink and since then I can't face handing it over to a stranger!

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 16/06/2012 22:28

yuk, use the baby oil on your own skin!

bogeyface · 16/06/2012 22:29

DD was one a couple of weeks ago and I have only just finished using the sample sized bottle of baby shampoo, and she had a full head of curls from the day she was born! You use such tiny amounts that it lasts forever!

LST · 16/06/2012 22:31

I used johnsons from birth with my DS as he had realty terrible reflux and water wasn't enough. The only reason I used (and still am using) johnsons is because we had tonnes of it as gifts. When I need to bury some I'll buy the cheaper versions I think.

Btw he's never had any problems with his skin or cradle cap.

HTH

bogeyface · 16/06/2012 22:31

One gripe I do have is that the J&J conditioner (which we do need for DD due to her curls) smells different to the shampoo, and baby shampoo is the smell of babyhood for me!

LST · 16/06/2012 22:32

Ok... First typo was meant to be really not realty and the second was meant to be buy not bury Confused

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 16/06/2012 22:33

Water and olive oil is all I've used on my ds. He was very overdue and shed his skin like a snake Shock so the olive oil helped soothe and smooth the cracked skin, and since then he's been flaky and dry. Add a couple of drops of lavender or chamomile, but baby products are a bit of a waste of money imo.
Having said that, I'm happy to use morrisons cheapy wipes on him, but johnsons are a no no here after I used them to wipe make up from my eyes and had the most hideous reaction.

TheSkiingGardener · 16/06/2012 22:34

Agree with all the above. When you do start using wipes then beat in mind that some babies can be allergic to some things in some wipes. My DS got an all over rash from Tescos value wipes. Other value wipes are fine though.

Meglet · 16/06/2012 22:34

The cheap wipes are good once they are weaned and you're cleaning gunk off them 3 times a day. The dc's are 5 & 3 now but I still always have a pack of the cheap sainsburys wipes in the kitchen. I always used the nice (well, sainsburys own frangrance free) wipes on them as babies.

I certainly didn't use lotions and potions on them when they were young. They hardly had any hair until about 18 months so it saved a fortune on shampoo.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2012 22:37

I use Tesco value baby wipes for cleaning the floor. They do make my hands sore, and I have the delicate skin of a rhino hide. I woukdnt use them on my own face / bum, sorry. In fact once this pack has gone I won't be getting more, they're not even that good for cleaning!
