At the supermarket with 6mo ds. It was freezing outside so brought him in in his Carseat with blanket on.

I had his seat belted into one of those seat carriers on top of the trolly..

Walking around when this lady walks up to me, she pulls ds's blanket off and says "may I?" I say "sorry what?" taking the blanket. She then says "just a wee cuddle love" and starts to un buckle him. I reply "sorry it's too cold to get him out" and quickly walk away.

I was in shock! Would you ever do this? She was left standing there on her own as I hurried away and I felt very rude.

Was Ibu to not let this lady have a quick cuddle?

I'm sure it's totally harmless, but this would make me uncomfortable as well.

I would stroke a cheek or tickle a foot on a baby, but I wouldn't do what that lady did.

Seona1973 · 12/06/2012 21:28

she sounds like a loon!

bobbledunk · 12/06/2012 21:29

What a weirdo! yadnbuGrin

WorraLiberty · 12/06/2012 21:30

I wonder if she has mental health problems?

I'm all for sniggering at some of the precious Mums on here who throw a hissy if someone so much as strokes their baby's hand....but this woman's behaviour is not normal imo.

lilybeansmummy · 12/06/2012 21:30

omg that just bloody ridiculous! i wud of just said to her no bloody way i dont know you! i cant believe they are people out there that think its ok to just lift a strangers baby! weirdos! Hmm

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 12/06/2012 21:30

YANBU. That is seriously odd behaviour. Rude and wierd.

Ladylong · 12/06/2012 21:31

Your natural response to any situation with any child is to protect them & this instinct felt much stronger to me when my son was a baby. Better to be safe than sorry. You'd be feeling much worse if she'd handled him badly or put her finger in his mouth. Be reassured, his wellbeing must come before her feelings. Don't doubt yourself. xx

LeBonkeyMollocks · 12/06/2012 21:32

YANBU!!

It would have freaked me out!

A stroke on the head or something, fine, but you don't unstrap someone elses baby for a cuddle Shock

Sarcalogos · 12/06/2012 21:33

Yanbu that is really really inappropriate!

Noqontrol · 12/06/2012 21:34

Agree with worraliberty. Although I can understand why you felt freaked about it.

Tangointhenight · 12/06/2012 21:35

I can't believe she was going to lift him out, I'd have smacked her in the early days so intense was my protective instincts!

She probably meant no harm, maybe that what people did in the olden days :o

WorraLiberty · 12/06/2012 21:36

Tango I really don't think people did that in the olden days either

Not that I'm old enough to know Blush

amieis · 12/06/2012 21:36

ladylong that EXACT situation happened to me the other day... I was waiting in a queue and dd (4mo) was having a mad five minutes, screaming her head off, and some random crazy woman in front of me just goes and wedges a finger in her mouth! OP you are DEFINITLEY not being unreasonable!

PissyDust · 12/06/2012 21:36

Ahh your baby must be so amazingly handsome, she couldn't help herself.

She is obvioulsly odd though.

I have also been freaked out when the old lady next to us at a till spat on her fingers, leant into the seat and twiddled DD's hair "I love ringlets" Hmm

misslinnet · 12/06/2012 21:37

YANBU.

That's completely inappropriate behaviour, you just don't try and cuddle a strangers baby like that.

Noqontrol · 12/06/2012 21:37

No they didn't do that in the olden days tango of this I am sure. Very likely mental health problems though.

4boyzmum · 12/06/2012 21:37

definitely overstepped the mark there!! i wouldve certainly felt completely freaked out by that. no way would i ever think it was ok for a stranger to waltz up to my child, lift him out of his seat and hold him! this woman prob wasnt weird but she made herself look a loon!

BarredfromhavingStella · 12/06/2012 21:39

Wow how strange-clearly she had issues Hmm-YANBU

GrahamTribe · 12/06/2012 21:41

my oh my! I saw an adorable puppy today and even then I asked the owner if I could stroke him before bending down to give him a fuss. YANBU.

fishybits · 12/06/2012 21:41

Gentleman here stuck his finger in DD's mouth a month ago which I was a bit Hmm at but didn't say anything. He saw her again this week and did precisely the same thing again only this time........she's got very sharp little teeth Grin Don't think he'll be doing again in a hurry.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 12/06/2012 21:42

Weird weird weird and totally inappropriate...

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 12/06/2012 21:43

Brilliant fishy's DD!

Thankgodforcaffeine · 12/06/2012 21:47

Wow, some people really do have boundary issues!

Xmasbaby11 · 12/06/2012 21:50

YANBU. That is not on.

my2centsis · 12/06/2012 21:54

Glad I am NBU. I did feel very rude walking away tho. I wondered if I was being a little precious and couldn't help think of the lady on here that used to go change all their babies clothes if someone else had held her so the baby only smelt like the mother Hmm

DM said what would of been the harm in letting her have a cuddle?
