to really dislike the way that people go "hiyaaaaaaaa, how are yooooou?"

It seems to be a particularly British thing whereby people try to denote "niceness".

My neighbour has had 2 visitors today (popular) and each time all parties have gone "hiyyaaaaaa, how are yoooooou, aaaaaw, you look loooooooooovely."

It just starts to grate after a bit.

I am 100% aware of the fact that I do exactly the same thing.

GiserableMitt · 13/06/2012 16:33

exception unless it's my best friend because we do ask each other, we do care and we do tell the other if we're not so good.

Yes I am one of those ''Hiyaaaaa how are yoooou?'' types, but only with my mates, for the under 30's it's 'Hey, how are you?'. The rest get a stiff upper lip 'Hello' or 'Morning' and if addressing the over 60's it's 'Hello, are you well?' might not want to use that on a hypochondriac though.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 13/06/2012 16:46

Feck off, poo-breath

That better?

ViviPru · 13/06/2012 16:58

I do an involuntary 'HiyaaaaaY'alriiiight?' Which I HATE. I'm full of self loathing today.

ImperialBlether · 13/06/2012 17:02

I hate it on here when people type "I'm sooooooooooooo (whatever)." Gets on my nerves.

YANBU. I can't stand gushing people! Much prefer it if someone's a little bit backward in coming forward - they're usually more genuine :)

wildfig · 13/06/2012 17:36

I need to break my own annoying habit of going, "[normal voice] ... lovely to chat, I'll see you soon [high-pitched idiot voice] Byyyy-eeee!" at the end of every phone call. Blush

We're not talking about genuine and sincere 'Hi! Oh, how are youu?' type greetings. We're talking about greetings where the voice is over-loud and over-excited, the eyes are under-whelmed, and the smile is fake.

Psammead · 13/06/2012 17:43

Oh God, wildpig you just described me. It's like I a reading from an infernal internal script.

slartybartfast · 13/06/2012 18:02

mumtoone123 · 13/06/2012 18:17

I like a warm greeting myself. Couldn't give a shit if it's genuine or not, much better than a miserable hello. Anyway byyyyeeeeeee!

If started saying 'mind how you go now...'

it's the beginning of the end.

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 13/06/2012 18:31

My favourite insincere greeter is the lady who goes "oh HELLO Luuuuv!! How ARE you, I haven't seen you for aaaaaages!!" and makes me want to reply "that's because we make a conscious effort to avoid each other".

TwllBach · 13/06/2012 18:43

I do it, and I do the BYY-EEE! Thing too, but these are mostly at work and on the phone at work, where I have also developed the disgusting habit of using "oooookeydokey!!" in practically every sentence.

I make myself want to vomit.

SaltResistantSlug · 13/06/2012 18:50

Someone told me to "take it easy" when I parted their company the other day - something that conjures up an image of reclining - cocktail in hand - on a sun lounger by a pool. And something I won't be doing any time soon, given that I'm responsible for a baby and a toddler.

Is lush a welsh thing? Originally?

I lived in Wales in the mid 90s and everyone said lush. Left in 96 never heard it again until about a year ago and now everyone is saying it.

ginslinger · 13/06/2012 19:21

Good afternoon, how are you?
Very well, thank you. And you?
Very well, thank you.

That is quite sufficient. Unless it's the morning or the evening naturally.
