to think that 'blasting' a whistle, down the phone, into the ear of someone in a call centre is abusive?

An old school friend has delightedly put this as her status. That her husband had the whistle ready and BLAST = call centre caller with tinitus, lol ??
How is that funny!?
My DH had someone scream into his ear, as a teenager, and has tinitus to this day. That's over 20yrs later!
I wrote a reply giving this story but omitting that it was my DH and was told to , calm down. She has been putting up with the abuse of the constant call for months etc. And that she had suffered it herself, after a rock concert.
hmm not quite the same, I think, as having a high pitch put straight into your ear that could abuse Long Term damage.
But it would seem I am a kill joy Hmm
DH says leave it, but I can't help feeling very angry on his behalf. Not to mention the poor soul, though I don't deny the calls are annoying, no one deserves abuse like that when it could cause lasting problems.

No...It's all cock shots now - Dick pics this, cock shots that...

Makes me slightly nostalgic for the heavy breathers really

I can't think anyone would actually choose cold calling as a career given any reasonable alternative. You'd need the hide of a rhino.
Tps has sorted the landline out. I've never had a Microsoft scam call but I'm prepared if they ever do call!
For mobile calls, I instantly hang up and block. Job done. I blocked about 30 separate numbers from 3 to get rid of them.

Blowing a whistle is really shitty behaviour, although tbh to a certain extent I think scammers (not regular sales callers) deserve whatever they get.

I totally agree pamish. Although they can be annoying, I have nothing against call centre workers who as fluffyglitterbum (love the name!) said, are only trying to earn a living, and they should never be confused with scammers and thieves who are not out to try to make a sale but only to drain your bank accounts. These people have no morals and will try every trick in the book to achieve their goal.

Anyone who thinks TPS will stop calls us in cloud cuckoo land.Am on it and for mobiles and get calls all the time. Had one to a seminar about my pension the get a better return from a nice sounding woman. Told her I was registered with TPS and she said was calling from abroad and it didnt apply but still had spoofed a local number which was why I answered.
Whistle is too good for scammers

I think your friends husband sounds like a nasty cunt.

worridmum · 31/01/2017 15:08

It is abuse and she should go to jail you can be made permently deaf from that. Its not part of the job anymore so then working in retial and expecting to get punched in the face

Or working in a school and getting stabbed its all wrong

mambono5 · 31/01/2017 17:05

No, it's not the same at all. Retail staff don't turn up repeatedly at your house at ridiculous hours and wake up everybody by ringing the bell despite you putting a huge sign on the door telling them to not ring the bloody bell. Retail staff don't swear at you when you ask for the name of the company they work for and to stop bothering you.

The whistle advice is often given on various forum advising how to top unwanted calls and people harassing you.

SkylerScotly · 02/11/2023 00:08

It's funny how people always empathize with the scammer. You probably support kiddy porn makers and hitmen too. They're just feeding their family, the poor schmucks.

At least drug dealers are doing a service, providing goods to people who actually want them, but it's so rare when you see someone say, "That cop who arrested the drug dealer was an asshole, the drug dealer was just feeding his family." You are exactly what's wrong with society. If I were you, I'd be very careful when answering the phone. Karma is a bitch.

We had horrid nuisance calls when I was a kid. They were swearing threatening nasty. My dad whistled down the phone.
Justified, they were arseholes.
Call centre operators are just doing a job, one aspect they dislike IME is cold calling.
YANBU - she is being cruel to someone doing a thankless task.

Similar, I had a brat ringing up constantly screaming down the phone when I was a teenager. I finally resorted to the whistle blast. Cue kid shrieking she was going to tell her mother. No idea if she did, because she never rang again.

But call centre operators? Hell no. (Now if it was a scammer ... but I don't answer unknown numbers these days.)

junbean · 02/11/2023 02:49

It's not like call center employees want to do what they do. It's usually a sucky job (done it myself) and also very difficult usually with ridiculous pressure. They make calls because they have to in order to live. It's heartbreaking to think someone would injure someone in a more vulnerable position in life. I have tinnitus from Covid and it makes me suicidal sometimes. It's not comparable to the day after a concert, at all. It's maddening. YANBU
