to really dislike the way that people go "hiyaaaaaaaa, how are yooooou?"

It seems to be a particularly British thing whereby people try to denote "niceness".

My neighbour has had 2 visitors today (popular) and each time all parties have gone "hiyyaaaaaa, how are yoooooou, aaaaaw, you look loooooooooovely."

It just starts to grate after a bit.

I am 100% aware of the fact that I do exactly the same thing.

See, gin, if you say Good Afternoon, etc to me, I will respond appropriately with Very well, etc. I hope you'd show me the same courtesy when I go HELLO sweetheart, it's GOOD to see you! (Hint: you're supposed to say it's good to see me too, with a convincing display of warmth.)

They're just rituals, innit. Could be worse: dogs sniff each other's bums.

ginslinger · 13/06/2012 19:30

I'd be delighted to garlicbum .

Mindyourownbusiness · 13/06/2012 19:32

I hate when women do this in the pub and and just scream and run at each other open-armed and squealing 'Hiyaaaaaaaa , I've not seen you for ages.' I usually comment to those around me - 'Theyve probably not seen each other since lunchtime'

I can't do "convincing displays of warmth" though garlic. Just not made that way. Am warm, but not demonstrative :)

Jolly decent of you, gin.

Inneed, you've conjured up an entertaining picture of Mrsjay's neighbour greeting you with a creepy HIYAAAAAAA and you enthusing back: "Lush! I've not had a dump for a week! What's the gossip?"

Grin
garlicbum · 13/06/2012 22:33

Oh well, Step, just do your best, eh :)

Lush gained national popularity from Gavin and Stacey I think.

It's an odd thing, it seems to be very particular to the UK.

Not sure why some are suggesting that we'd rather, I don't know, shake hands or tip a hat. It's just so fake cos so many people go way over the top.

YANBU. I seem to hear this All. The. Time. It's SO fake. And I think it sends a very controlling message: only arms-length breezy superficiality will be tolerated.

starmaker7 · 14/06/2012 15:37

my son types like that on facebook ,it makes my eyes bleed so I have hidden him from my news feed !

precariouslybalanced · 14/06/2012 15:56

Grrrrrr. Cannot stand:

Hiya, y'alriiiight? (is "alright" all I should aspire to? is that the level to which you care and no further? And actually, 99% of the time, the person asking doesn't care about my wellbeing even that much)

Babe (always hear it followed by "in arms", so totally inappropriate and inaccurate)

Hon (Atilla, the -. Also, nearly always uttered by someone who wouldn't dare calling me 'honey')

Take care (Ah, thanks for the reminder, I shall now)

Get my goat every time.

Rant over.

Mindyourownbusiness · 14/06/2012 16:11
