to still eat my lunch tomorrow after the cat has had a go at it?

Tomorrow's lunch will consist of this evening's left overs, which I tipped in to a tupperware box. As it was still warm I left it on the kitchen bench with the lid off with the intention of putting it in the fridge once it had cooled.

The cats had been suspiciously quiet when I heard the tell-tale 'thud' on the kitchen floor. Sure enough, one of them had dragged several pieces of beef out of the box on to the kitchen bench. Angry

Short of getting a very yummy and extremely calorific sarnie from M&S tomorrow I have nowt else for lunch. So would IBU to just wipe the top layer of beef on my jumper and eat it anyway?

i wouldn't even bother to wipe it tbh! Blush

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 21:19

Do what you like, but you wouldnt catch me anywhere near it :o

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 21:20

Oh and if you are going to eat it, atleast wipe it on your shirt! Jumpers are too fluffy, you'll look like you are eating the cat not the meat the cat left behind!

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 21:22

This has reminded me of a Xmas when we were kids. Mum bought a turkey from somewhere different to our normal supermarket, got it out to defrost the day before and when she came back there were scratch marks on it and the cat was legging it out of the back door.

She never said a word until about 20 years later! It didnt bother me too much as the cat hadnt bitten it (was still frozen) and she washed it really really well. My sister however has never quite forgiven her :o

CakeBump · 13/06/2012 21:23

Go for it :)

I once came in from a phone call to find the dog standing next to my dinner of pasta and sauce with creme fraiche all round his mouth. In the absence of anything else in the house to eat, I mixed it round and carried on Blush

I'm still here though!

Bumdrop · 13/06/2012 21:26

As your cat been wormed recently ?? :)

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/06/2012 21:28

If it was a case of him just swiping the meat I wouldn't be too concerned, but he tends to lick & lick & lick his food before chomping it.

i defrosted a piece of steak on the side and when i went into the kitchen the packaging had been torn and there were cat chew marks all over. I just washed it under cold water and cooked it.

I grew up with dogs with no boundaries and they were (and the new ones at my parents are still the same) allowed to lick all plates clean, have sips out of cups of tea while we were drinking them etc.

My parents still tell me off and say i'm a 'nasty bitch' if i don't leave some of every meal for the dogs. Hmm Confused Shock

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/06/2012 21:30

Bumdrop (very apt name) no they're due a kitty MOT very soon!

Our family has a story about our spaniel having a gnaw at the frozen turkey thawing in a bowl set on the downstairs loo floor (no, I don't know why either) and Mum serving it up for Christmas lunch anyway. She hid the teeth marks with bacon... and didn't tell my brother Grin.

In our defence we were living on the breadline benefits at the time and throwing a whole turkey away just wasn't an option.

We all lived. Wouldn't recommend it though!

MoonlightandRoses · 13/06/2012 21:33

Go for the M&S option - unless, of course, you enjoy eating poo remnants...

Squeegle · 13/06/2012 21:34

Don't even think about it!

When I was younger I made myself some bread and butter with marmite. I left the room (containing cat). On my return I thought to myself- there's hardly any marmite there, just thought oh well I must just not have put much on.

That night I was sicker than I had ever been. Somewhere it entered my consciousness- the reason that there was so little marmite was because the cat had licked it off. Yuk and double yuk.

I would never ever risk it. Think about where a cats mouth has been.

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 13/06/2012 21:35

I'm still drinking this glass of water...

JollyBear · 13/06/2012 21:35

Depends on whether you'll be reheating it.
I caught our old cat eating from a pan cooking on the stove (on a v low heat). It was dh's tea so I just gave it a stir and boiled it for a bit. I presume boiling kills any germs. He ate it, no harm done!

irishchic · 13/06/2012 21:43

Disgusting. How could you even consider eating it now?

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/06/2012 21:46

It'll have a zap in the microwave.

I like to think that DH & I have cast iron stomachs and we have built up our immune system enough that the 5 second rule is extended dependant on how yummy the item dropped on the floor is.

I think this may be pushing my limits though. I wont enjoy it now and will be thinking about cat poo remnants with every mouthful.

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 21:48

Bin it. Go with M&S. Atleast that way, if a cat has been at it, it wont just be a cat, it will be an............M&S cat.

MangoHedgehog · 13/06/2012 21:51

cats lick their arseholes

enough said!

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/06/2012 21:53

Right! It's gone in the bin.
Damn cats wasting me money and making me put on weight!

We do have a friend who lets their dog lap a little bit from his beer glass, then thinks nothing of finishing the drink himself - though we do make faces at him when he does it.... Am not sure beer is great for dogs, either!

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/06/2012 21:54

:) @ M&S cat

Catsmamma · 13/06/2012 21:55

I am sure i share my bedside glass of water with the cat! And I am a huge believer in The Five Second Rule.

Oddly I'd probably eat the dinner in question if the cat had been at it, but since it was ALSO on the floor, I feel that's a risk too far.

Oh I would have totally eaten it Blush

When I was a kid I used to put the cats' paws in my mouth and I'm still here, cast iron stomach in tow.

It does annoy me when the cats do this though, especially when they take entire legs of chicken out of the casserole dish and eat them...
