for thinking DS was lying dead in house

This morning I went out as usual. DH works from home so he was in before I left.

Usually before he leaves he has his routine he takes the key out of the front door from the inside (so that no-one can get in overnight). Anyway, our cleaning lady pitched up while I was out with the kids asking me to come home - she can't get in she says they key is in the door on the other side. I came home with the children and told her to go and get herself a coffee while I tried to get in touch with DH. Spent an hour trying to call him and no answer.

Then I thought maybe he is at the gyms (where he usually goes to unwind) - called: no he is not there; maybe he has gone food shopping - not there either - still no trace of him. Then my mind starts wondering - what if he is in the house and something has happened to him (who knows he could have fallen down stairs / had heart attack). He is usually so predictable I can set my watch by him - so by now I have visions on my head. So I called the police - I was sort of expecting they might appeal to my rational self and say he will probably be okay but they said it sounded worrying they would send a police car.

Next thing I know there are 4 police outside my house threatening to break the door down.

They manage to climb over neighbour's fence. As soon as they do this DH calls and says "AliGrylls I got your messages. Is everything alright". The police were lovely and said it was not a waste of time and at least he is alright.

However, It has left me feeling like a twat and wondering if I over-reacted. And more to the point I can't believe I have posted this shameful experience on mumsnet.

He was intending to get back in the front door? Does that mean he was locked out too? How did you all get in?

Bloody treadmills that is why I stay clear !! All sorts of nonsense occurs

diddl · 15/06/2012 22:23

How does leaving a key in the lock overnight prevent people getting in?

I know you can´t get in with a key-but how does it prevent burglars (if that´s the idea)?

Lilyloo · 15/06/2012 22:25

So when you called the gym and they said he wasn't there, that wasn't true???

JoanOfNark · 15/06/2012 22:28

You called the police because you couldn't get your husband on his mobile for a couple of hours?

Shock
imnotmymum · 15/06/2012 22:30

OOOOOPPPPPPPOOOPPPPPPOOOPPP,!!! Euston we have a problem!!!

MrsHelsBels74 · 15/06/2012 22:32

But how was he going to get back in if his key was in the front door on the inside? If you couldn't get in with it there how could he? How did anyone get in?Confused

imnotmymum · 15/06/2012 22:35

I refuse to go to bed until I know what the hell HE WAS DOING !!!!!!!

vigglewiggle · 15/06/2012 22:37

He was in the gym. But I'm still confused about how you all got back in.

OfCourseImAlwaysRight · 15/06/2012 22:39

is he the man from the arnie films, who melted into a silver puddle, went under the door and morphed back into a man??? :)

2rebecca · 15/06/2012 22:41

Is there a back door you could have tried? If he was only on the treadmill then you don't seem to have tried getting in the house for long before phoning the police as people aren't usually on the treadmill for hours. Did you actually return home and check the house out yourself or just ring from work without going to the house first yourself.
It does sound like an over reaction when all he did was leave the key in the lock which seems an easy thing to do to me.

weatherrain · 15/06/2012 22:47

Of course it's an over-reaction to call the police after just ONE hour of a person not being contactable Hmm. Can't believe some of the other posts, you people are like my father.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2012 22:55

Do you mean dh not ds? Ans yes how did u get in if his key was in the front?
(we have a similar set up Amd something like this is a nightmare of mine!)

AliGrylls · 16/06/2012 00:14

I know it is late. I will try and put you all out of your misery (although I am sure that is also an over-dramatic statement by me).

He had left the front door locked the door from the previous evening. Every morning he usually checks it before he leaves the house. This morning he managed to forget. He left the house he drove out the garage, and locked it on his way out. Our cleaning lady turned up and you know the next bit about how I called the gym and they said he was not there (this is where he always goes on a Friday morning). I have never been particularly practical (as you can guess), I looked through the front door and shouted a few times. Rung my next door neighbour's house - he emerged like a zombie from the dead, grunting - so unhelpful and even if he was I did not have a key to get in the back door. Called the police. Police pitch up (all 4 of them - by this stage I knew I had over-reacted) and say will your next door neighbour help us get in - when he sees police officer he is suddenly much more amenable and lets them in. They manage to climb over a high fence which neither me or my rather stocky yet lovely cleaning are able to manage (although my neighbour probably could have if he had tried).

My cleaning lady returns at this point and declares she has a key for the back door (this is news to me) and gives it to them (why she could not have said this in the first place I don't know?) and they climb over and so they get in. At which point DH calls and says "Ali I am so sorry, what has happened". I was surprised at how calm I was when I said "Where are you?"

Personally, I don't blame DH and would hate to have a go at him - he is always really reliable and at least 99% of the time it would be me that would have done this. I blame the bloody receptionist in the gym - it was her that got my worrying juices going. He said he had been there most of the time and had heard nothing.

:) glad all turned out well

Northernlurker · 16/06/2012 07:36

Ahhhhh I see. I don't think it was unreasonable to panic. The evidence suggested he was in the house. I would stop doing the key in door thing though - it's more trouble than it's worth.

Flimflammery · 16/06/2012 07:48

So he said he was in the gymn, the receptionist had said he wasn't...

He's having an affair.
Leave the bastard.

Dprince · 16/06/2012 07:52

How was he planning on getting back in? And I really want to know how you checked if he was shopping.

ripsishere · 16/06/2012 08:40

Maybe the OP lives in a village with a Spar rather than a huge Tesco?

PrettyPrinceofParties · 16/06/2012 09:06

Yes but no one can do all their whooping at a spar, it's just for emergencies, like the way you just get your bits from m&s, but have to supplement with a proper shop somewhere down the line.

Still a bit confused by this story tbh.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 16/06/2012 09:08

Shopping, you can do all your whooping where ever you like.
