AIBU to wonder why posters dump and run?

Hi

I have been lurking for a while and have actually been getting quite upset for posters when they are distressed over their situations.

Can someone please explain to me why it is reasonable to post a dilemma, ask for advice and then not respond to any posts?

We have all taken the time to think about situations and give cogent responses but sometimes there is only a brick wall.

I know that sometimes it's really difficult, but if you have managed to post asking for help, you could at least post an answer to the people that have bothered to take the time to respond.

Sorry for sounding snotty as a first poster; I am not really good at the talk thing and I probably don't get the whole website/posting business so end up very confused about the etiquette.

I don't even Facebook.

A 'wolef' arose from a typo for wolf (when discussing wolf fleeces) and then they formed a few IPOAT type threads about it so are now regarded as a 'quiche'. Grin

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:01

Mark I did not know that but I can see the word root. My daughter's fontanelle totally freaks me out but the word makes me think of a 1960s Motown girl group, hence my nickname. It's a beautiful word I think.

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:06

Quiche annoys me a little. In fact I think I get annoyed when people seem only to be able to uses set words/phrases instead of thinking for themselves. For example, it has to be bunfight, not, I don't know, scrapola. there are lots of mn words/phrases like this. God I'm miserable aren't I? AIBU!?

MarkGruffalo · 15/06/2012 00:12

Tis a fine nickname Kitty
Thanks moonlight Discussing wolf fleeces? really? Smile Like Jack Wolfskin or furs? i have yet to see a wolef thread or for that matter insane people on a thread - have only seen nobdies (Cos their threads do exactly what they say on the tin) If there are quiches around they need new marketing Wink

MarkGruffalo · 15/06/2012 00:15

Scrapola

Excellent. Will adopt this.

Think there should be a newbie glossary and not just the acronyms page along with the classics thread link in question e.g vagine quiche etc but i can't be arsed to do it and don't think site stuff would deem it necessary

MoonlightandRoses · 15/06/2012 00:20

kitty - you feel free to neologise all over the place - you never know, it might be the next 'quiche' / 'bunfight' / OFRS / (whatever it is one's meant to call eight legged beasties - sponges?) etc. Grin.

You know Lotto is going to come back in the morning and pull one of these Confused faces now, don't you?

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:27

Thanks youse twos! I just think when things are overused they lose their sheen and also their impact. I want a poster to make me laugh/think/add to my vocab rather than feel they're just cutting and pasting. I shall look out for scrapola! Moonlight, I fear you are right! Haha, lotto is getting more sleep than us. My 7 month old has decided to have a midnight mummy feast. Glad you girls (?) are up. I'm on my phone so can't do silly faces.

Latara · 15/06/2012 00:28

I think for some posters (well me anyway...) real life gets in the way - same as it does with catching up on facebook & making time to text / phone / email my RL friends. Although i haven't started any threads anyway... tempted but CBA'd (new abbreviation for you!).
(I do actually manage to catch up with friends & family regularly - i make a big effort to not be a rubbish friend!!)
I am very very tempted to ask an AIBU but got to be careful as it's work related (re: certain colleagues & their immaturity!).
Can't understand why a troll-type person would actually go to all the hassle of name-changing just to stir... bizarre.
But you can guarantee that any threads asking questions like 'AIBU to think that saying X (random racist & offensive word) is not racist...' are from shit stirrers.
Must stop swearing, sorry.

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:29

OFRS? Sponges? Are you talking spidds? Blurgh. I hate this time of year because of the tarantulas in my house.

Latara · 15/06/2012 00:31

neologise... ok is that a real word??!! I thought i was properly clever until i joined Mumsnet but have quickly realised that i am not as educated as or clever as i thought, oh dear :(

MoonlightandRoses · 15/06/2012 00:31

Real tarantulas? Shock

[Waxes back of hands, tries to speak in falsetto...Grin ]

MoonlightandRoses · 15/06/2012 00:34

Yup - means to create a new word (Greek 'neo' (new) + 'logos' (word)).

Mind you, there are any number of people on here who are not fond of same...

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:36

Latara- embrace the lifelong learning! Moonlight- well, big black house spiders. I spend May-December peering all over the house in anticipated horror. [Waxes back of hands, tries to speak in falsetto... ] are you a wolef??

MoonlightandRoses · 15/06/2012 00:44

Urgh - we've had far too many in with the recent weather! (And I initially mis-read "peering" in your second sentence as 'pee-ing' and wondered if 'marking territory' was a better defence than conkers Grin).

No, was a reference to the 'hairy-handed truckers' that show up on here occasionally. (I'm not though, honest!)

[Gets itchy looking around for beasties]

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:50

10-4 10-4 rubber ducky. Got that, was just teasing. I don't find conkers work. I did strew them liberally around our doors and had to take them up when an octo-ocular shyster made his home amongst them. Grrr. I've heard walnut leaves work.

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 00:51

Haven't explained OFRS or sponges yet though. Though if it related folklore which will keep me awake I don't want to know!,

Latara · 15/06/2012 00:56

Thanks.

Got no new words but loving the phrases used by my Northern lass colleague re: a colleague who caused me lots of trouble last Friday:

'X is so far up Y's arse that she can see daylight' (yes, a total creep basically); & 'you want to watch X, she's a snake in the grass!'
Fed up with work issues, but could not resist laughing!

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 01:00

Ah northern lasses. You've just got to love us! Right I'm away to bed before the next booby shift starts.

msrantsalot · 15/06/2012 01:03

I so want to change my name to ploppypants

PrincessFiorimonde · 15/06/2012 01:03

Hello to the newbies and near-newbies.

Re: Lotto's question - sometimes, I think, it happens when a thread takes off very rapidly, so when the OP comes back and sees 500 replies in half an hour she gets a bit daunted and hides gives up on the thread. (Especially if 499 of those posts disagree with the OP.)

Or sometimes the OP has really just posted to get something off her chest, so she isn't actually that bothered about the replies (whether or not they disagree with her).

And sometimes (if it's a sensitive subject), the OP gives up on the thread either because it becomes too distressing, or because she's read enough supportive replies and she needs to concentrate on RL instead.

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 01:06

Msrantsalot, well you can't, its my sock puppet name. Oh go on then. I'll be stifflittlechoccyfingers

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 15/06/2012 01:07

Welcome Kitty, Moonlight and Latara Smile

Every MNer should have an OFRS (and many do). It stands for 'Oh Fuck Rucksack' and contains everything you might need when the zombies attack...

except for a labrador to clean up the mess afterwards, because it won't fit. You'll want one though.

kittyandthefontanelles · 15/06/2012 01:12

Oh wow! I'm packing mine tomorrow! I've seen Shaun of the dead, I know all about it. Thanks, empress. Sponges? No, I must sleep

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 15/06/2012 01:22

Sorry Kitty, don't know sponges! If you find out then let me know.

Do you know the MN shopping list
essentials - Pombears, naice ham and cutted up pears?

Empusa · 15/06/2012 01:29

Sponges I think is actually loofahs? I believe it was because people were creeped out even seeing the word s**r, though I'm not 100% certain as I run screaming from any thread mentioning the evil beasts
