WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 09:49

I think universally hated is a bit of a overstatement!

Rindercella · 13/06/2012 09:50

I don't hate you Whatevertheweather Smile

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 09:52

I hope no one hates anyone because of what car they drive.

klaxon · 13/06/2012 09:53

Wouldn't be fair to shoot either of you, I'd only get PMs complaining I was being unfair.

Cockwomble I'm waiting for someone to come along and tell you it's the bloody cyclists that are the problem now. Grin

theodorakis · 13/06/2012 09:55

Labootin...I have a Hummer H2. It's bright red.

nummus · 13/06/2012 10:04

klaxon you are talking bollocks.

theodorakis · 13/06/2012 10:09

I don't get why on earth people in the UK are so utterly obsessed with what other people feed their children or cars they drive. Weird. The link to the anti 4x4 site was a hoot. I can't stand seeing stinking battered old puntos with three kids strapped in the back. Personally, if I lived in the UK where fuel is expensive and taxed to the skies, I just wouldn't have a car. But driving around in a battered, polluting old unsafe junkheap is exactly the reason why the anti 4x4 people look so very silly. Yes I am smug about this, I have read this whole thread and think it's a mixture of snobbery (look at me in my Punto, aren't I clever and green) combined with a weeny little bit of envy.
If you can afford a nice car, get one. If you can't, don't endanger everyone else in your rubbishy old heap that is 20 years old and was a fiat to start with anyway.

nummus · 13/06/2012 10:11

lol theodorakis

Rindercella · 13/06/2012 10:11

Oooh Klaxon, I think I know you. How very interesting Wink

Lizzylou · 13/06/2012 10:11

So if you don't have a 4x4 you must drive
a battered, polluting old unsafe junkheap

Erm, no!

nummus · 13/06/2012 10:11

actually they arent really, it is only on mumsnet that people are obsessed with food and cars etc etc

theodorakis · 13/06/2012 10:16

I personally dislike the mummy buses, big ugly smuggy things. We all have a choice how we spend our money, if it's a nice car you want, get one, if not don't.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 10:23

I've got a punto look at me I'm clever and green!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 10:25

Didn't even know it was green. I'll have to make a mental note of that to annoy people with.

I am of course playing devils advocate a bit (but i actually do have a red Hummer) but 4x4 drivers, along with rich people, conservatives, Arabs to name a few are fair game on MN for the most horrible and aggressive ridicule. Some of do have 4x4s but it is nobody elses business really. I don't get why you hate people so much for the car they drive or the paper they read.

The whole "I live in a rural area, therefore need a 4x4" justification does puzzle me. Erm...we do have tarmac in the country.

To be honest, the big modern 4x4s are incredibly unpractical in our tiny narrow Cornish lanes, as they are just too bloody wide, and the vast majority of their drivers seem unable/unwilling to reverse into tiny passing places (I think they're worried about scratching their immaculate paintwork).

I'm sure there are some places that justify the use of a 4x4, but everyone I know that lives up a windy unmade farm track can't afford to run one, and gets by with a clapped-out estate car.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 10:39

Everyone's got an opinion though otherwise what was the point of even starting this thread? Some people have come on and said they don't like the cars, dosent make them jealous spiteful haters?

If I'm honest we have a 4x4 so that I can fit 3 small children, or really their carseats in one line right behind me. I can fit all their stuff in the back. My OH wouldn't drive a people carrier, he hates them so it didn't leave us with a lot of choice.

We live in a rural area and I use that as an excuse as people seem to like bashing 4x4 owners and use whatever reason they can find.

Since getting one though, I love it. I feel a lot safer in it, its a volvo so it is safe. When some arsehole wants to tailgate me it doesn't bother me as much, they'll come off worse than me.

theodorakis · 13/06/2012 10:44

Yes but as in any debate on here, the guardian readers are superior to the mail readers, the crappo car drivers are better than the 4x4, the socialists are clever than the capitalists, the people with poorly paid jobs are better than the people who earn over a certain threshold, the people who send their children to state schools are obviously more beneficiant than the people who use private schools, the Bf are better than the FF, the natural birthers are far better mums than the CS mums (extra points for no help at all), the people who fly Ryanair are better than the people who fly Emirates business class....
it's all a bit 6th form sometimes.

bigjoeent · 13/06/2012 10:45

Not sure about the Ryanair one, but the rest spot on Grin
