Ah....they're seriously fashionable at the moment...all the best women have to have that 'just scratched' look.

Seriously - I've had them over half term (lovingly donated by dd1 to dd2 and myself) I since know that you can use the nitty gritty comb on dry hair and it works. Don't do the first comb through on dry though or you'll be surrounded by legged friends!!! I've got quite used to watching telly whilst combing my not so golden hair.

changethatbulb. You can use the nitty gritty comb but you need to brush the recipient's hair well first.....I have mid back length hair as do my dds and we all manage it.

I think I've still got them :( treated with full marks solution on monday and still not managed to lose the greasy look!)

I can get the kids nit free - all four had them at the start of half term, pretty sure all four are free now. The trouble is I can't comb myself thoroughly enough and DH is useless!

We use conditioner and the nitty gritty comb. It works very well on long hair - dd2 and dd3 have hair down to their waists. Their's is straight though and not too thick.

The chemist said that Full Marks doesn't work and suggested Hedrin instead.

Although had it on overnight but I'm still itching.

Smother your hair in the cheapest conditioner - wrap it loosely in cling film is even better but not absolutely necessary. Wait 30-40 mins. Rinse and comb the suffocated lice away

We used the Nitty Gritty and Tea tree shampoo and conditioner when we had our first infestation recently. The tea tree products did seem to make a different to how quickly we got shot of the little buggers.

My hair is shoulder length and very wavy - DH refused to do it for fear of leaving me bald so I had to sit in the bath combing for about 3/4 hour a night for a week - I was not amused!

Here's my recipe for getting rid of nits:

  1. Hedrin and thorough combing through.
  2. Remove Hedrin - if you have used the really greasy one which is best, recommend pouring super cheap nasty shampoo direct onto dry hair until sodden, then rinse out, then shampoo wet hair against with same shampoo - this pretty much deals with the greasiness.
  3. Next day, soak hair in vinegar - ordinary white vinegar is fine. It has to be drenched. Leave for 10 minutes, then wash out. This dissolves the glue that binds the eggs to the hair so that you can wash them away.
  4. Repeat Hedrin 7 days later as ordered (but you are unlikely to find anything).

Thanks for all the advice everyone, hopefully can knock the problem on the head now as have been fighting the urge to scratch all day at work. Will leave the flea treatment to last though, having to ask the vet if the dog could get them was bad enough!!

nothingoldcanstay · 13/06/2012 23:54

It's bollocks that they can't survive off the head for long as well.

We were up late and I used the nitty comb to get rid of my sons nits. I used the nearest facecloth to wipe them off on but left it on the side meaning to put in the wash in the morning.

Totally forgot and next night at bath time the little suckers were still crawling round!! I was told lots of things about nits but i reckon they are the next cockroaches
